A sneak peek of Chris Lord-Alge's 'Recording A Band' series in which he dials in a powerful rock drum sound using classic analog equipment such as the Fairchild 670, Neve 31102 EQs.
We are proud to present our first ever series on tracking with star mixer Chris Lord-Alge! Hosted at studio B of the world-famous Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, CLA tackles a recording session with rock band Phil X & The Drills. Our detailed footage of the experience shows every step of the process - live space considerations, microphone choice and placement, instruments, amplifiers, DI boxes, Neve 8068 console setup, signal routing and processing, gain staging, phase correction, headphone mix creation, recording the band live, adding overdubs, production and arrangement, level metering, sample rate, bit depth, monitoring, and finishing the rough mix. Aside from sharing invaluable technical knowledge, Chris Lord-Alge imparts the reasoning behind his practical and efficient workflow, while advising on how this approach can be adapted to other environments and equipment. - Hudba

Chris is hilarious, I remember once he said “we can turn it all the way up, nobody’s going to die”
As crazy as it sounds, that quote was what changed my mixing game. I was always taught to never be dramatic with EQ when I went to school for it. "3db boost or cut should be fine, you don't need to do more than that". Watching CLA EQ drums and vocals and making big moves like a 9db boost was the wake up call that transformed everything.
@@TM42 totally- if it sounds right it sounds right
@@TM42 Both are important things to understand. Don't overdo things that sound good already, but you don't have to limit yourself to small adjustments if that's what something needs.
@@sebastianlindon8992 Absolutely, I agree wholeheartedly. But when you're just starting out and being told what I was told early on while working on less than ideal recordings (done by other students), it would have been beneficial to have Chris's advice. I've since gone back to those recordings with what he's said in mind and it's changed the overall product dramatically. But you're right, both are important to understand.
.@@TM42 Your teachers were either stupid and didn't really have any real world experience with only ever reading blogs o mixing or they were always recording top musicians with top equipment in the proper acoustic environment and knew how to use the equipment perfectly to not have to touch tracks basically at all. EQ first and foremost is a tool to correct the sound at the end of a chain of multi variables. From how cose you stand, the effect to the eq curve the mic has built in to the tone of the person's voice. You then fator in variables like how good the person's ear and recording techniques are which in your case was likely shit as you said the tracks were from other students. So there really is no rules except fix what sounds like shit. Sometime there's a lot of shit on a track you need way more than just 3 db cut to get it out especially in a world were a lot of people track themselves now and then send it to get mixed. The tracks usually fucking suck and need a good amount of clean up.
"never be shy of using the EQ... thats what its here for"... LOVE IT!
My favorite line ever! the possibilities are endless at the end of the day!
He’s a mix god.
Holy shit!!!! That’s a BIG drum sound!!!
Hahaha yessir!!!!
every time they switch to the drummer I think it's CLA in a wig LMAO
😂😂😂😂😂
OMG ... hilarious! 😂😂😂
Exactly what I thought lol
cannot unsee it now...DAMN IT!
I scrolled down to find this comment and here it is 🤣
You know the dude is truly a real engineer, because he starts all sentences and doesn't finish them... The best engineers I've ever worked with did the same thing!!!
LMAO😹😹😹I wish to know why they do that...
instagram music producers: "NEVER EQ IN SOLO, NEVEEERRRRR"
CLA:
Lol, most of them are just a joke.
It's true. 😅😅😅😅
what? So how do they hear those minor things? I think this is a "new-school" "knowledge"
"One Simple Trick to Get Great Drum Sounds"
@s dee exactly. even in film audio school they taught me not to eq in solo. once you've begun your mix, you're in context. before that it's all about creating one. in a film it can be your first scene, or maybe even a loud part in the middle of the movie. for music, you'd want to go off your loudest/most defining elements
2 minutes in and it already sounds better than 90% of sampled mixes
It's rather easy getting drums to sound crisp and punchy in solo, but that quickly fades away when embedded into a dense mix
@@nenntmichbond BURY IT!
@@nenntmichbond yeah but those drums are fire my guy.
whatever
Room, mics, drums and cla. If you got those then you’ll get it 😂
These guys look like two friends who showed up to a Halloween party unknowingly both dressed as Wayne Campbell

Is that Wayne's world?

Is it right that he boosts 5 at 20hz and 7 at 8k on the Pultec?
Excellent on all counts (the drummer, the studio, the eq choices, the compression choices, the communication with the artist, the drivingly positive & confident attitude, and the final result... and, last but not least, the video: not just crumbs of a teaser, but long enough to be informative, and with the settings & choices recaps in onscreen graphics, instead of just quick flyby shots)!
👍👍👍
absolute
In 5 minutes flat he made it sound like a Green Day record. He definitely has a sound.
I know he did Greenday, but these sound as big as Led Zeppelin.
That's because is mentor on recording tracked led zeppelin. In the interview with beato he talks about it, quite interesting
@@nicologumina8444 I think he learned from Bob? (And he even used that studio?) Did Bob mix any LZ?
@ I’m going to guess that he remixed a lot of LZ due to him doing a ton of those 70’s and 80’s compilation albums that were popular in the 90’s.
in 5 minutes? It took him years to find the right formula he's using on every record. Also, the desk and the gears make the sound.
"I have had this shirt since '85. And it still fits!" 😉
0:52 *kick dbx 160 / ratio 3 / post eq
0:57 *low boost 5 / freq 20 Hz
1:30 *10 kHz high shelf / +4dB -- 110 Hz low shelf / +8 dB
3:12 true dj skills
Yes. He is professional and the result is really good but wtf is that between 3:15 - and 3:22 ? 🤓
@@adamtakacs6550 I think he's A/B ing the room in and out and changing the EQ at the same time very very fast, at least that's what I think happened. He's basically able to know what decisions to make EQ-wise by completely cutting the room and overheads and then adding it back to complete the sonic pictures, like a painter might start with the characters and end up with the ambient light. He's just doing it so fast that it's hard to follow. A true master!
@@adamtakacs6550 I think he boosted the bottom end of the Overhead mics to check if they are in phase with the snare and the kick. A big low-end boost means the phase is correct while a tiny change when adding 6 to 9 db in the low-end of the overheads indicates a phase problem. Since the phase was correct, he instantly removed the low-end boost.
@@adamtakacs6550 Dirty EQ switch. He then disengaged the "EQL" switch. Even the most amazing, legendary consoles need some TLC (I know this all too well).
I like how he's not shy with the buttons! Like if he's going to boost 7-8k he goes up 6-7 or even 8db! I love his aggresive style when mixing drums :)
Sound is king! I tell people all the time, stop mixing with your eyes. Listen and adjust until it sounds right.
6:11 when he brings in the room track... Wham! Wow, what a sound!
It's so exciting to see how every instrument comes alive when the ingeneers start to do their magic. I love that part of making a record.
Honestly Chris might be my favorite engineer to watch. I know some people don't like him because they say he can be a little critical. But, I think he's just been doing it so long he knows exactly what he's doing. I also think he's just real and tells things how they are. Which I love about people. No sugar coating or babying. He's just an honest and real dude. Great video guys really interesting to watch!
If he's so critical then he's the person I would want to learn with
@WorldRenownedCFE But I don't see you doing it. Plus this guy has been doing it for more than 30 years. I was literally just leaving positive feedback. There's literally always one guy in the comments like you.
@𝕎𝕠𝕣𝕝𝕕ℝ𝕖𝕟𝕠𝕨𝕟𝕖𝕕ℂ𝔽𝔼 💪 What a stupid thing to say. I guess all those astronauts and nuclear physicists are just a bunch of 'knob turners' too 😂Anyone who assumes a lack of complexity in a field of work they know nothing about has got to have a pretty low IQ. Also, it makes sense you're a sovereign citizen aswell, explains the Dunning-Kruger / main character complex shit you got going on
@@kurtzon that critical troll probably uses garage band to record if that. Losers always jealous of others that are successful. Rather than criticize he should try to learn from others who have done it but that’s why they’ll always be losers and winners.
I was trained to track like this but lately have been doing more and more in the box. Watching this really makes me miss just getting hands on! This is really the best way to make a track come alive in my opinion, especially with drums! You could see the excitement in his face as the frequencies etc. started to line up and that's what we aim for for the listener too.
The drummer is kickass. That sure helps make this sick drum sound even sicker.
That room sounds crazy good
Studio B at Capitol records
@@niallmurphy272 charlie puths studio and studio A is next to it where "we are the world" was recorded it was owned by charlie puth but now he has changed his place he works with manny marroquin an excellent mixing engineer
That was my exact thought when he solo’d the room
near 100% he's got marble room reverb on that track
Capitol Studios in Hollywood sound awesome. Just about every major artist has recorded there. Every piece of vintage and modern gear is available at the Capitol Studios. Plus the ambience, the lounge, and the general atmosphere makes puts the artist and staff at ease. Great place.
Absolutely love that video. CLA is doing a fantastic job, but let's not forget to give props to Brent Fitz, unbelievable drummer !
that soundcheck is better than my whole drum mix :3
LOve watching CLA best videos i have found. So clear and really just love watching him work. So much fun to work with good musos properly tuned gear. Such great and loaded with knowledge videos!!!!!! subbed!!
Mr. CLA is fantastic. The master. I'm glad seen he working and creating this amazing drums sound.
Thanks I like your choices. Great punchy and natural sound. Great musician too.
When he brings in the overheads you hear what money can buy
Couldn't agree More
Great drummer and the room sounds KILLER!!! Thank you. 🖖
Very impressive! It's great to see an amazing drummer and a legend engineer come together and make magic happen like that! Those drums were sounding incredible after 7 minutes or so in! Oh my god! 🎛️🎚️🎶🎵🔥
@@musiccalgary More than amazing. I wish I could play like that!
That is a freaking great drum sound....great room, drummer and engineer.
What a collection of great gear, and a 670 fairchild to boot!
I had my doubts in the beginning but wow, just wow.
Is there anything more delicious than some great grooves, mixed and EQ'd well? So listenable.
Great player, amazing kit (selected and tuned by the LA drum doctor), amazing mics and gear, and one of the best mix engineers alive. Lovely!
Wow!! This man dominates that studio like a great conductor does with a 40 piece orchestra! I'm from the day when the engineers at some of the big studios in New York used to spend hours tweaking the drums to a point that we all became disenchanted about cutting tracks once we got the green light to do so. It was no longer fresh.
I been doing music for 25 years and every time I see him work makes realize how much I still know nothing. Humbling!!
I truly LOVED this. Thank you!
One day, I hope i get the chance to even be half the man you are CLA. You inspire so many of us! Thank you!!!
Better start eating 😂
Awesome CLA is a total inspiration.. I use his tips and listen to everything this man has to say
he didn't say much here.. Oh, he likes his Fairchild..
My God!!!This is so beautiful!!!
Awesome! Thank you Mix with the Masters! 🔥🔥🔥
I've been dying for something like this thank you
Love watching this stuff!
Chris is the goat of mixing, everything he touches is gold.
Thank you for including the written description in the video for us novices🙏
Couldn't believe how much impact and raw energy it had by the end of the mix (tracking mix) .
One of the best ever demonstrations I've found of an analog mixing process using outboard gear and a proper mixing console.
I enjoy using the software emulations of popular analog gear. Particularly Scheps 73 (Waves Neve 1073 emul), Softube CL1B, CLA 76 and the Waves SSL E-Channel. But they don't have the same effectiveness and oomph that a hardware unit could provide. But with my current budget they've still served me very well, as I don't have the thousands of dollars to afford the real thing, as i'm still a student.
CLA's a legend at his craft and a great teacher too. Not to mention the talent of the badass drummer too :)
Great video guys! I can't wait to get enough in-studio experience to even try to get close to his level of talent.
What a lovely passion job
I can't believe I didn't know about this channel before! Crickey! Absolutely amazing 👌🏿👌🏿
Watching from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤❤️
These drums sound amazing
I’m a singer/song writer/drummer/guitarist. This has inspired me to work on my placement of mics, and the utility power of eq. I hope tour video makes lots of money, but I just wanted you to know that YOUR video inspired me to work harder on my recording, and the value of a solid drum sound. Thank you.
Man they sound so good!
This is fantastic material!
I found it interesting to hear the complete sound at the end of the video, then go back to the start again to remind myself what the sound was like at the beginning.
I'm struck by how casually he throws those Pultec knobs around while I agonize over 0.1 dB changes. Obviously CLA has massive experience behind him, but still... reinforces the importance of just using my ears.
this💀💀
Analog is much more forgiving then digital. It's almost hard to go wrong sometimes with real gear.
This is just amazing!
This is great! I've been watching a ton of mixing/recording videos from various people and learning a lot but this one was a game changer for me. "Never be shy with the EQ" I was always making little moves and trying to make room for things. This is the opposite. My drums sound better, my guitars sound better. Like I said, game changer.
I love recording/mixing drums!!!
"Overheads, that's the whole picture of the record." Interesting way to think about it. The space is the place where we will experience the art.
CLA is The best! Brazilian fan here!
Made me so happy I'm still smiling
Really fantastic lesson!
That's exactly how is supposed to be done.
Mr. Rupert Neve is smiling from the heavens.
EQ's sound beautiful
Killer! Starts with the kit sound in the room.
6:17 "Let's see what this thing does!" -Any engineer ever
Amazing sounds, as always, and a literal masterclass in tasteful rock/pop drumming.
This guy I have up running on my studio speakers while mixing my own productions...A/B comparison....thank you! Mixing with the masters!
So interesting and captivating
Oh the guys awesome. Gets results soo fast
I wanna watch this whole sesh!
My $0.02 on drums - Don't discount time spent *tuning the kit*... and the value of a good sounding room!
You can try to eq a wonky kit in a bad room all you want, and will never get close to this.
Yeap, dressing the turd is what every CZcamsr does with plugins for days!!!
Yep. that is most of this video. Room/Drummer/Tuning
I got an $80 used kit off Facebook and gutted an RV and track everything in there. Put new heads on, tune it up,
nice mics and an audio eng. Degree. Sounds great. I've seen drummers record outside and it sounds fine. Treated rooms are mostly for the placebo effect to tell your brain it has to sound better. When it comes down to home studios.
@@mattjwatson5089 Good rooms are good rooms, they need scientific desing to be good. Some panels in a room, is not ”good room”.
@@DrSamEWith close miced drums on a kit, those 57s are pointed right on those heads. Then i put a gate on the them, sounds clean and punchy, any four walls will do. I have a degree in audio engineering, Im not just playing a guessing game. Those walls will help during mix down & mastering through monitors.
thanks for this .... really good
Wow 👏 this is incredible
Superb. What a sound, what a drummer!
What a masterclass!
Amazing flute sounds dude
That sounds Fukin great!
Interesting content. This is priceless!!!
He makes it look really easy, well, I guess it's easy when you are working with top level musicians at a top level studio with top level equipment. Hope that one day I'll be in that place.
Trust me... that room, and drums tuned like that.. pretty easy. Little compression and basic EQ.
the gear ain't what makes it easy for him. Although having a great drummer is the most important thing, Chris could make a great record without any of this great gear or facility. Give him any mic, any preamp, any DAW, crappy tracking room, etc.. and he will make something better than you or I could make in a 20 million dollar studio. It "looks easy" for CLA because he is incredibly good at what he does. don't get it twisted.
It look easy because Chris knows well what kind of eq, compression, gain in, etc etc to use for every kind of situations... trust me, it's not the gear or studio, that is just for speed up the workflow...
I got sit in on a mixing session with him and he works super fast and commits to decisions really quickly. It was pretty inspiring to watch.
Top class musicians? Yes
Easy because he has good gear no. If you dont know what you re doing it doesnt matter the gear.
He's just a top level professional
It’s interesting how much better the room sounds than all the heavy eq’d mics
Not surprised, but good to see CLA dial the EQ so fast🤘
omg, this is magical....
This is gold!
lol. the hi hat mic.
I love CLA's approach. "what's the worst that could happen? no one is gonna die..."
He has the Fairchild 660 & 670, look gorgeous
CLA - always great energy - confidence.... never booooring!!!!
Good information! Helps a lot :) Thanks
