  • Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy takes heavy inspiration from popular games at the time but mixes in more than enough of its own ideas to make something as special as it is. The game also needs a follow-up… pretty badly. Let's take a look at why.

Fantastic game. I still have the disk, and it's probably in my top 5 original Xbox games.
A newer game, "Control," just went on sale for 70% off on Steam, and I'm downloading it as I type this.
My hopes is that Control will feel like an updated version of Psi-Ops. If Control is even half as good, I'm gonna be thrilled!
I really love unconventional games that challenge the status quo of big name titles.
It's why I loved games like LoZ: Wind Waker, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Luigi's Mansion, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Pikmin, Limbo, Portal, Spore, Black & White 2, Pilot Wings, etc.
I know Splinter Cell may seem like an odd one to be on that short list, but it really was unusual at the time. While shooting out lights was nothing new (Perfect Dark on the N64 did that amazingly, even had a "perfect darkness" mode/cheat that killed all dynamic lights and gave you NVGs), the stealth mechanics were very impressive, far more so than hiding under/in a box. KCD, of course, has the most unique melee combat system I've seen in a game outside of VR, and really emphasized the importance of having your character train/spar, and improve his technique.
I wish publishers were willing to take risks for innovative games more often.
Thankfully, we have Steam on PC, which has green-lit thousands of indi developer games.
Steam is the reason console gaming is dead to me, because we get so many cool games on PC that consoles just don't want to go to the trouble of funding/hosting. Granted, there are a lot of clones, and games that aren't particularly innovative, but some have a really unique take on a genre, or just execute and support it better than all the others.

The concept was good and I’ve seen a couple of games try to mimic some of its traits like CONTROL (dated graphics, long load screens, and lack of manual saves or check points), but a better execution was Mass Effect’s attempts utilizing Biotic/ Adept build to manipulate the battle alongside gunplay seamlessly.

I was really enjoying this game for the first half, and then maybe about 3/4 of the way it starts to get a little too silly and the level-design and quality of the levels just takes a dive. At first I would say it's at least an 8/10, but the end of the game really leaves a sour taste in my mouth with how rushed it all feels, so I'd probably say the game is like a 5.5 or 6/10.

I'd love for this as well, if it wasn't for the lawsuit surrounding the game that led to Midway's demise.
If you can get around that suit, the sky's the limit.

I doesn't make any sense to why a new military psy powers game hasn't been made let alone another Psi Ops game.
Could you imagine how fun a free roam ghost recon game would be with the option of using Psy powers!?
Personally even if I had to limit myself to one psy power per character I'd pick mind control as my main. Jumping into the body of a gate guard and wandering into a base, hoping between higher ranked personnel to get the appropriate clearance. Then once I've got what I need just start causing chaos and mistrust inside the compound until they all just shooting at each other.
I'd never get sick of that approach lol

I know im not the only one who played thru this game a million times, AS THE HOT REDHEAD, in just the fishnet suit😬🙊, instead of as Nick Scryer. Or even the hot blonde chick. Awesome game, one of the best of all time, easily.

Our only hope is that THQ Nordic picks up the rights and makes a remake/remaster/sequel

If memory serves me correctly, I think the team slated to work on a potential sequel were pushed over into the team and / or reassigned as a new team to make the reimagined Area 51 game.......

get outta my miiiiind! haha loved this game! co-op was weird but story was spectacular. Another game that doesn’t get mentioned much is The Suffering. The story was compelling enough but the design and hallucinations, just worked so well and was what made it as good as it was.

I remember playing this game demo repeatedly off of one of the old Xbox game demo discs. I got ahold of the full game around 2005. It was definitely responsible for some of the most memorable fun in gaming from my childhood. Aside from Halo of course

The closest thing I have played that gives off some of the same vibes as Psi Ops and game out in recent years is Scarlet Nexus. That game did not disappoint.
