MRA Windshield Spoiler - Does It Really Work On A BMW 900 XR

  • It seems like aftermarket windshields/screens have been around since the beginning of time. There are all shapes and sizes for every kind of bike. I take a look at 4 "main" brands and pick one, based on size, looks, overall value and install it and test it to see if it reduces wind noise and wind buffeting.

    I’ve recently stumbled across your channel, and I have to say that it is a refreshing change from a lot of other bike channels. Useful information and bikes ridden in a realistic way- not at 12000rpm from beginning to end. Good job Scott. Subscribed.

    Thanks for the review of the MRA Windscreen as well as your reviews of the BMW F900XR. I just bought the windscreen to install on my 2020 XR (which I purchased about 2 months ago). Having ridden a Ninja for years and now in my 60's the last 18 months what with Covid and all has not seen many miles on two wheels ( the sport bike riding position doesn't agree with my back anymore). The new bike has totally reignited my love of riding. It is the perfect bike for riding in the Hill Country of Central Texas. Again thanks. You deserve a kick back from BMW Motorrad and MRA as you helped me to pull the trigger on both. Cheers!!

    Another great review, thanks Scott. I have a similar MRA screen with spoiler lip on my Kawasaki 1400GTR (Concours 14) and can echo all of your comments. While it's not as silent as my Pan-Euro screen was at full height, it really does a great job of cutting wind noise and buffeting, and wait until you ride with in the rain, mine does a great job of pushing rain-drops off my visor. The finish is just as good as the stock Kawasaki screen, with no high speed flex (I read lots of aftermarket screens are made of cheaper and inferior plastic, which can flex at highway speeds) and they look good on the bike too, plus the adjustability means you can tweak it exactly how you want it. I am a big fan of the MRA screens and think they represent good value for the quality of product. Cheers :-)

    Excellent review as always! As TexMexStrada has already stated it's worth fiddling with the various settings to get it perfect for you. From what I've read the general consensus is the spoiler should be parallel with the main screen with a small gap between the two to improve the airflow. ( I haven't got a BMW but I do have the MRA spoiler) One thing I will say, if it's set up wrongly it makes things worse rather than better! (Just my experiences, as always YMMV)

    Enjoy all your reviews, including this one.
    I actually took delivery of my MRA Vario Touring screen for my 2020 Yamaha Tracer 900 gt.
    Without doubt a vast improvement on the stock screen.
    After much research and a few emails to the super friendly folks at MRA, the decision was easy. Also €142 included the shipment to Southern Spain.
    Definitely stronger, nicely tinted in the smoked version and more ridged than the stock version.
    Very importantly, it is engineered correctly so as to ensure that on full lock, neither the mirror or hand guards hit the screen.
    As it is slightly wider and slightly higher it reduces the wind effect well, although I still feel some wind on the top part of my crash helmet, there is no severe buffeting and noise is greatly reduced. As I am 1.82cm, I was not expecting miracles as you say 😂.
    Keep up the good work.
    Regards Paul

    Hi Scott. Thanks for the informative review of the MRA screen. I took delivery of my new F900XR two months ago. Fantastic motorcycle, with the wind roar (in low screen position) and a bit of buffeting (in the high position) being the only negative. A bit of research pointed me in the direction of MRA. Your review helps a lot. The only problem is probably going to be delivery times with the current state of world supply chains. Down here in NZ we are a long way from Europe, and I fear most of summer will pass before it gets here. I'm still waiting for the panniers and top box to arrive from BMW.

      Even some BMW dealers send you directly to them when you buy an F900.
      I was thinking about buying the wunderlich seat and try it, as they have a 60 day return policy and, if I don't like it 400€-much, just return it.

    Just bought the MRA for my F900XR, had high hopes as I've used their screens on other bikes with great results. Sadly, on the BMW it just creates lots of noise around my helmet regardless of how the height and spoiler is adjusted. Can't help but think the problem lies with how BMW have designed the front end ergonomically, as it seems lots of people can't find any brand of windscreen to give good results with this particular bike.

    I have Givi airflow, also a spoiler like windscreen. Oddly enough I have with this windscreen an opposite experience. I am 6.3 foot. I have been fumbling around with it for half a year in the highest position mounted on the bike, crappy results, whatever I did. Now it is in the lowest position, tilted back a little. Much, much better. Thing is.. it's different for every rider and moto combination. Keep thinking out of the box. maybe it helps someone.

    I’ve bought two very similar screens with wind deflectors and put them on the same bike; one worked well, one didn’t. For the record, the MRA worked, but the other one worked well on another bike. My takeaway is to do the research and listen to the forms, these things are very nuanced and performance depends on bIke/rider variables beyond the design of the windscreen.

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  Před 3 lety

      So true! The windscreen mfg. has to know the aerodynamics of the bike to make sure it compliments that first, then improve upon it. Looks like MRA did their homework on this one. 👍

    Hi Scott. Did MRA cause or reduce/improve any head buffeting?

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  Před rokem +1

      The stock screen had lots of buffeting and wind noise...as most OEM screens do in the middleweight group...so no surprise there. I'd say (if I had to give a number) the MRA screen reduced buffeting buy about half, 50%. Made it tolerable, but and this is a big but, reduced the wind noise by about 75%, which made it great for touring at highway speeds.

    Thanks for the informative video and foreign name pronunciations! You asked what's missing and as well as the engine bars (mine came from the factory on the new bike), I would say also absent are:
    1) SW Motech upper bars. They share a common mounting point with the stock engine bars so can coexist. These heavy gauge items also stick significantly prouder of the engine bars giving better all-round protection for bike and also any lights attached to them.
    2) A slip-on titanium Akrapovič exhaust to add bling and a richer sound

    I always wonder WHY manufactures can't supply a windscreen that actually works. I have recently bought a BMW R1200RS and the screen is useless at highway speeds here in Australia. 100 - 110 kph. I sold my Honda ST1300 because it was becoming too heavy to maneuver in parking lots etc., but at least the electrically adjustable screen had LOTS of adjustment to suit whatever speed you were doing. I have fitted an MRA extension to the stock R1200RS screen, it's an improvement but still a long way short of what a touring machine should offer. Great review as always Scott.

    • @NothingToProve
      @NothingToProve  Před rokem

      Well, you just said the magic word there, "touring" machine. Both bikes you talk about are sport/touring machines and not touring. This is why I got the 1250RT, it has the wind protection of a tour but weighs about 50kg lighter than the ST1300. And still has shaft drive :)
      So there's your solution, get the RT :)

    I have the MRA screen on my 750GS at the moment but not having much success. I like the look but it’s too narrow, the wind over the top is fine and I can ride with my visor up at speed. However the wind comes off the sides and hits me both sides of the helmet making for a very noisy ride. I also have the Puig touring screen, it wasn’t much better but what an ugly screen. Your video is one week late, I just bought a Puig without the airfoil for my Tiger 1200 XCA and like you with so many different option its just a guess to know which one's going to work, so that being said I think you need to order all the screens on the market to do a comparison so your subscribers will know which one works best. Lol 😁.
    I went with the clear, why did you go with the tint?
    The puig being a little taller than the original moved the air over my head to reduce wind noise, but did not eliminate the wind noise, in 5' 9" tall. I'm assuming if I add the airfoil it will reduce more wind noise, but I really don't want to because I like a clear view, and I'm thinking those black brackets would drive me nuts.
    I almost went with the MRA, but being in the states the puig was quickly available. The packaging from RevZilla was great but my screen was scratched, most likely from the factory because the original packaging was in perfect condition. If you haven't tried the product Plexus for plastic, I highly recommended it, it removed all the scratches, I was very impressed with the product.
    Thank you for the review.
