  • My 2 cents on angle grinder. I used lots of different one in 20 years, and in this video I talk about a few that I own at the moment and some that I tried in the past fey years. At the end I present my favourite of all time, personal best and toughest angle grinder, the Makita 9005B.

45+ years in the trade I've used Pretty much all the types and the Makita 9005b was my favorite. I would also use a 7inch 5/32"disc with a made up 7inch 120degree guards. Just like store bought when built properly. 120degree guards at that time were legal via OHS for pipe. 180degree Guards grinding on pipe are downright dangerous. Always changed out the 6ft cord for a 15foot. I worked a lot on big inch pipe. The grinders stood up quite well. I had 6 on my truck at all times. never had to fix any in the field. Owned 15 in all states of repair and would once a year spend 2 days fixing and repairing. Switches, brushes, and cords would be the main fix

Manufacturers are very smart. They dangle life time warranty as a major selling point, knowing that most customers never file for it.

You can still buy the 9005B in Canada. One of the best selling Makita grinders still.

    Great insightful personal review.
I have not been able to find a review/comparison of 7”/9” grinders. Makita, DeWalt, Rigid, and Milwaukee all have 15 amps around the 4 HP; DeWalt has one at 5+ HP.
I work mainly with concrete and am not clear on what makes the ones advertised for that specific application so expensive.
A video covering that size range, the relationship between HP to amps, and the difference between metal vs concrete applications would be a huge help.

Hi max, relationship between HP to amp is a good question indeed. For welding specifically, 7" and 9" grinder are rarely used, so I cannot help you with that. For a 5" like the 9005B in the video, what make it so tough is not just the amp rating, but also the faster speed. The 1000RPM extra on top really help to give HP for hardcore grinding. Like any engine, you get more torque at hi speed. On top of that, it gets a better cooling since more air is flowing through. If I can help you to choose a big grinder for your task, I can say that the Ridgid 7" is not that tough. I had it fix after 1 year of light use. It was the carbon brush holder that melt away. They must have been made out of material that does not like heat. For the makita's the brush holder are made of bakerlite. A brittle heat-resistant material. Stick welding handle are made of that too. By the way, the repair on my ridgid was free. Lifetime guarantee.
