I was at Udorn '70-'73. Spent a 3 month TDY to Danang in between. I was in the 432nd AMS, radar nav. repair. I worked on Captain Richie's F-4 that had some captured MIG technology installed. We worked with a civilian from McClellan AFB in Sacramento. Great memories of Udorn. I lived off the first circle in a pretty plush place. Thanks for the memories.

Was stationed there Nov 72-Dec 73. Thanks for the video, brought back a lot of memories. I was a jet engine mechanic, spent most of my time down on the trim pads, my co-worker was Robert Wilson, lost track of him over the years. I suppose just like every one else, u wish u had stayed in contact with your friends. Would like to go back to visit Utapao & Udorn, I’m sure it has changed a lot. Thank all for your service.

I was at Udorn from December 73 to December 74 and thought it was probably the biggest adventure of my life. I had many friends there and wish I had kept track of them. I also wish I could have afforded a camera to take pictures like Dave did.

Photos are kinda fuzzy like my memory. I was a tower controller at Udorn in 72 when all hell broke loose and we became a fighter base with all the added squadrons. Crazy times at work and off duty. We won the West Pac ATC facility of the year and were the busiest single runway airport in the world. Thanks for the memories!

This is very nice. I remember many of these scenes. I was at Udorn RTAFB, Sep 71 thru March '73. I flew the F-4D and the RF-4C there, as a young Captain. My 'home movies' are more of the flight line and airplanes. If you look at Google Earth aerial photos of the base today, you'll find most of it GONE! All the old wodd bldgs are now returned to jungle, only the BX and metal BOQ remain. New airline terminal on far west end.

  • @TheThaistyleusa

Thank you for the vdo, it brought back many memories growing up in Udon. I was born there in '64. My mother married an Air Force member stationed there. He took me inside the base very often; places like the BX, Commissary, Theater just to name a few. He and mother used to live on the other side of the freeway near the opened field right across from the base; not too far from the main gate. Anyway the vdo is great and it shows a lot of history of Udon. It does not look like that now

Dave, thanks! It's been a long journey to say the least. Remembering a few years back starting with Udorn Research Group. The search continued looking for those that were served at Udorn RTAFB. Over the years seeing and contacting a few. Some success and some losses, tough it has been. What can I say, we cane home many years ago and it came with us. Udorn RTAFB 74-75, 432nd Security Police Squadron, Tiger Flight, Bravo Sector and Night Reconnaissance Observer Det. 5 40th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron.

I was in Udorn Mar '70 - Mar '71. I saw the F4 crash into the TV station April '70 just a month after I got there. I was an air traffic controller and once brought in (GCA approach) a C-119 with 17 feet of it's right wing shot off. Great pilotage on that landing! I would love to go back to Thailand some day. Wonderful country and people.

I was at Udorn Aug. '69 to Aug. '70 and I was across the street from that RF-4 crash that slid into the concrete building that AFTN was operating out of. Nine airmen died, most of the adjacent buildings (except ours) were destroyed. The house girls were jumping out of the two story BOQs. I was working in the APO. Scary as hell. You posted 4 years ago, I don't know if you'll see this. Upon my return to Nellis AFB I learned to fly, and have been flying ever since. I would like to go back to Thailand. On my bucket list.

I see it has been six years since your post. i was at Udorn Jan 1970 to Jan 1971. I also remember the F-4 crash. I was in the NCO club when the aircraft flew directly over the club. Also the pilot landed on the indoor theater and the weapons officer landed in the outdoor theater. That was a sad day.

Fogot to mention... there is a reunion of Udorn Officer's Club employees (the girls who worked in the bar and restaurant) this month (Sep 2010) in Las Vegas. Most of them married USAF officers (imagine that!) and live in the USA today. My wife is one of them. Email me via you tube thing if your wife qualifies!

Out of focus (& badly so).. probably also out of touch with the reality of the times and facts there. I know Mr Dwigins, to a small degree. This is a man who allowed publication of some of my personal pictures of Ubon and Udorn RTAFB flight-lines (and off base scenes) after an open AGREEMENT with me not to do so. I have a lot of trouble trusting his judgement let alone even one his "facts." I had to go on one webpage and ask that my pictures of F4's (I have the original negatives with tail numbers) be taken down (the principles behind the publication was my problem, the pics could have only come from, by, or through, Dwigins). This man is out of touch, and he lies. I would never trust him. He's a poser.
