Update on The 12 Rotor Rotary Engine

- A few months ago I posted a video talking about how many rotors a rotary engine could have. In that video I mentioned the current record holder, a 15.7L 12 rotor rotary engine which the world hasn't seen much of since 2015. Well that's all changed now since Rob Dahm recently uploaded a video where he and the builder, Tyson Garvin, broke down the engine and how it was built and are planning on pushing this engine to it's limits. Make sure to check out Rob's video here: • I WAS GIVEN THE ONLY 1...

The final boss of the RX-7 community
Mazda RX-7 community?
Rx-12?
@@lordjasper1988beat me to it lol
Rx-14
Does anyone know when the rx-15 comes out?
This engine probably gets negative fuel economy
So it sucks fuel out of thin air?
Gallons per Mile.
Even robs 4 rotor is gallons per mile, this thing is drums per foot.
@@isickofitgallons per foot
Well it was in a race boat and worked well
Fuel economy rating: Drums per foot smiles square
Fuel economy: No
😈
Lmaoooooo
Gas drinking : a gallon per yard
One mile per gallon.... 50 gallon tank 440 pounds... Super hard suspension....or competition for dragster small tank...killing it a quarter mile at a time SWEET❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉👍👍👍👌👌👌💪😎
"Let it burn a little coolant, im not taking it apart again"
Ah, my own method of small block/chevy lm7/ls1 style v8 engine maintenance.
If there's oil under it, there's oil in it, if the oil gauge shudders it needs a quart and if the coolant temp stays around 120 degrees, 8t needs more coolant.
Else?
Beat the brakes off her. 😂
Put it in a miata
Yes please
I agree
a honda fit
It doesn't work that way. Tiny car , big engine. Basic math says that it doesn't work.
That engine needs a mid engine chassis. Kit car.
Otherwise its will not fit and work properly.
@felixsantiago5606 hey liberal no shit it was sarcasm
“2,000 horse power Naturally aspirated” 🤯
you gone suffercate if you go tu close xD
Fr that’s actually insane 👀
How much power y’all guessing for when it’s under boost 6,000 hp 🤷
@@Black__hoodie I wouldn’t doubt it, the parts better be strong enough for 6,000 though.
@@fullmindstorm probably not if it’s all aluminum
I just watched Rob assemble it yesterday. Its going to go big. 900 lbs of pure madness.
that's actually kind of light to be honest...
@@chupacabrito I just learned about an F1 Judd engine and it blew my mind. A V10 that weighs only 320lbs. WUT!?!? 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 that’s just doesn’t compute in my head lol
"It's stock bro, I promise, literally stock" 😂
Well there is no production version, so yes it’s ‘stock’ to the owner 😂
“It’s not even boosted bro”
Hope he puts this monster in his Lincoln Continental lol
Lincoln is probably getting the 6 rotor, but maybe.
@michaelh.1262 I guess he was joking but I thought he said he was putting the 6 rotor in the Diablo 😅
@@TakeNoShift he said he would get a roller diablo if he were to do that
@@ImKairyu I doubt that's easy to find, but maybe he could find a different chassis entirely to put the 6 rotor in. For some reason now that the idea of the 6 rotor going in the Diablo is in my head, I really just want to see it in an exotic chassis.
@@TakeNoShift ive always wanted to see it in a viper, but mid engine might be pretty crazy.
I want to hear how this thing sounds. I bet it's a crazy sounding machine.
Just find the videos..there a videos where the owner of this engine doing burnout and price for this engine..half million😊
czcams.com/video/Q2IFWveYBRs/video.html
Just you wait, Rob will be testing the engine soon as it has been recently put toghether
@@fieqakimyeah, the amount of small parts like seals and stuff makes the engine a nightmare to work on. It has like 3/4 gaskets per tri rotor housing, and it has four of them.
@@Ferrari255GTO i already watch this engine inside a rx7 that doing donut and burn out..the owner or maker of this engine is maybe delete or hide that videos..and that videos is like 6 or 7 years ago where the builder talk about this engine and how it fit inside of engine bay, what is the price and much more...this is times when rob dahm or mazzei formula is still unknow
Rob Dahm is rebuilding the 12 rotory engine. I have seen his videos. That engine weighs in at 949 l.b.s.. That weighs just as much as a Dodge 426 HEMI V8 engine.
That engine is insane. The amount of man hours spent had got to be up there. I love rotary engines,my dad had 3 different RX-7 and a RX-8 growing up and I loved those cars
Ive been on the track with the 6 rotor from New zealand. The sound when that thing just flys past you is insane. The only thing that comes close is oldschool 90s formula 1 engines
One of the very cool things about this engine that the temps aren’t as high as you would think
CZcams needed something like this it was getting kind of stale. Now I got something interesting to follow.
Rob just did a full rebuild video on this engine . it's so damn complex it would make anyone rip out there own hair just trying to make sure it's timed right .hopefully in his next video we can see it running again for the first time in years. wish him luck this engine is a pain in the ass but it's in the right hands.
Yup it hit 2k hp on just 4k rpm and there's 6k more to go 😏😏
Honestly don’t think they would be able to get it over 7-8k before it overheats. Sadly 12 rotors running 10k rpm would produce Way too much heat for anything to cool😢
@link2g715 false, there's way way bigger engine's and don't need that much of cooling.
this engine was well built with intentions not to overheat 😏😉 and there's even more room for cooling 😎 👌🏻
@@link2g715 the thing is running a constant stream of cold water through it unlike a normal car where you are limited by the capacity of a colling system. This was build for a boat.
However the 2k hp thing has been prove to be false. The builder has said that in a video of rob dahm allready.
And how should that thing even produce 2k hp? It is using mazda rotors, so that means its prettymuch 6 13b's together. If we take the highest claimed hp for a n/a mazda rotary then we would be look at around 1400hp.
Now we might lose some internal drag losses, but there is not 600hp gained in that.
And yes there are ways to get more power then mazda did. But i dont think this 12 rotor has insane port timings from what i have seen. So there is no way this thing would be running prettymuch 330hp n/a 13b's. To even get 330hp from a naturally aspirated 13b you are allready looking at peripheral ports wich this thing clrealy didnt have.
The problem isn't just heat, it's engine harmonics, a rotary can rev high because it's essentially counterbalanced by the other rotor.
Having them in that configuration may lead to engine harmonics that could break the engine if revved to high, id be surprised if it ever reached over 6.5k
Yeah that’s bullshit even the builder says so
Could you imagine doing apex seals on that thing?😂
Sounds like a "not my problem" 🤣
Rob mentioned during the rebuild that the engine goes for about 300,000 miles, in marine applications, before apex seals need replacing… those apex seals were amazing! 😅
The video is out over an hour long and I'm here for every minute
Rob Dahm is the hero we didn't deserve but desperately need
Throwing around the hero status . Next just need to put out the trash. Your legend. 🤦♂️
@@karipaturketo5438 your grammar was so subpar that I genuinely don’t know what your point was
*_Im so glad the rotary legend finally got this engine!_*
Best of luck brotha, it will soon fly and be the engine that takes us into the sky 🌌
Every piece of that engine looks like jewelry!! Seriously beautiful and awe inspiring 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I don't even know anything about rotaries but I watched that whole video fr
All 60 secs of this short? If so, kudos
What a freakin beast of a boat motor
thats what it was made for lol
Maintenance gon go crazy
Runs so smoothly 😍👍👍
When you mix rotors and Rob Dahm, you know it's gonna be awesome 😂
I learned of this engine from your video and got so excited when it was delivered to Rob because I knew what it was. The breakdown was so entertaining to se the quality of work that went into that.
Mechanical masterpiece still feels like somewhat of an understatement. Lol that was a fascinating video
In that exact video, Rob says the people claiming these crazy dino specs and potential 5000hp are chatting bollocks
Oh the treehuggers are gonna LOVE this one..! :D
That’s a lot of really fast spinning Doritos
Can't wait to hear it running and see it in something
I’m surprised I’ve not heard of this. I need to know more. Sounds kinda sick like on the dyno. Could barely hear it. But what you can hear the HP just dying to get out!! 💪🏻💪🏻🇺🇸
I wonder if that would fit in my 2001 Wrangler
Def would fit in my 2005 miata
It bolts up to 454 mounts from what i remember
Perfect engine for offroad use 😂😂
This sounds like an amazing project!
Rob is just the most polite car guy ive ever experienced
It only ever made around 300hp as stated by the builder and owner of the engine on rob dahms video.
what it HAS DONE and what it CAN DO are 2 separate things.. key word: "capable"
@@lucasseal1exactly, people seem not tp understand we know via physics the fuel, air, weights, barometric press, etc etc to calculate the power an engine COULD pit out perfectly optimized
Nu-uh
That’s why nothing else was herd?
Probably in idle 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Would be cool if they made a new Mazda with this in if
A 12 spinning Dorito engine, what a time to be alive
Such a sick dude I met him in 2022 in Colorado for my birthday by chance too lol it was such a cool meet
rob dahm is a legend
No, he’s a little kid wannabe of the car community that you children watched enough that he could afford anything at all. That’s why he’s been borderline facing bankruptcy through it, even crying on video about how he couldn’t afford to finish the 4 rotor time and time again. Took him 10x longer because of that.
@@joshroi8610bang on dude. He's a rotary fan/enthusiast at most. To this day I still don't get why these kids swing from Rob's nuts so hard
Everybody loves Rob he's such a down to earth guy and is very smart as well I think that he is the best suited for this build and I think we're all excited to see what's to come
Hoping Rob puts this in his indycar thing
I can’t wait to see this done in 2041
I definitely want to see more
Rob is a rotor motor god
Nope. PPRE are the rotor gods
@@rippedup1931been searching these comments for someone with their head screwed on properly 🙌
Rob's got it so something is going to break in every video
That’s some serious talent right there

I think if they put six turbos on meth inject and three wet kits it may even hit 7or8 thousand with like 6thou torque
put it in a camaro@@richardschafer1911
Concentric rotary is the future
I don't think so. I just looked into it. Still seems to have the same problems the wankel rotary has and then some additional problems to go with it. The apex seals are still attached to the rotors and then the shape of the rotors will lend itself to some excessive NVH unless counterweights are used, which is far from ideal. The Liquid Piston engine seems to have solved all the problems of the Wankel rotary, namely the fact that the rotor seals are located in the rotor housing which means they're easier to lubricate.
@@EdBoi18 like i said Concentric
A mechanical masterpiece in my mechanic mind is something thats straight forward and easy to work on lol
I'm literally gonna subscribe just because you involved rob dahm in this. 😂
Daddy Dahm is the best
Rob is a badass mofo
Them motors want you to drive them like you stole them. I love it. Nothing else like it
Mr. Dahm's awd rx7 is going to be even more beast
That engine would be perfect for a 90s NSX.
Why ruin an aluminum dream car with a 900lb engine? I'm sure you've seen boosted boiz' turbo kswapped version, ya?
@Torch4ya
My personal rational would be, simply, because I could.
@@sampsonlll1825you could but the engine couldn't, have fun melting your nsx though

Don't take abstract thinking soo personally buttercup.
I’m getting chilllsss god I love rotary engines
Can't wait to see it (almost) done (we haven't put it on the dyno yet) in two years
Im looking forward to seeing this!
That’s impressive like to see more of this engine and what it’s going to drive
Those turbos are beautiful.
He needs no luck, he's the legend with knowledge and skill
Just watched a 1hr and 20 min video that rob put up on it the other day
That crucial Compaq screen.
Crazy vid would love to see more
Rob dahm look like proud uncle seeing that beast
I like your videos bro keep you the good work my dude
Rob Dahm gonna be slaying it.
I do remember that CZcams short and BAD ASS 2000 PLUS HORSE 🐎 POWER .. BIG FAN HERE...
I wish Rob can somehow make this thing fit into a heavily modified wide-as-fuck RX-7 and race a dragster. That'd be *AWESOME!*
Can’t wait to see its potential realized
Was just waiting for rob to be somehow mentioned
Been watching Rob for a while he always does cool ash shiz
Would love to see this finished.😊
I wanna see this thing absolutely WALK a topfuel dragster....
I just watched a video showing Rob Dahm building this 12 rotor motor
We'd better get a continuation of this series about this engine
Its hard to classify this piece of amazing engineering and the guy who dreamt it and made it a reality
looks very heavy. amazing none the less
Men are awesome for creating these beautiful machines 🤯
now this engine must be placed on a modern aerodynamic based chassis
Rob is crazy
An LS sized rotary, absolutely insane and beautiful.
Now you need a transmission strong enough to handle it
Hopefully the gentleman is aware of The Powerglide. Probably the most robust automatic trans ever made
Holding that microphone is super cool.
A quad turbo setup would be the way to go, similar to Bugatti with 2 smaller turbos for low to mid range power and the 2 larger turbos for mid to high range 💪💪
I'm here for it bro
Love it.
Rob is legend!
Rev's up into a torque monster 💪
❤️❤️❤️🎯🎯🎯💯💯💯 yes we want more!!!!!
This could finally be an engine capable of fulfilling what the Devel 16 needs
What a beast
Dang that's a really rotary rotary. More rotary than other rotaries.😮
Wow super cool I’m not a big fan of rotary engines other than design but this is awesome
My name is Tyson, and I approve this message!
He just put up the video of the reassembly on his channel today
Would love to see the engine after it finds it forever home. With it having Chevy big block dimensions and even the mounts and transmission housing I believe were Chevy big block bolt pattern so the possibilities are endless, but if I remember correctly it was going into a boat.. what ever it is installed to I'm sure it is an epic machine in design, performance, and beauty..
It probably won’t even sound the same as the original running video. Since Rob has said he’s not sure that he is installing them in the same firing order, and hence balancing positions. Going to be very cool to see how it progresses.
