UPDATED VIDEO SERIES! • So you want to study B...
Everything you need to know about doing a degree in biochemistry from someone who’s doing it….me!
Hey guys,
Bit of a long description box today but basically want to make it as easy as possible for you all to find what you want to get from this video (which I hope was helpful/interesting)
Naturally I know I’ve only done one year of the degree but hey if you don't like the sound of year one you probably won’t like any of it!
I tried to cram it all in to these sections:
STRUCTURE (labs lectures contact hours etc) 2:58
CONTENT (modules) 8:46
EXAMS/FREE TIME/“HOMEWORK” ETC 10:55
Modules: www.bath.ac.uk/catalogues/2018...
If I missed anything apologies but please feel free to ask me anything you want to know and hopefully I can answer from experience!
Love you loads and sorry for being too busy to upload for a while

My final year in my biochem degree.. Best advice i can give is MEMORIZE ALL THE STRUCTURES AND PATHWAYS IN THE BEGINNING.
Update : I'm a grad student now
Amen! Same applies for Biomed :D There's tons of overlap with Biochem/Biotech. Classes like Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Protein Chemistry, Genetic Engineering... Can't write down a full Krebs cycle myself anymore, but then again, haven't come across situations were I needed to. Perhaps the essence is more to remember how different macromolecules enter in different cycles, and how much ATP is generated. Ow, and then there's signal transduction pathways also, haha. Damn you, JAK/STAT :D
How long does it take
Do you have a resume of them to memorize? Or a book that you can recommend?
How many years did it take
For someone wanting to study biomed in the future what do you reccomend to research prior to application
I'm graduating in December with my bachelors in Biochemistry!
Update: I got a job as a lab supervisor at a University 2019 then in March 2020 when covid hit and they furloughed all the lab staff. I started freelance chemistry consulting with companies and now I am applying to be a Senior Quality Control specialist at a whiskey distillery.
Congrats!! I'm graduating in June!!
How is it and what kinda of job can you get?
which uni.... congrats though doing my masters in medical biochemistry
Same here!!! From ASU 😎
Is it easy getting a job.??? ANSWER ME LADY
Other than lab reports, biochemistry is, without a doubt, a very interesting field!! (2nd yr student here 🤙🏻)
Hey Man! I had some questions, mind guiding me?
My major is biochemistry and i hate it how do you find it interesting please tell me???
I guess you have to find topics you like because it’s a really big field so there’s a lot it covers and there must be some bits you like! Good books that use the application of biochemistry also make it more interesting
@@NooStenningVideos thanks for suggesting that i will surely try to find topics of my interest... ❤

I recently discovered this video while researching university topics to look into, I came across Biochemistry, and really wanted a rundown on what it was all about and this really helps a lot 😎
I am 25 years old, from America who's never been to a college or uni, but despite an interest in Biochem, I've been studying languages, and linguistics on my own for the last 5 years, but career wise, I have been looking into something that is challenging and involved in the sciences to help the general public.
Lastly, this video was very informative and I appreciate your enthusiasm, thank you from the US 🙌🏻
Thanks so much! This video really helped me. I had thought about doing a biochemistry degree, but wasn't sure, and this totally helped me know what it would be like! Now I'm actually excited to study biochemistry! Thanks so much!
I'm taking my GCSC's this year and wanted to know more about biochemistry . This video was really helpful . Thank you so much!!
Wow. This video was so helpful! I've been watching several videos trying to figure out what is biochemistry and what exactly a biochemistry student will come across in Uni and this was the most relevant and informative. Thank you so much. Also, the way you speak and body language helps alot. You're giving off so much postive energy, that I someway somehow feel motivated and excited to pursue Biochemistry. Thanks alot.
So glad I could help! Thank you :)
This is so helpful! I went to a university fair recently and people were suggesting for me to study Biochemistry because I was interested in science but I’m not studying entirely the right qualifications. Like you, I’ve always preferred theory to practical so I’m glad to know I’m not the only one! Thank you for doing this! :)
+Katherine Longland no problem at all! Let me know if you have any questions, I know it's a bit weird asking people in person on a stand at those fairs haha!
+Noo Stenning, thank you so much, I don’t think I have any questions so far but thank you again for the informative yet helpful video! :)
I’m a senior in high school planning to go into biochem so thanks for this video :))
Going to graduate this spring with a BS in biochem and a minor in chemistry . All I can say is keep an open mind on your final major, you’ll be exposed to a lot of different sciences and math. If something piques your interest, I suggest you take a class or two to explore it. The further along you go into biochemistry, the tighter your schedule becomes and you’ll get less opportunity to switch over to something you might like more. Feel free to shoot me any questions if you have any!
@@Laws2 Thanks :) I feel pretty sure about wanting to study biochem, I have my own molecule modeling kit that I mess around with for fun haha. But yeah I'll definitely keep my options open. In HS so far I've taken AP Physics 1 and am currently taking AP Bio, AP Chem and AP Calc AB so I've had some exposure to other sciences. Were there any sciences that you took that made you consider switching your major?
@@mzapcupcake4294 Thats a great science and math base to start off! A few classes that I personally loved:
Molecular Genetics- protein-protein interaction is the basis of biochemistry, and seeing that play out at a macro scale is really fun.
Physical Chemistry- This one is just my professor making it super fun to learn. If chemistry shows the why of molecule-molecule interaction, P-Chem shows the how.
Wine Appreciation: Yes it’s a real course. Honestly I spend so much time building up hard skills, my soft skills need a bit of a flex too
@@Laws2 that’s awesome, yeah I’ve heard great things about p chem. My aunt has a PhD in chem and she said that was one of her favorite courses too haha, thanks for all the insight :)
@@Laws2 Completely random.. And late.. My counselor recommended a bachelors in Biochemistry (Medicinal Science) To lead up to my PhD in Pharmacy. Is this valid?
Great to have a little nosey at other universities studying biochemistry! I’m in my first year too, and I’m finding biochemistry sorta’ hard, but very interesting. It’s similar to what happens at my uni; was worried I was doing crazy stuff! Thanks very muchhhh x
+LauraRusselsx aw I didn't even think of people watching from other unis so that's cool! Haha I'm glad it was helpful x
Noo Stenning defo helpful! I also find the lab stuff we do is on the boring side, but I’m hoping we’ll have more to do next year! You’ll have to let us know, see if my uni is stingy haha :)
Thanks a lot for this video. I'm starting my biochemical degree at the end of July, and this is the kind of information I was looking for :)
I just finished my first year in biochemistry, when you said labs i just had the same reaction 😂 and got reminded of the lab reports that i hate doing !!!
I studied biochemistry at Cardiff University (BSc 1987; PhD 1991). My bachelor's degree involved equal proportions of biochemistry, chemistry and microbiology in year one, half-and-half biochemistry and chemistry in year two, and biochemistry only (with an elective) in year three. In my experience, the days (other than Wednesday afternoons) were filled with lectures, tutorials and labs., with evenings reviewing the day's lecture notes and completing assignments. My advice would be to make thorough notes, memorize the metabolic pathways (and understand what they mean) and work consistently. Don't rely on 'cramming' and you should be fine!
Amazing to hear! And great advice, definitely still applicable today :)
Thank you for this! I'm struggling to decide between paramedics science or biochem/biomed and this video was really helpful.
Hope you managed to pick ok!
what did u pick
Wow your school has way more resources then any of the ones I’ve been to here in the US!
This video was so helpful! Although I'm only just doing my GCSEs I'd love to study biology or chemistry at university!💗💗
+Amy Brownlee that's so great that you already like subjects enough to do that! Good luck with your exams x
Thank you so much! X
What are you studying now?
thank you so much, this has been so helpful!
I'm doing 1st year of biotechnology in Poland and it's literally the same!
Doing matric this year I'm considering doing biochemistry in varsity. Thanks for the info
such a helpful video!!
First semester at University of GENEVA:

+olivia wilson I'm so glad! Potentially something makeup/beauty/fashion related haha! I guess I could link cosmetics to my degree, or if I'm going completely out of the box I'd love to present something!
Hey peeps, Tbh this is a truely awesome video with information i just got done majoring in biochemistry and just got a lab job making 108 a year. stick with it the pay and job is so fun keep studying :)
Nightbot 108k??? Straight out of college?
Jonah V that’s what i should be making after working there for a while
Nightbot what’s the pay an hour there currently? That’s amazing!
That sounds great but what kind of job is it???
This was so so helpful, I haven't seen any videos about biochemistry until this one! Im currently thinking of applying for either biochemistry and genetics or just a straight biochemistry. Like you, i really enjoy studying biology at the smallest/deepest level but also find genetics really interesting. Do you think there was enough genetics as part of your degree for someone who is really interested or do you think a biochemistry and genetics degree would be better?
+Rosie Harrison I hadn't either so I'm glad it was helpful! We had a genetics module and then elements of genetics throughout, then next year you can pick optional modules entered around genetics so there definitely is enough! Honestly I would pick the uni you want to go to because for instance they only do straight biochem here and you're cutting yourself off from some great unis by specialising early! I think there's enough x
Noo Stenning Thanks and yes that makes sense x
It depends on the school to be honest. But I took several courses that had genetics embedded into it as well as a sole alone genetics course.
@@biochemistrywithlinda thank you for the response. I'm actually a 2nd year biochemistry student now!! And turns out I like the cell biology bits the most!

+Nessy Samp I'm glad!x
This was so good! Will you be around on the Bath Open Days?
+Amber I'm glad! Potentially the one in September and then throughout next year most likely :)
Thanks Noo! That was really helpful
I relate so much to this - I'm just finishing first year in Biology and I love the theory content, but don't want to be a Scientist and so I hate labs!! They are the worst thing about my degree definitely 😬
Jane Smith same. I’m a medical science student and I love the content involved but I absolutely loathe pracs and labs. I literally get anxiety and find it so daunting to start a lab from scratch then write a report about it.....
@@kamalekermawi this is me first year biochem now. I loathe lab practice. I've got lots of physics and maths and I prefer that to laboratory practice. I always expected it to be the other way around. I really should have went to biotech or bioinformatics.
although I'm majoring in chemistry I'm pretty sure it'll be helpful especially in deciding which branch ill prefer so thanks!
My advice to any first year biochemistry students as final year biochemistry student: memorize all the structures, get ready for quantum chemistry, electrochemistry all forms of organic chemistry a little bit of microbiology like immunology and microbiology genetics and a lot of lab hours 😂, the proper biochemistry courses you’ll do like protein chemistry, carbohydrate chemistry, bio inorganic chemistry e.t.c are probably the easiest courses you’ll do.
I love this.
Heyy
Thank you ur video was sooo informative, just wondering, I am considering applying for a bio-chemistry degree but currently am not doing it for a-level, it's not that I don't enjoy, it's more so other subjects I enjoyed more and achieved higher academically wise, do you think it would be a struggle for me to take this degree, as in did most the content heavily rely on prior a-level biology knowledge
I'm thinking about doing chemistry at uni because I just really like it, I like the lab work especially, but I'm also drawn to biochem/genetics but Im not sure if it will be for me or just an interest... its really hard to decide!
+David that is tough! Do you know what you might want to go in to? Or what you would rather spend time listening to people talk about/write about yourself?
I'm pretty much the same except I'm now pretty sure that I don't want to study biochem since watching this video because there's too much biology 😂 I 100% prefer chemistry
@H H Yeah I think Biochem labs are mostly pipetting into tiny tubes, lots of them(!) but the theory is interesting. I hope to do Medicinal Chemistry (at Liverpool), I'm like you - cos I want to do mostly chemistry but I wanna understand how medicines/drugs work on cells as well :)
+H H hahaha yup you'll be better off not then, lots of biology!
@@davidsweeney111 Medicinal chemistry or pharmocology may be for you - you can do a few chemistry and medicinal chem degrees, with something like that you can change to another related course after your first year if you want
Am proud of you darling 💝💝💞💞
Thank you I always wonder how to became one! It's my dream! :D
interesting about this all in laboratories... I’ll keep you and continue this
I have been looking for this. Thanks so much for making this video 📹
+Rom rom labs no problem!
I'll be going to uni in a few months to study undergrad biochemistry. I read a few textbooks in my sophomore and junior year of high school to familiarize myself with stuff (Michaelis Menten, Edman Degradation) to sort of prepare for this, but i'm super anxious. Hopefully I remember to update this lmao.
I don't know how it is in Foreign Schools, but labs in the United states schools (at least from my observation) get progressively more awesome, assuming u love science stuffs xD. For example, my microbiology lab is all about culturing microbes understanding tests that can be done with them, and assists in understanding the lecture. The same goes for any chemistry class above gen chems... I heavily disliked the general chemistry labs, but so far the organic chemistry lab is quite interesting
Thanks for your video! It is really beneficial to people coming from other areas who want to start bioinformatics. Can you explain what you in labs? Why everybody hate them? I wish I could learn a little to understand what happens out of theory
I’m going to do a whole video on labs in the next few weeks :)
just firmed my biochem place at bath
I am a first year Biochemist at Uni of Nottingham and I have to say it sounds soo similar 😁
+James Kitching ah that's so good to know!
Noo Stenning hope the exams went well - still got a week left and everyone else from elsewhere is finished 💁♂️💁♂️.
+James Kitching thank you! Aw good luck x
i'm about to finish my first year!!
Thank youu for making thiss !! Ive put down general science specified towards biology. But like you, i know i wont enjoy labs that much. You said in the vid that you wouldnt like to work in a lab so what do u plan on going into? x
+_Aisha_ haha the third comment in a row asking! If you look a few comments down I answered :)
( I'm not much of a public commenter but here I go! ) You see I love theories and using ur head to figure things out ( even though I usually fail at stuff like that I enjoy them ) and like science and biodiversity in general. I didn't do much research in the field itself but after we did some random formulas in class i cried. It was so confusing and I didn't quite understand it tbh... I was wondering if the field itself is mostly based on confusing formulas and less hands on work like looking at a organism and specimens through a microscope. Is there specific types of biochemists that specialize in different things? This is a old video so I doubt you'll reply but if anybody in the comments could I would really appreciate that!
Hey, welcome to comments haha! I would say it’s definitely a mix, it’s hard to say for sure as all the areas are different and I’ve never worked full time in a lab! But biochemists definitely specialise in different things and there are different jobs which use different skills- if you’re interested in human biology on a small molecular scale, I would go for it :)
That's amazing😮 thank you 😂
I keep doubting what degree to do at university 😭 I want to do something biology/chemistry related but I don’t know which specific degree to do. My favourite A-Level is probably Chemistry, but I don’t know if that’s just because of the subject or because I really like the teachers, and vice versa, I don’t know how much I like biology or if it’s just the teachers that I sometimes find difficult (they are lovely but sometimes go very much off topic and it’s quite frustrating lol). I’ve been reading A is for Arsenic by Kathryn Harkup and I find this book really interesting (it talks about different poisons and the way they interact with the body and why they kill etc). I did the Chemistry Olympiad and found that really fun to do as well. My favourite topic in biology is biological molecules, talking about protein structure, polysaccharides, lipids etc, and I also enjoyed the DNA part and enzymes. But I also really enjoy chemistry, I can’t decide what degree to do. I want to do something that combines both and kind of has both equally but I don’t know :( if anyone watching has any tips that would be great!
Currently doing computer science and I might change to biochem. I have a much bigger interest in this and seems much more interesting.
I'm switching from CS to Biochem as well
Same but i feel like I know nothing about science, biology/ chemistry. Idk if i should risk it lol
I also want to study biology next year, thank you for this helpful video!:) Do you already know what you want to do after studying? (because you said you're not that interested in lab work, but most of scientific jobs are 90% in labs:p)
+-infinityus that's ok! Haha I just answered this question it's a popular one, should be a few comments below you!x

Ahh thank you for the video so much !!! I am thinking about choosing biochem at Bath :) it's so comforting you enjoy it so much. What are the things you did the summer before your application, how do you think I can prepare for studying biochem? What should and shouldn't I have on my PS?
+Karolina Kuna good choice!! I did some online courses in areas of biochem, read a book or 2 and basically just worked on the wording of my PS! I have a whole PS video if you check that out :) but basically show yourself off, but don't put irrelevant things from when you were younger than about 15, and back up everything you do eg dance with why that helps you be a good applicant 😘
Oh ok, thank you
+Karolina Kuna feel free to DM me on social media and ask any questions you have :)

@Alvin Carter why?
If you think they're hard in Uni, wait till you work in a biotech or pharma company ;)
I'm on my senior hs and turning college next year, still confuse if i'm going to take bs chem engineer or biochemistry, both interesting fields.
I'm planning to do a chemistry degree in September so this is the next best thing I guess haha
+Aaron-Jerome Agyei aw yes there are similarities! The chemistry friends I have do more labs than I do, and have harder maths to do but the general structure is similar x
Thank you so much for this video !! IK applying to college (in the us) and I’m torn between biochem or biomed/biomes engineering but can’t decide ? Could you offer any insight on all three ?? That’d b great, thanks !!
Biochem is the detailed basis of living processes, biomed has a body/drug focus and to my knowledge boomed engineering would be things like prosthetic limbs but would have a good chunk of biomed in it x
Ik your comment is a year old but I’m basically in the same shoes you were in back then. If you happen to see this, what major did you end up choosing and why?
Hey this is very helpful
Am in my third year biochem degree any advice on how to come up with my final year project research 🙏
Wanted to go into biochemistry. To go to college in it. I'm planning on going after a P.H.D Do you hafta pick a specific specialty? What options do they give you for specialization? I'm planning to do it online. Do you know of anything about online college? Do you have any advice on what parts of biochemistry require the most attention? Do you recommend biochemistry? Do you regret it?Are the lessons dependant on specialization? How soon must you specialize ?
This video was just what I needed! I am studying biology and chemistry at A level and I think it's so difficult to decide on a degree... biology, chemistry, biochem, biomed I feel like it's a never ending list of similar sounding courses! But this really helped me to understand clearly what biochemistry is about. Thank you for that!
+Emily Walker so true! If you need any help explaining the options I have close friends doing all of the above so I can tell you the detailed differences x
If it's not too much trouble that would help me out so much x
+Emily Walker sure, any in particular? Obviously chemistry is very different to all those others but the other 3 are similar x
Yeah I understand. So can you explain the differences between biochem and biomed please? x
+Emily Walker sure! So they have crossover for example the biochem module and the cell and molecular biology module I did. But my friends did a different genetics module to us and a physiology module. Essentially you learn more about the body because it's more specialised medical/drug related biochem! The labs for us were exactly the same in first year x
Really great video, I'm planning on studying biochemistry but coming from an access course rather than A levels. I'm worried that I might not have the knowledge that others may have for the degree, can you recommend topics I should know before hand? For example studying specific chemical mechanisms or maths concepts?
+Hermitted hey, as I don't know exactly what you know it would be very difficult for me to say haha! But if you email whatever university you plan to go to they would definitely help you! If you can get access online to an a level chemistry and biology specification (just google it!) you'll see what's expected of you before you arrive x
Hey lovely. Thank you for this. I recently got accepted into applied molecular bio and biochem at my dream school. What should i carry with me in my bag for labs/lectures? Thank youuuu
How is life after graduating as a biochem student? What do you work as currently? Also do you need to take masters for biochem?

+Naïma Soussi hey, I think I answered a super similar question on this video already but in case I'm getting mixed up, basically biochem is very broad so anything from drug research-conservation, lots of medical related careers and general research into plants and the body! Hi, this was such a helpful video! In your video you said that you enjoy the science but don't want to end up in a lab, that is exactly me as well. I was worried that doing a biochem/biomedical degree only opens up lab career opportunities so I wanted to ask what other jobs you could go into that are not specifically lab related with a biochem/biomed degree?
+Amelie Heimann I'm really glad! Basically those sorts of degrees are some of the best for transferable skills, you still have to write whilst gaining all the technical skills and using key parts of your brain haha! So in theory you could go into nearly any job. You could work in the front of business areas so marketing/business etc for anything biochem related so pharmaceutical company, cosmetics, food and beverage etc! I'm sure if you googled around you would find things x
Thank you!

The only problem I have is the Math aspect of Biochemistry. Im doing A-level Math now and I don't really want to continue with that. Do you recommend the molecular Biology or Biochemistry?
How much harder does the Math aspect get( than A-level and Calculus? ) you previously learned in high school ?
Yeah same! Chemistry is awesome but I'm not sure if I'm in love with the math aspect of it. I've heard that the maths gets a lot easier when you start working, but in Uni it gets fairly extensive and difficult !! Not sure how to approach this
Hello, I’m wondering if you have any information to share with me from your module in characterising proteins!! I’d be so grateful! I’m currently trying to frantically collate information from google 🤯🙈 good luck with your degree! x

So which country pays good to biochemistry grads and which might be not too expensive.
There's a rare chance I might get a response because I'm watching this video a year later 😂. But I had some questions.
Basically it's summer for me and I gotta decide the course I wanna do most so I can write up my personal statement and apply when I get back to college. Im stuck and I don't have a clue what to do.
I was wanting to do optometry but my Predicted Grades say otherwise and with University of Manchester I can get into Biochemistry. So like is it worth going into? I've read some forums (they're from 7 yrs ago which I'm skeptical about) but like some people said that a biochemistry won't be able to get you a job and all that stuff like it maybe hard to get a job. Like I was interested in biochemistry just not looked at it that much.
Basically , is it worth going into? Do universities help in getting a job with research or whatever?
+Master Chief hi, you will get a reply haha! Biochemistry is very well renowned for being broad enough that you can get quite a few jobs from it- especially from a good uni like Manchester! They absolutely help you getting a job, for example at Bath they also recommend you do a placement year which gives you work experience and potentially the opportunity for a job there when you graduate. Obviously optometry has a clear job path unlike biochem but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of jobs especially in research. If you love small scale molecular biology etc you’ll enjoy your degree and I’m sure find a job you want to do :)
@@NooStenningVideos omg thank you so much for the reply 😂 it clears everything up. Now I got my final year of college time to work hard and do biochemistry! And again thanks for the reply it helps clear everything up!

I cant get related to this as my U at first year only give us the theory stuff, math phys and chem at 1st sem, and second semester again, math II, phys II chem II, by 2nd year you attend to advanced chem, particles phys etc... Only in 2nd sem of the second year you start with public health and things that really makes the career
can I persue biochemistry if I only have biology and chemistry in 10+2 but not physics??
I don’t know if I want to study biochemistry or chemistry, I much prefer chemistry but I don’t mind biology and so I’m open to studying either. The only factors affecting my issue with deciding is the careers available to me with each, like is there more options if I study one of them? Would I benefit more from studying one than the other?
This is kind of my dilemma as well 😢what did you end up doing?
Is there any use after completing the biochemistry course in local colleges
I remember being in university and having professors literally tell the class that they can’t take pictures of the notes and would refuse laptops because they were worried kids would post them.
some still do if the research isn’t published yet!
As for someone who is an introvert but loves science (and math), would Biochemistry be a good course to take in college?
I don't think it matters if you're an introvert or extrovert! Everyone experiences courses so differently anyway :)
Do you recommend Biochemistry for a degree choice? 😊
I had completed my MSc biochemistry 😍I luv my subject coz v interesting.. The people who dng biochemistry all the best of u all .....but sometimes those structures will run in my mind while sleeping... Lol
What kinda of things do you do at your job??
Hay hi..

At last..: I'm still in...
Is it worth doing if you are getting the best university in India
I’m 25 and I want to start studying biochemistry, do you think its too late for me? I always loved biology, chemistry and loooooved when we had lab in highschool. The reason I didn’t start this career sooner was because I followed some friends “advice” and I got to Chemical Engineer....yeah, it was an Engineer with a liiiiiiiiiiiitle teeny tiny bit of chemistry. So I dropped out. I don’t regret it because I became a professional musician, but this wish keeps haunting me.. I would love to work on stimulants and psychodelics for therapy, I think it is becoming a blooming field.
Edit: Chemical Engineer
Wow such an interesting career path! i definitely don’t think it’s too late AT ALL! We have a few mature students on our course who are certainly older than you- and 3/4 years isn’t even that long as long as you can finance it ok 👍 good luck! (And you’re right about that new field haha)
It's never too late for you to chase your dreams
Which degree are you doing?, and is your degree a specific one?, cause i want to specialize in a degree but not sure which one, (If there are many). As i want to peruse my career in a hospital/Medical Faculty. Please advise me.
Hi, I'm really interested in studying biochemistry, I love chemsitry and biology but I am bad at maths, I can manage the maths within the subjects but maths itself isnt a strong point of mine, I was just wondering how much maths there is in biochemistry?
Not too much to be honest, and also you can definitely work on it- there were classes for example for people who didn’t do a level maths! X
