That's not even the main issue here. Ukraine simply doesn't have that many prisoners they could send to the frontline to make a difference. Only about 200 thousand people are currently held in the Ukrainian penitentiary system. That's over three times less than there are inmates in Russia.

@@Daniel-vw7mwIn fact, Russian prisoners that got pardoned and freed after they fought for the country have a very good track record compared to regular convicts after they are freed.
Regular convicts imprisoned for serious crimes are known to often commit another heavy crime during the first month after they are freed. That statistics is horrible, something like 30% of them.
Contrary to that, convicts who fought in the Wagner ranks, had something around 1%, very contrasting. The chance to redeem themselves and come out as war heroes with fame, money and respect of the patriotic society did a decent job.
The russian prisoners are given a choice to volunteer for a hope to be free/pardoned. But with ukraine, they are forcing the prisoners. Also, the russian prisoners are put in their own separate penal units.

Fun fact is that many refused to serv in military and ended up in prison only to be forcefully sent on the frontline anyways.

Doesnt even matter. There isnt even a 100k prisoners in Ukraine. Before the war they had 49k. They lost some to occupation and most of them were in separatist controlled Donbas anyway.

This could cost them a lot of money, I think this is more propaganda than reason because it's not easy to give weapons to captured Russians in their hands and do it on the line of contact. I don't understand how this would be done in reality.
