I can´t understand how Paul can play that amazing bass line and sing at the same time....
He's Paul McCartney, that's how
because he is a genius
@paolito Amazing, right?? It's equally as difficult to play percussion and sing at the same time too.
MAYBE YOU'RE AMAZED!!! 🤩👍
Are you kidding?? Ive been a left handed bassist for 20 years now & I cant do it. With all respect: YOU try it! ! 😖😖
Paul is the Bach of popular music. I completely regret that one day he will not be among us.
I hate to even think about it 😢
Na man, he'll be here there or everywhere.
Among us
he will live forever in our hearts
think he is more alike mozart
I love Paul McCartney and the Wings 🪽 they ard a phenomenal group 🎉🎉. Paul and Linda McCartney are the best power couple ever🎉🎉.They bring out the best in each other on stage and off stage. They come each other perfectly 🎉🎉 They have a love that's beyond words 🎉🎉
Mr. McCartney is playing that bass line and singing something totally different is truly admire and amazing!! Greetings from Aleksandra, Zagreb, Croatia 🇭🇷❤️😊
Damn, how he sings on top of that bassline is a jaw-dropping enigma.
Same could be said about Geddy Lee
...No explanation is necc for Pail McCartney or Geddy Lee.
Just dont let them crowd out other self-accompanying bassists of great skill. We may all have equal rights from God's p.o.v., but we weren't all created with equal gifts...
Many of these men & women on my list are grossly unrelated. Then again, many had no desire for the epic-level of fame which McCartney attained to & still has. Others shouldve received proper public recognition & critical acclaim decades ago:
Steve Winwood -- Singer, multi-instrumentalist, & R&M man. He IS a one-man band & recording & mixing engineer all to himself. You name it, he plays it, with exception of brasswind & woodwind
George Benson -- ditto. Everything Steve does, George does
Benjamin Orr of the Cars -- Leading alto, backing singer (alto & tenor), songwriter. Rest In Peace, Ben, both you & Ric: 1947--2000
Janice Marie Johnson of A Taste of Honey -- Songwriter, lead soprano, backing tenor, bassist (chief instrument), rhythum guitar, 7 piece drumset
Timothy B. Dalton** of the Eagles -- Backing tenor & alto, underrated & under-employed as a lead singer, bassist, songwriter
Marcus Miller -- Dear God! Blues & jazz capacities of celestial heights: true blues scale, diminished augmented & altered minor scales. Only jazz artists that compare are Duke Ellington or Miles Davis, truly
Lester Snell -- Chiefly a bassist, but also a rythum & strings arranger, songwriter, & producer. Not a vocalist, but who cares. Time will escape me if I name off the many acts that he was instrumental in making a success of. A direct pupil of the great Richard Hammond & an associate of Clive Davis. (Not an assoc producer of Clive, but a friend)
both Hammond & Davis enjoyed the pleasure of producing Aretha Franklin, firsthand... Clive is originating founder of Arista Records
*EDIT:* Yes, that's Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles! My mistake 🤬
I know it’s absolutely insane!
Yes Geddy LEE is amazing! I love Rush! But Paul has such a a sweet voice, he can sell you on anything!
Luigi Cornielles, it just takes practice... one of the tricks is when the phrasing of the lyrics is actually in sync with the bassline, other times you have to separate the two.
Not easy for sure, and then at the end of the night, one person realizes what you did and compliments you, and it’s NEVER going to be a female !
i swear this is the happiest song in the world
it is!! also ob la di ob la da for me
this man put Happiness in songs like we're always looking for Happiness but here it is it's in paul's songs
This song makes me so HAPPY!
Love how you describe it!
I think is much nostalgic than happy.
I agree
I am 52 and remember hearing this song on the radio as a child. When a song grabs you as a kid and the song never loses its magic, you know it’s a classic that will live on forever.
I'll cry like a little boy the day this man leaves this world.
Me too...The same can't be said for Fauci 😅
Paul wrote this song because all the critics were saying that all he writes is love songs. So he wrote this and it went to number one! He said I won't write hate songs:)
Welcome back
Not only Critics, but John said it as well! It is an interesting story for sure.
I LOVE this song!!! It's EVERYTHING that is needed to counteract the world of negativity we all encounter each day. Paul McCartney is one of THE most positive people in history who has had such a positive effect on humanity as a whole. A life well lived AND it's not over yet! 💖💖💖
Of course, rock critics were in love with Led Zeppelin and the like, they trashed Pop, but actually Pop is musically better than rock proper. From here Phil Collins took off.
Why he is the "best beatle". He has his agendas and beliefs, but he never let it sully up his music. All but he and Ringo. However, Ringo, to me, can't really write songs consecutively.
I love how Paul's bass is at the front of the mix. This song deserves it, the bass line has such groove
Example of a song where the bass line drives the entire flow of the music. It would sound incredibly dead without it being loud. The rickenbacker really gives it a great tone that fits the song nicely!!
Yes Paul McCartney is a awesome singer and great bass player
This and Goodnight Tonight. Two of his best.
Magic rick bass line.
My favorite bass line ever.
Thanks Paul for existing
Paul is just the best! Singing, playing, + writing, and this WINGS lineup was #1 💯 'I was at this show sitting front row center' 🎶 priceless! 💓 Rocklove ArtyThan ☆♡☆

The thing is, he can do it standing on his head. Thank goodness Stu left the Beatles.
God I'm so jealous of this man's ability to sing play bass, piano, guitar. As well as write the catchiest songs. What a talent.
We’re all jealous of him, lol. All that talent AND he was one of the most beautiful men to ever walk the earth. Really not fair at all.
He played drums often in the studio too, like Band On The Run.
The bass lines in this are insane and he’s singing while never missing a beat incredible
He always made every bass note count, Rickenbacker Bass sound immortalized.
The skill required to play that complicated bass line, while pulling off top shelf vocals is off the charts!
One of the greatest musicians, writer's and pop vocalists of any generation!
God-level singer, bassist, musician, songwriter, etc,
This bassline is quite simple, but it's true that he has played some insane basslines while singing

Paul is so dam cute
McCartney´s masterpiece. The music, the choirs, the bass chords. It´s a tremendous answer to John ("...and what´s wrong with that?") McCartneys´s greatness would be seen with the years to come. Timeless song.
His melodies alone put him on par with Mozart.
When you get criticised for writing Silly Love Songs, you write another one and it goes to number 1 in the U.S in 1976, take that critics, the people have spoken.
In the 1970's, Paul McCartney was criticized at times by John Lennon and various music critics for writing so called light senseless pop songs about love. Music critics were even questioning McCartney's ability for writing great music - like he had done earlier in his career. This song was McCartney's answer he gave to those "brilliant" music critics.
"Silly Love Songs" topped the charts nearly the entire Spring/Summer of 1976, and finished the year at #1 in Billboards list of best songs of 1976. On a side note, the beginning of this song sounds to me like a factory making and churning out silly love songs. Silly love songs? Keep them coming, Mr. McCartney. We'll take them all.
And it ended up being one of my favourite of his songs.
There's _nothing_ wrong and everything right with that! John could be a mopey bastard. ;0)
nycinstyle The other thing that is brilliant about this song is that he wrote the melody to be extremely simple so that it wouldn't conflict with his cool bass line and also makes it much easier for him to sing while he is playing such a complex base line. When you get right down to it the first verse of the song is basically on one note, again allowing him to focus on the complex bass line.
Pianoman 70s style Yes, I agree. No one will ever doubt someone who says Paul McCartney is quite simply a FANTASTIC songwriter. His phenomenal success as a songwriter is second to none.
Why did Lennon take such a stance on McCartney for writing silly love songs? Despite the fact on Double Fantasy Lennon's tracks were silly love songs, I'm not saying any of the songs are bad I actually love them. But his love songs weren't much different from McCartney's ones!
Gordon Smith Well, Double Fantasy came out in 1980. A good seven to nine years after Silly Love Songs. John perhaps had a change of mind and heart when he now had a family in the way that Paul did. Living with a wife and child he now loved. Or perhaps he was playing those mind games.
Some legends say that the man at 1:54 is still holding that note today...

If the man had never sung a single note ... if he'd never put a pen to paper or never composed a thing ... Paul McCartney would still go down in musical history as the man who re-wrote the book entitled "How To Play Bass". His totally unique and melodic approach has elevated pop bass to delicious heights 💕💕
Absolutely!
He played 28 songs in that show. Now who plays 28 songs on one evening these days? He's the best.
Thomas Raukamp oof nowadays he plays like 40

Even when Paul McCartney writes a silly love song it is bloody brilliant!
Our Sentimental Sir Paul 🎶 🎤 ❤️
Paul McCartney and George Harrison produced sublime harmonies together. You can hear their harmony in your head when he sings.
Paul McCartney is the best bass player in the world. Change my mind.
this comment is soooo true!
He’s good and the bass lines on many of his songs are creative but he’s not the best. Because then you would have to include the different styles of music and each style has musicians where that’s their forte in a certain style. Paul McCartney isnt a straight up jazz bass player or funk player for example. He can have influences on the style, but to be the best all-around no. I’m sure there are studio musician bass players that can more readily Play different styles. That’s why professional musicians hire them to do studio work because they know that they were looking for a certain sound and recognize talents of these musicians.
Sorry but a very rock n' roll Euro-centric view of "the world"...Paul is talented no question and I don't think there is a "best" (music isn't a competition, most of the world can't seem to realise that...), but as for level of difficulty guys like Larry Graham for example plays even more complex basslines (slapping no less) and sings effortlessly and was around during Paul's time. Look up "Hair" by Graham Central Station as proof, Modern bassists such as Thundercat, Esperanza Spalding and countless other jazz/soul/fusion bassists...Paul is mega popular because of Beatlemania, people believe he's the best because of that popularity and that's what everyone was told to believe. Even in Rock, there's a ton of bass players that play and sing more intricate basslines and melodies: Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Les Claypool and Sting to some extent. The world is a big place; I didn't include the wealth of bassist/singers from Africa, South America, Asia...
@@johndough247 I think his mind has been changed.

@@tomokrayeah I wondered the same thing...how could he do that rooster strut around the stage, lifted the bass up 90° and swinging it around, while he's playing this super complicated bass line....I'm sure he's not playing to a track...
@@ironwood9 I guess the answer is, 'he's Paul McCartney.'
I think I've said this before, but this song is NOT silly! One of Paul's best bass lines. He was the best bass player of the 60s.
His bass playing on Let em In kicks rear as well. Always felt that Wings at the Speed of Sound was a bit of an underrated gem.
Chris Squire?
John entwistle?
The song is called Silly Love Songs because it was a reaction to a remark of John Lennon. He said that Paul was only good for silly love songs. Or something like that. Paul's reaction was this song: the number one song in England in that year. Lennon had a god complex. He talked down many excellent musicians.
Chris Squire only evolved from the 70s onward. Before that his playing was pretty good, but still not on McCartney Level@@TheForkhandles

Yes. Macca is so smooth. Fiddling with pick shows how in the groove he is. As a guitarist, I admire that composure. I saw him in 2015, in the front row, we did the Wings to each other. Love him forever
Why is flipping a pick special? It doesn’t make a different sound sideways does it?
Oh wow! Thank you for pointing that out, great detail
@@moonrock5324 the opposite happens to me. I tend to flick my pick on rests when I get fidgety playing the bass.
He's simply adjusting the pick because the pointed edge has probably moved to a less comfortable position due to sweat. Its makes no difference to the sound but it does increase the chance of striking unwanted strings with other parts of the hand and generally feels "out of place"

Hah! You folks noticed that, too. Fascinating to see Pauls drummer is also left-handed
@@magnificentmuttley154 , Joe English didn't play left handed. He plays what is called "open handed". Instead of his right stick over his left on the high hat, he plays the snare with his right hand and hi hat with his left.
@@MikeBUSA Perhaps Joe possesses some ambidexterity in that case. If he's really right handed, then its interesting to know that Phil Collins- - although right handed- - plays snare with his right, while counting with cymbal pings & working the toms with his left. Didnt think about it until now, but whichever foot works the bass drum should be a reliable indication of what handed a drummer is 🖐
After 10 years on a 5- piece set I dont consider myself an expert. But when the rhythum calls for somekind of reversal, only thing I can do is cross one hand over the other... My RH working rack toms while making muffled taps LH on the hi hat for example
@@magnificentmuttley154 , it's just a preference. Mike Mangini of Dream Theater and Danny Carey of Tool are two examples of open handed drummers. There may be times they go more traditional or move their hi hats toward center more. That's why music is so great - there are no rules.
