I think people who say things like "DX7 sounds brittle and lifeless" just never figured out how FM works. The DX7 is capable of producing some of the most lush, organic sounds of any electronic instrument I've ever heard. Not lush in the way that a Juno's chorus is lush, but in the sense that the sounds can be full of nuance and texture if you know what you're doing. I guess synths like the Juno-60 and the Minimoog just sound great all the time, which is really handy if you're not a veteran synthesist, but I think dismissing the DX7 as "just an 80s pop keyboard" is ignorant, and you'd be missing one of the deepest, most capable synthesizer engines ever conceived by humans.

That pad here at 5:29 and sound at 9:36 are just superb. It does show how capable is that synth. Most people regret the DX sound because they just play presets, as programming is complex.

Agree with you. A lot hate for the DX in the world. The biggest problem was never the synth. ;)

You can get some fantastic sounds from just the algorithm settings alone. There's many reasons why it's one of the best selling synths of all time.

Alan Wilder played one in his live keyboard rig throughout the music for the masses tour. Good enough for the Mode, so good enough for everyone! ✌🏻🎶🕶

I've had a DX7FD for almost two months, which I got expressly to learn how to program FM. Yes, there is so much music and sound design potential in FM that I feel people overlook it as a synthesis technique. Preaching to the choir here perhaps. I always want music and learning a synth to be a discovery process and FM does not fail there.

I once found a non-working Quadra at a pawn shop (it turned on and made some odd noises, but playing with controls didn't do what they should have) for under US$400 and wish I had the money then to buy it anyway and see about getting it working. I think it was fairly pristine cosmetically.

    I have a question.
Are these all stock DX7 sounds or does this come from that Ram4 Cartridge.
