  • @JDHealingTimeOnEarth This video contains excerpts of John Denver's testimony before the Appropriations Committee of the U.S. Congress in March of 1986, two months after the Challenger disaster, where Congress was deciding whether or not to offer further funding to the space program, and in particular, whether or not to allow civilians back into the space program. John's testimony is characteristically eloquent as he shares his thoughts and feelings about the matter.

A more innocent time in our country. Oh, how I miss it and abhor the division with which we must live through. God speed John Denver.

What a guy! What potential! What love and foresight he had for our world! It's extremely sad that there isn't anyone who has the love and desire as he had!

Watching this makes me miss John. I can't think of a more articulate musical artist before or since. He was an important, informed voice who articulated his views in ways that made sense. What a great loss.

Wow, just watched this in 2022 and thought how thing's turned out for him and families after the tragic events of that flight. How he must've been so so heartbroken too. And yes his insight to us all as humans on this planet were incredible, his thinking of life. Then how sad his own life ended. Love his song's now I've listened more deeply.

Thank you for this outstanding presentation.
The multiple talents of John Denver and his commitment to work for all of us have not been recognized. This is the first time I have seen this.

I grew up listening to John Denver, he is the one who inspired me to play guitar. God is our Creator " there's no dougthout , what a humble life he live.He Worn us many years ago that we were not taking care of our planet threw nature the sea the air and always helping human race God gave him many talents and gifted person he was . And Space!! Wow!! He Finished the Good race. Rest in peace.

So articulate. He would have been a leader in any field he went into. It made me cry at the end when the song was played. I don't know if we know more now than we did then about why the O rings failed even though he mentioned them, and decisions/pressure to go ahead with an avoidable disaster and loss of life, so I'd question the unswerving support to NASA in light of that but have to admire it and his devotion to space exploration too. I don't follow space exploration too much but would say I agree with him that they still need to do more to let the person on the street who isn't into what they do, what they discover and how it impacts our day to day living to get more support.

Notice how John wasn’t defensive but willing to take in what else was said. That’s what we need now is to hear one another and speak civilly.

What an exceptional gifted brilliant man John Denver was .I never knew John was into space exploration. Watching this Congressional hearing I am learning so much., John is a great teacher on this subject.Didn’t Obama shut down the space program?🇺🇸🌎🚀

I have just seen this testimony from John Denver for he first time and he expresses very well about why space exploration should be constantly funded to continue with it's various exploration programs. As an example, in 2022 the James Web Space Telescope program I am glad it was completed and put in place despite the budget overruns and the missing of the various deadlines is now doing science not long after being put in place. If what happened to the space shuttle USS Challenger destruction was ever the reason to dramatically restrict NASA's funding and activities, NASA would not have achieved anywhere near what they have reached now. Think about the Apollo program. Despite the capsule of Apollo 1, later named in honor of the crew, caught on fire in January 1967, the Apollo program continued with Apollo 8 ending up being the next launch to occur. If the space program was stopped there if people got too nervous to continue, the space activity that has occurred over the subsequent 55yrs would not have happened and we would have been a lot less technically advanced as we are now. The Challenger destruction was a tragedy and that and other tragic occurrences since, including USS Columbia tragedy, and those yet to happen should remind us all the space exploration is very dangerous and difficult but we should press on and continue so long as the various space agencies get the funding they need to learn from the errors of the past to minimize any errors for future space flight as much as is genuinely and realistically possible with no real guaranties of safety should be expected. This address should replayed through broadcasting to remind us all, inside or outside of the space industry, why we should continue with space exploration. We have only just seen Pluto for the first time in 2015 and his Kuiper belt system. That is what we as a species need to continue to achieve because we are a curious lot and we have a need to know what is outside to door, over the hill, in the valley and we have a need to find out if we are alone in the solar system, the galaxy, the universe and how it all works.
