McDonald's Playgrounds in the 1980s đ Recipe for Disaster?

- McDonaldland Playgrounds were fun for kids in the 80s at McDonald's, but they were all removed by the mid-90s due to safety concerns. We got a chance to climb Officer Big Mac again as grown-ups. Let's take a nostalgic look at the old McDonald's Playland of our childhood!

I am sooo jealous! This was my favorite thing on the McDonaldâs playground! I used to climb up there and laugh at my parents when they said we had to leave. I knew they couldnât get up there to get me out! đđđ I can still see my mom standing at the bottom, shaking her fists at me, threatening to leave me there if I didnât come out. đđđđ
That's so funny!! It never occurred to me, but Officer Big Mac would make a great parental diversion when you don't want to leave the playground, lol! Smart girl!
@TechMasterJason Iâm sorry you missed it. It was really awesome, especially that play place! I miss it so much! We had so many awesome things in the 80âs.
its a great piece of history... i played in this each time that i went to the McDonald in the late 80s and early 90s
For sure!! Thanks for stopping by our channel Andre!
I was born in the mid 70's and grew up in the 80's, and I remember enjoying the play area outside McDonald's as a kid! I especially remember the Officer Big Mac Tower, along with Captain Crook's Twisty Slide!
I was born in 1984. I remember seeing these play ground but unfortunately, I wasn't able to go to a Mc Donald's until 1995. Great memories still. Thank you.
I remember McDonaldâs birthday parties
Yes!! We both attended a few of those back in the day.
Yes! I went over to one out of curiosity as a kid, the area was partitioned off with crepe paper. An employee was building a castle from paper cups, and everyone froze and stared at me.
@@lapislazarus8899 youâve seen what no child was meant to see
Oh, I have fond memories of that thing. Officer Big Mac was my favorite piece of equipment in the playlands. Especially the ones with holes in the hat on top you could look out of! But yeah, I imagine it was more fun for us back then because we were little, and more spacious to climb around back then. The last one I can remember at a McDonald's was finally taken down in March 1999, well past the point I'd stopped playing on them, but it was still kinda' sad to see it go.
I would absolutely climb in one of these if I had the chance, so I totally understand taking this rare opportunity to try it out. Even though I know it's not going to be the same as it was back then, I'd just enjoy the nostalgia washing over me.
Nostalgia is the best! There was no way we were gonna pass up the chance to climb up inside that thing (despite being totally oversized for it now, lol!) Thanks for stopping by our channel and sharing your memories!
Holy Guacamole Shit , I remember Officer Big Macâs head there because I used to live in West Philadelphia where there was a McDonaldâs fast food joint which once had a Playland with pieces like the one in the video there , But after nearly 40 years those ride on are no longer there because the restaurant underwent a massive makeover & now that Playland is gone .
I remember hitting my head in these crazy things ending up with a golf ball. One kid got his leg stuck in one of these contraptions and started screaming. I'm sorry but it was funny then and it's funny now. I'm terrible. đ
Ouch! What in the world were they thinking with these things?! LOL!! It's a wonder we survived the 80s!
The late 80s and early 90s, when courts started paying attention to ambulance chasing lawyers
Goodbye McDonald's Playland and other fun stuff.
@@Our80sLife I remember climbing into the elevated burger cage when I was a kid. It was instantly boring to me.
Those play land structures were the best part of going to Mc Donald's. I survived too!
In the 80s in Canada, our McDonald's had the play structures indoors since it was often snowy outside. It had the big slide, a Hamburglar jail, ball room, the merry go round and some Fry guys. There was also a birthday party room. We hid in the ballpit or the jail when our parents wanted to leave. Lil sh!ts that we were. Lol
LOL!! Thanks for stopping by our channel and sharing your memories! That's interesting that your play structures were indoors back then, but of course it makes sense. We were in Texas burning our butts on the super hot slides, ha! I totally remember hiding from my mom at my friends' house when I didn't want to go home too!
Here in Australia, those playground pieces were also boiling hot in the summer. Thanks for sharing.
Oh I bet! Thanks for watching!
I love you! That was my favorite of all the McDonald playground! Subbed!
Awesome!! Welcome to our channel!
I remember that thing being a lot bigger when i was a kid....I'm pretty sure a few kids would climb in there at a time. I might be to claustrophobic to try and climb into it again, good job Abby for getting in there and reliving those childhood memories!
I was thinking the same thing! I remembered getting up in that hamburger with other kids, and now it seems SO much smaller! Thanks for watching!
Hehehehe you're so cute and tiny to do that. My big ol' backside would get stuck and the jaws of life would have to be called :D :D :D I miss those playlands though. DID YOU KNOW that back in the 80s at Towne West in Wichita, the McDonald's was indoors in Towne West near the north end where the Sears was (Back then the sears wing wasn't even there) and across the hallway from the McD's was the McDonald's Play Place in a store slot. It had all of the old McDonaldland equipment including the big mac cop you were in :D I miss the Fry Guys seats :D
Oh my goodness, that's awesome that it was in the mall! I had no idea about that, how interesting! It makes me wonder what ever happened to all those things. When I was looking for pictures of the different characters, I saw one that a guy said his dad found in a dumpster, eek! Can you imagine finding such a treasure in the trash?? These things are selling for thousands of dollars if they're in good condition. I guess everyone wants to buy back their childhood, lol!
OMG, I so remember the officer big Mac jail! I certainly would not be able to fit in it today
LOL!! Isn't it hilarious that we actually thought that was fun getting stuck in hamburger jail, ha! Kids these days just don't know how good they have it!
I recall burning my ass off on the metal slides here in Arizona. Also, we had woodchips instead of grass. No phones/tablets just good ol' fashioned fun.
đđ€Ł
I worked at McDonaldâs and a kid got his head stuck in the Big Mac cop and they had to use the jaws of life to get him out.
Oh my goodness!! No wonder those things were all removed, yikes!
uh oh uh no he got trouble in inside of
offer big mac head he got stuck uh no!đ±
Thank you for sharing. I remember we had one of these at our McDonald's. The 80s were so awesome
Thanks for watching our video Jerome! Long live the awesome 80s!!
i remember always playing in the hamburger was so fun for kids so fun just fun watching theses videos seeing it all again brings me back I think we had the best time
We totally agree. We were so lucky to grow up back then!
Officer big Mac still freaks me out. It was so claustrophobic. If more than 1 kid got in it you were screwed. 1 time unit was enough for me
LOL!! Truth. đ€Ł
@@Our80sLife ?
I had outdoor playlands but not with the iconic characters! What a fun airbnb. Next week me and my wife are going to stay in an old community building from 1842.
Interesting! I ran across an old promotional video when I was doing research for this, and the McDonald's franchises had to purchase those character pieces. I bet they were quite expensive, and some locations probably opted for cheaper, non-licensed ones. Staying in that old building sounds neat, have fun!!
Ah the memories!
I remember!! What a fun and creative video. I remember Keith almost getting stuck too LOL đđ€Ł Watching Abby in there makes me feel claustrophobic!
We survived!! Both of us were too big to climb up in there, but we were determined to do it anyway, LOL!
I remember playing in one like this in Plano in the late 70's and early 80's and until seeing this video I thought I remembered them being much taller. Crazy how big we perceive things to be when we're younger. I thought this would for sure be 10 feet high to the jail part.
I know, right?! We used to climb the ladder, and now all we have to do is stand up in there, lol! And I'm a really short adult, by the way (4'11") so that really made me feel tall, ha! The one I went to as a kid was on Belt Line and Plano Road in Richardson. I believe it's actually still there, but the outdoor playground is long gone, and the entire place looks like it's been rebuilt.
I never got to play in any of the play structures because they were a little before my time. But I remember one McDonalds in my area had life size sculptures of the McDonaldland characters outside near the entrance. I thought that was so cool and was sad when they removed them. I also remember getting a cassette tape in my happy meal of Ronald McDonald singing songs with kids which I loved
We miss the McDonaldland characters too, sigh. I wonder why they were removed. Our local McDonald's in college had a bench where you could sit next to Ronald, so of course we enjoyed going there and taking goofy pics out front. Ahh the good old days!
I miss looking at the officer big mac :D thank you for showing it.
Sure thing! Heâs really cute, isnât he?! So nostalgic đ„°
Good memories! Although when Maccas arrived in Australia I was to old for the playground! đđđ
Oh dang! Sorry you missed the hamburger jail, lol!
to many "injuries" frum the deep fried apple pies also...so no more...!! Nice find & great Air-n-B marketing idea...fun to..Thank You AKA, Enjoy the week. Love Kelly ...!!
Thanks Kelly! Oh those fried apple pies were delicious though! We had a blast staying at the 80's house!
@@Our80sLife the apple turnover was what made the meal for my tummy...mcD really let me down when they switched to the baked pie...you guys make sucha' sweet couple...Dallas sure sounds fun..Thanks again...!
before the time she went in i was like that's so small do little kids fit there body's in those rails? after:GOSH THATS BIG
We could cram a bunch of kids in there back in the day, lol!
Oh cool!
@@Our80sLife lol đ
@@Our80sLife Iâm sad đđđđ
i did that as a kid and now that im 40 i would pay to do that now wow great vid
It wasn't as fun as we remembered but a cool experience nonetheless, lol! Glad you enjoyed our video!
I remember the last one I ever climbed in. It was on Airline Blvd in Portsmouth VA. I almost didn't get back out without needing the jaws of life. LOL
Yikes!! Hello claustrophobia!
i do remember them but my mom wouldn't let me play in them because she said they were too dirty..lol but i saw them a lot over the years..lol thanks for bringing me down memory lane...:-)
Your mom was probably right! At least they were outside in the fresh air though. The indoor play areas with all those climbing tubes and ball pits gross me out. There's no way it's clean in there, lol!
@@Our80sLife oh ya i agree...100%
I remember as a mom having to break up fights, keep an eye on shoes when the playland waz crowded and skirting around upchucked happy meals from excited munchkins. McYuk
I feel so cheated. My generation built all that fun for your generation. You're welcome. đ
Hey Donna! Yes, I'm sure the McDonald's playground was not a fun hangout spot for moms, McYuk indeed! Thank you!!
Back in the good old days before McDonald's had those twisted tubes and ball pits for a play place!
Yes!! Those indoor play areas just seem like germ magnets to me! đ
@@Our80sLife Thank God I outgrew the play area at McDonald's long before they switched to those tubes and jungle gyms and ball pits and stuff!
I saw the Captain Crook playground at one McDonalds quite a few years after it had been removed.
Cool!
You don't see them much anymore because franchise owners have been complaining about the high cost of insurance they must carry on these playground attractions! Only some of the corporate franchises still retain any of them, and even then, they're quickly being taken out because of the COVID threat, and the company's changing image...
Makes me sad
Emma say mommy I hope she donât get stuck in theređđ Emma wouldâve love McDonaldâs land thanks for sharing enjoyed watching thumbs up have a beautiful day guys
Tell Emma I made it out okay, ha! Thanks for watching :)
Great memories of those days along with great shirts of those days :D
Thanks for stopping by our channel! đ
As a child i was held prisoner in one of those by a playground bully who declared me his captor.
Oh no!!! Sorry for your traumatic childhood experience. I didnât even think about it, but those old playground burgers only had one way up or down... ideal for bullying, yikes! đŹ
@@Our80sLife No Trauma incurred! LOL!! But yes an ideal structure for a clever and slightly sadistic 10 year old :P
@@akniznik what does sadistic mean?
@@alexishewett916 would it not have cost you less effort to simply type the word in to google then to ask?
@@akniznik it would have cost me less effort to ask then to look up the definition, Iâm joking đđđ€Ł
0:32 Uh-oh! I want the McDonaldland Gang back! Thanks to those stupid killer clown rumors, Ronaldâs gone!
LOL!! We sometimes see Ronald at some of the older locations, but the rest of the gang is pretty much gone, sigh. Thanks for watching our video!
we didnt have them here in the UK i remember that our Mcd's had a train in it which was also tables and chairs, well done Abby for having a go on the ride
Interesting! The train sounds neat! It's funny how things are different within the same company based on your location. I wonder if your food was the same junk we were eating, lol!
I just walked by a house that had this in their front yard. Honestly kinda unnerving up close.
đ
Man that was the best time, playing on the playground.
Oh ya!! We miss those carefree days for sure (but maybe getting stuck in the hamburger jail, not so much LOL!) Thanks for watching!
@@Our80sLife Anytime! Hope yâall are doing well!
I used to play with them in Washington State never got hurt once so much fun miss those old days
Fun! Thanks for stopping by and sharing your memories Carlos!
I have memories of these in WA as well, but I definitely got burned by the burgermouth incarceration.
I remember how McDonaldâs used to have those playgrounds. I heard a lot of McDonaldâs were taking them out because kids were getting sick from them.
I also remember how back in the day, they had McDonaldâs in Walmart. A lot of them were replaced with Subway. Theyâre both kind of a thing of the past nowadays.
Oh yes, now that you mention it, our Walmart had a McDonald's in it. There was a life-sized Ronald McDonald statue on a bench out front that we used to take pictures with, lol!
@@Our80sLife
I remember that! đ
Awesome channel
Thanks Mikey! Welcome to the party!!
Y'all are Mc-Awesome!
Thanks Carol! Good one ;)
You guys are adorable
Aww, thanks Chris!!
whats that in the backround a cage ride that goes up and down?
There was a Grimace ride that also resembles a cage, but I think it just had springs underneath so it would bounce when kids jumped inside.
Hahaha! I actually watched the video hoping weâd get to see Keith get out of there!
Aww man, we forgot to film that part! It's been highly requested though. I guess we'll have to go back there some time, lol!
so inspirational
Thanks for watching!
I think part of it was liability and lawsuits, and climate change was why they were removed.
i remember the playground!
Yes!! It's funny how things like McDonaldland disappeared without us even realizing until much later.
That BurgerMouth jail was so HOT! It would scald you in Tacoma WA, let alone Texas!
Ha ha, yep. Ahhh, the good old days! LOL!!

Hey , I have a request for the 80's. My name is Cory . Have y'all done the Teen Wolf filming locations?? Y'all are great :)
Thanks Cory! Teen Wolf is a great 80's movie! It's supposed to take place in Nebraska (which is actually quite close to us) but it was actually filmed in Los Angeles. Darn! Not sure when we'll be visiting California, but if we ever go there on vacation, we'll be sure to check it out. Glad to hear you're enjoying our videos. Long live the 80's!!
When I grew up in Austria in the 80s, it was always very, very special for me to have meal at Mc Donalds. I loved it madley. But I always was afraid of those Mc Donalds figures, especially Ronald Mc Donald. I hate clowns, even as a boy. But I always loved the food. In Europe our Mc Donalds food is less smaller, than the typical US-Sizes.
Wow! I think McDonalds was pretty commonplace for kids in the 80's here in America, probably because our parents didn't feel like cooking, ha! We hate clowns too, thanks to that scary scene in Poltergeist which scarred us both as kids, lol! And yes, US portions are usually bigger (not necessarily a good thing though!)
No thanks. I'm claustrophobic!
Itâs funny how these things shrink the older we get, lol! It definitely seemed smaller than either of us remembered! đ€Ł
@@Our80sLife A few years ago, I took my nieces to Chick Fil A and they had a play place. My youngest niece Astrid wouldnât leave when it was time to go so I had to go into the play place to get her. It was so cramped and claustrophobic. I donât remember Play Places being so small. Lol
1:07 Hey! Have you forgotten someone?!
Someone in N.E. Ohio has that exact one in their backyard. I and somebody drove past it once.
Cool! đ
I'm from Latin America but my parents don't have enough money for something like that :/
We remember those! There's still an outdoor playground here in Huntsville AL. It doesn't have one of those awesome Hamburglar jails though. Here's some footage that we shot of it back in 1989: czcams.com/video/vGLBATCIwAw/video.html
Hey guys!! We're so honored that you watched our video. We recently discovered your channel and have really been enjoying your old home movies. WOW! I also had a Sony Handycam, which I got for Christmas 1987. I only wish I had recorded as prolifically as you did, but I still have some treasures to share from the old video vault.
