At phase 3 he could barely stand on his own. This wasn't anywhere close to a boss fight, it was an assisted suicide.

I felt so bad during this fight, especially when he was stabbing himself just to fight the pain of the infection, and when he tried to slash at you but just fell over. ;-;
update: he was actually starting to become self-aware because your attacking weakened the radiance. Since he wasn't fully hollow, he used what little emotion and love he had from being raised by the pale king, and established that the only way he couldn't hurt you, was to kill himself. I'm crying harder
Underrated boss fight
for me , i felt like at that point the hollow knights mind is hanging on by a thread from his life of being created for the sol purpose of containing the radiance, realizing the type of man the pale king was so it leads me to believe he is snapping at that point because he uses more infected attacks which i believe hint at the radiance finally taking over and with his last bit of sentience he is possibly trying to help or either fed up with all of it and just trying to die either my god team cherry😭

Also, unrelated but fun fact the deleted Dream Nail Dialogue of Pure Vessel did realize that he needed to be fully Hollow, either to satisfy his creator or he tried to be a hero to Hallownest, but he had a mind to think, which is a a big flaw.
It'd be a lot more tragic if he indeed was trying to save Hallownest, because he was able to see everything in Hallownest, even though chained, he realized that he failed and doomed everyone.

@@favouritecigarettes That cutscene shows the young Hollow Knight following the Pale King out of The Abyss though, so the confusion should still be pretty cleared up by then.
Not that I have any problem with the confusion. The only explicit signs that you aren't the Hollow Knight are the memorial and the boss title card. Otherwise, it's all implicit.
The fact that he goes from being perfectly silent as the pure vessel to screaming out in pain as the sealed vessel is one of the saddest parts to me
The scream is the radiance’s scream.
“No voice to cry suffering” and all. At the start after you break his chains you can hear his silent “scream” similar to Pure Vessel
@@redandblue1013 the radiance has a scream in her own fight and it sounds nothing like that, and part of the quote you quoted was "no will to break", but that appears untrue, the pale king thought the hollow knight was truly a hollow being, but it very much has a will and voice

@@ishthewall1915 it's definitely the radiance's scream. all the other infected creatures/bosses have that exact same scream, and the pure vessel doesn't make a sound (unless you count the boss music, which i don't). plus, you can hear that scream in the cutscene between pure vessel and absolute radiance fight (where the two vessels are looking at each other in the void). and although the default radiance doesn't make that actual scream herself in her fight, she still makes similar sounds. and she's allowed to have multiple roars lmao it's not like she's completely insane

What really gets to me about the stabbing is that his movements feel so... vicious. It’s like he knows he’s imperfect, he knows he failed at the one thing he was supposed to do, and he’s enraged at himself and it shows in how furiously he swings at himself. Man, this game...

And the way the music changes right as he starts stabbing himself... What a tradgedy. These two siblings, destined to fight this thing no matter the cost.

That's one theory. The other would be that the radiance is trying to break the vessel to get out. Seeing on how more powerful the attacks becomes when the infection flows out of the body, I think it is more credible ^^

It wasn't because of the pain and hurt. It's because he's only attacking you because the infection tells him to, and him stabbing himself is to help you defeat him.

@Drakoneo Yep, making the boss more difficult won't solve players who tank attacks. So making them improve their skills by being cautious was a good idea.
You can still use a pure nail jonis blessing lifeblood core and unbreakable heart to do this super easy
To be fair, an attack like that should be expected to hit HARD
It’s still an incredibly easy fight, I only got hit twice my first time fighting him without trying because I knew he wasn’t the tru finale

this fight is probably the most depressing in the game for one reason, he's not really fighting you, it's The Radiance, she's controlling him into fighting you off so you won't interfere with her. He even tries helping you by trying to stab the infection at himself and he just gets weaker as the fight continues eventually reaching a point where he collapses at one swing with his sword. The Hollow Knight as a character is just so depressing because it's entire existence was to contain something it could never contain.
I just noticed that apparently he only has one arm, it's especially apparent when you look at him as opposed to pure vessel openly using both arms.

Most memorable boss fight I've ever played, and certainly the saddest if you consider the lore.
The Dancer of the Boreal Valley from DS3, and Isshin the Sword Saint from Sekiro are better.
But the thing is, I can't think of a more tragic boss fight than this one. I mean, my gosh.

This was just a sad final boss fight. Going into this ending, I expected it to be epic but it was just tragic. Can't wait to reach the other endings.

@@ogun2353 because unlike the pure vessel, our ghost doesn't use arcane magic with his arm,he uses his mask, since the pure vessel went with the pale king he learned a different style than us,in this fight his right arm is consumed with infection

When I got to fight the OG Hollow Knight, I thought he would be some fast, deadly, elite warrior. Instead you get an exhausted, broken-down fighter trying to fight the infection where it's most concentrated: inside itself. Not since Zuko and Azula has there been a more tragic sibling fight.

Nope. Hallownest is dead. The bugs there are corpses animated by infection. Seemingly the only Hallownest bug to not be infected is the Menderbug. With the infection fully consumed, the husks become what they should be; corpses.

The rising strings as you break the chains are something I'll never forget.
Man, after fighting and beating the Pure Vessel (his prime form), seeing this is kinda sad. On top of being partially controlled by the Radiance, he slowed down so much, lost half his strength and lost an arm, and he must have been there sealed away for ages too. And due to him not being truly hollow, he can feel all that pain of falling into such a sorry state
This fight reminds me heavily of Artorias the Abysswalker. A knight taken over by a plague-like force, the hunched over stance, that screech, and how both fight you with one of their arms, the other hanging limp.
Oh, and also how both make me want to cry. H e l p .

Having beaten the pure vessel, and contended with the absolute radiance, I can't help but feel bad for their original forms.
The hollow knight used to be a formidable warrior, yet the radiance enslaved it to her will, and withered it away. All the hollow knight can do is try to end his life to contain the radiance, yet she forces him to fight against his will.
The radiance is also depressing in a way, once a benevolent Goddess of light imprisoned, and left to rot in dreams, with her loyal followers abandoning her In service to the pale King. She became a shell of the great Goddess she once was, and was consumed by rage.
Of course, the only true winner in this games story is the void, As it ended up consuming both it's enemies ( radiance and pale King) and was able to find peace after being abused, exploited, and enslaved by the wills of the wyrms.
The Godmaster ending is the best ending.

@@agustron2479 I think the ones infected are still infected even after defeating Absolute Radiance. Bcuz in the ending where you give the God Seeker the flower you can see how the Infection disappears but you can see Hornet at the the temple of the black egg preparing to fight someone (probably the Hollow Knight who got out of the Black Egg)

(I'm late but for those who didn't know why the hollow knight was stabbing themself.) The radiance was controlling the hollow knight during the fight, he finally gained control of his body and stabbed himself to help you win the fight.

In between 0:00 and 0:17, If you watch closely after the 2nd chain breaks his face slowly moves to look to you. Interesting hey? But pretty creepy, though what do you expect from a creature who tried to seal the infection inside themself? Addition: Also, after that his shoulder pads seem to break off when he is released. Though I couldn't find remnants of the object. But if that's not the case, the shoulder pads are hidden somewhere not visible from the angle in the game we view as the player. Edit: I soon realized that they do break off but the remnants break when they hit the floor, so they were not visible.

He doesn't seal the infection, the Pale King sealed it within him in the temple by using the dreamers. The Hollow Knight had no choice, although he knew it was his purpose, and his desire to fill this purpose is what caused him to become an unfit vessel, giving the Radiance a mind and will to seep into and spread throughout the kingdom again. The Pale King likely told him of his purpose, and THK grew affection for the people (bugs, I guess) of Hallownest and the fact it was even capable of feeling anything caused it be impure. This is why even the player knight cannot contain the Radiance, since in order to willingly contain it, we have a will, and in the true ending, we (the player knight) consciously unite the void.

2:22 at that Point, I always begin to feel bad for Hollow Knight... his Pain must be impossible to bear. It's like he is desperate to die at this Point, stabbing himself, in order to End his hurting. He didn't deserve that....

Honestly, I find it interesting to see that (unlike the Sealed Siblings Ending), there is nothing on the Black Egg after you take the Sealed Vessel's place.
Does this mean the Dreamers were Sealed with the Sealed Vessel? If so, how did they get their bodies out? Did they have to be asleep (like Hornet, when knocked out) to become the Dreamers?
Little 「【Fury】」 It should mean that all the next hollow knight has to do is approach the black egg to open it since there are no extra seals. From what I can understand, sealed siblings ending is the worst one because hornet becomes a seal for the black egg but she's inside the black egg so you can't really uh... get her. So that ending means you've screwed everyone over. Really late comment but still! The king may have done something so 3 select people could be seals for the black egg and all spread across hallownest.
I heard that if you don't have the void heart the knight is actually hollow because he's not corrupted by any thoughts or feelings so if he takes in the plague he's is able to hold it in forever without it getting out. But by gaining the void heart he learns more about himself and in turn he is corrupted by thoughts and is no longer truly hollow so when the sealed siblings ending is got there is no one to stop the plague due to hornet being locked in with you
The Broken Exile The fact you can dream nail the Hollow Knight proves said corruption and like I said, sealed siblings is the worst possible ending as a broken vessel attempts to contain the plague. However the knight you fight against is also corrupt. The one you see has been shown to have a sort of bond with the pale king in a small cut scene at the end of the greatest punishment. This father and son bond makes him a bad vessel as well. The thing is though is that the dreamers can be reached found all over Hallownest whereas Hornet is unreachable unless she broke the seal herself somehow. Technically the worst possible ending is probably you failing to consume the light. The light is banished and breaking this sort of seal that is the Hollow Knight releases it I believe. This would put the entire kingdom back into a hivemind while the Wyrm runs off to another kingdom that he can ruin most likely. Probably not 100% accurate but who cares?!

The name of the final boss in the game (not the true final one) is "THE HOLLOW KNIGHT" and his name is the and he putted on the hollow knight profile pic so reading his name and the profile pic name will be together (THE HOLLOW KNIGHT)

When ur done consuming the infection at the end of the fight, before Hollow Knight dies, you can see a flash of the Radiance. (Play it at lowest speed at 4:51 and u will see)

Such a well made boss fight, you can see as he takes more damage the hollow knight starts to break out of the radiance’s control and tries to end himself. You can see that it simply either is too weak to or does not want to fight you and as the boss fight goes on it uses more infection attacks and almost looks like something is using it a puppet

Guztave Kateb well the hollow knight(the one before us)is actually the only vessel the pale king cared for,shown by the cutscene after the path of pain,that’s what lead him to be an imperfect vessel
@Deserve Not Desire It would not, the vessels aren't completely hollow, not even the Hollow Knight had he not been cherished by the King, it would still be imperfect. Only a Knight with a Void Heart is capable, presumably so, to contain the Infection indefinitely.

The way HK screams at the end made my blood run cold
I accidentally locked myself out of the normal ending when I got the Void Heart before facing the boss. Kind of disappointed that there is so little difference between the two endings. I guess this one is better since Hollow Knight is not alone in that egg.
You’re supposed to dream nail him when hornet pins him down. Then you get to fight the source of the infection, the radiance, and get a good ending.

The Void ending where all your Void brethren unites to take down the Radiance is cool, but the Knight's sacrifice here give me feels on a different level, one of the best ending in video games.
I just got this ending today, and really, the only thing that I can see happening is the same thing again.
A few hundreds of years later, some other hollow vessel will come along and instead of fighting the Hollow Knight, they'll fight you.
Then the cycle will repeat once again.

when the music changed and he started stabbing himself, I realized what was going on and just froze. the shivers I got... this was such an epic and tragic fight, full of emotion. I miss this game so much.

i never noticed that,in the very end, he can't even attack anymore and the infection still tries to kill you

It's not the Hollow Knight's scream, I believe. It's the Radiance screaming through it. The Hollow Knight does not have a voice in the first place just as you, the Knight do not speak.
Olivia But the Hollow Knight isn’t a pure vessel. He failed to contain the infection. He wouldn’t have a “voice to cry suffering” if he was pure like our Knight.
@@Bananachick The Hollow Knight doesn't have a voice as shown in the battle against the Pure Vessel which is just him in his most powerful state. And our Knight isn't pure either. The Pale King mentioned that a pure vessel must have ''No will to break" and the voidheart mentions that it unifies the Void under our will mentioning that we do have a will, and that will is to defeat the Radiance.
@@janbedyk9550 he has no voice while he is pure, but since he is flawed, which is basically the whole reason we fight him in the first place, he does have a voice.

As the fight progress you will notice the air becomes more infected because we are causing damage to the hollow knight and making more infection leak out.
That moment when the music changes and you see the knight start killing himself, ill never forget and it never fails to make me feel.

In his brief moments when his mind is free of the infection, he tries to help you win by stabbing himself. He wants you to kill him. This battle hits different.
the fact that he literally stabs himself trying to kill the infected parts inside of him with the little control of the body he still has left, trying to end the fight, shows how much he just wants the fight to end as fast as possible, as he is sick of the pain of being infected
This ending is just a cycle, your protagonist is a vessel like HK but, he also has emotions, feels, a mind to decide.
If it wasnt.... Why he wouldnt be bothered to save people?
Why he has to listen every bug he encounters?
Why he can decide even climb up and save himself.
Why he would be sitting, just enjoying company of other friends.
Why do all of this things if our protagonist is... Hollow?
Its a simple answer.
He isn't
This game is 90% soundtrack. This just goes to show how important sound design is.
If you notice on PHASE 2 (Which is the phase where he stabs himself)
He is crying the infection while stabing himself, which means he is desperate to end this madness...

I like to think of this as a repeating cycle. A hollow knight is born, at a bad stage in the kingdom, the hollow knight journeys through and kills the other hollow knight and delays the infection but becomes the one thing he wanted to get rid of
Close. There aren't any more vessels being made after The Hollow Knight was found. The Pale King took them for training, then locked them away inside the egg. As the player, you play as one of the last remaining vessels, and probably the only one strong enough to take the Hollow Knight's place. After that, if the infection gets out, the rest of Hallownest is doomed

Also close. You can see the infection being consumed by void in the knights eyes. Confirming you are completely hollow and the infection is held in it’s entirety with no chance of escaping until something happens to the knight. (Which nothing will happen since the door is sealed and you are the last vessel)
Idk if this is a easter egg or not but look real close when the hollow knight drop from the chains and yells he missing one arm
In the end, The Hollow Knight was not screaming out a war cry, it was cries of pain. So much pain and it just wants to stop but is forced to keep fighting against its will.

I love the way the music changes when the hollow knight starts to take back control. It changes to be so melancholly and I alwasys felt so bad for him
It's sad because in the game it says that he had to hide all his emotion to prove he was hollow, and how much the infection hurt him😞
At the start of the video look at the hollow knights face he looks at you it just makes me really sad that he was locked up in chains *while still conscious* to just be left there

This is the best boss fight. Yes, i mean better than nightmare king grimm, sisters of battle and pure vessel. Everything is leading up to it and you expect some hard boss fight, but it's not even that hard, it's just... Sad. The atmosphere and tragedy in the bossfight makes it so darn good. My favorite boss in any game ever honestly. I shed a tear when playing it for the first time. Poor hollow knight

I just noticed that the room is getting filled with radiance vapor everytime the Hollow knight stabs himself.
It actually disturbs me of how you can hear the radiance when the infection got absorbed
I know this fight is supposed to be sad, but all I can think about is how cool the knight actually looks and how cools the fight feels.
This fight got me crying at the end First time I beat it. It’s so sad seeing the hollow knight in so much agony, struggling to walk. Even more horrific are his attempts at suicide. I just felt absolutely devastated watching him attempt to put himself out of his misery. Truly one of the most saddening endings to any game. Congratulations Team Cherry 👏
