    That works well, also try a sliding bevel, once the slates sit flat after any kick or tilt at eaves level, all you need is to mark from side lap to valley cut, use your level, mark and cut.

    I thought I was the only roofer to use slate hooks. Glad to see others using them. They are more secure than nailing. One point for you ,there is a hook tacker on the market that speeds up the whole process, amazing device.

    I always slate like this. Ya don’t slate yaself in then n have to start walking over new slates. Good bit roofing that! Cutting in a valley the proper way!

  • @thebeardedwunderer1503

    Can you push the slate up out of the clip to remove a tile? Asking as I might need to put a vent pipe up a slate roof with what looks like this fixing system.
    Thanks in advance!

    Aren't they suppose to be nailed as well as hooked ? Won't they rattle with wind otherwise ?

    • @roofingshiteroofing1189
      @roofingshiteroofing1189  Před 2 lety +2

      No they can't move. There's a hook at the bottom, one on each side and one at the top. There more secure than a nail down slate

    Surprised the perps aren’t struck out ? Perhaps you did further over to the right, but plenty of tolerance between slates. How come you’re not using a slate knife or your combi hammer/slate knife ? Don’t think you’d be cutting some of the slates I’ve used over the years with your machine. I’m guessing you’re using Spanish slate and a bit softer in my experience. Nice job for me, plenty of pride.

      No point in perps when you're falling into a valley or a hip cut.
      It's easy enough to tile or slate straight enough.
      Into a verge or an abutment then yeh ping your perps

      @@Reddwarf1994 Yeah, I’ve done it too but never with the ‘ old tradesman ‘ who taught me !!!! No slates touched til the marking / setting out was done, his way or the highway !!!

      @barrywood7400 fair game to any old school tradesmen who do things the right way. Working by the book is dying out sadly.
      In this instance though perping is not necessary in my opinion

    • @roofingshiteroofing1189
      @roofingshiteroofing1189  Před rokem

      That's a hard question to answer, At the start you'll only be as good or bad as the person who is teaching you. This goes for an apprenticeship or college course. I've worked with people that have every thing in life, fast cars big hours, but are shit roofers. Also worked with college teachers that are shit. Try and find a small roofing company with a good reputation. Ask other trades who they would recommend for a quality job. Not a cheap job. Other than that move to Europe

    Don’t use slate hooks. Just leaves the slates prone to needing repairs and falling
