So Lackadaisy was once a prestigious, well-known speakeasy in St. Louis, but after its founder died, it fell on hard times and has all but disappeared since his former partner tried to run it on her own.
Freckle, Rocky, and Ivy are running transport for Lackadaisy through an old transporter, the local Funeral Home, who fills caskets with booze imported from elsewhere and has it buried, then puts out an obituary with code words to tell the speakeasy which grave to dig up to get their booze (obviously, for a price).
Nicodeme, Serafine, and Mordecai are runners for a competing speakeasy that has taken over since Lackadaisy's fall; they were there to scare off the competition and make sure nobody else is trying to run booze in their town. If they could get the alcohol that's a bonus, but their main goal was killing the Lackadaisy runners as a message.
The funeral home is just one of many ways to smuggle booze into the city, and they used to supply for Lackadaisy, but stopped doing so at some point. This was their first time doing business with them again, hence why Mordecai said they were 'double dealing'; supplying to multiple different speakeasies in the city.
All of this is in the episode, but it's all said super casually and off-handed because the characters already know the situation, which is the best way to do worldbuilding, but it can make it tough to pick up on a first watch unless you're already zeroed in on the setting and premise.
The reason why Viktor is so tense right here (25:58) is cuz he and Ivy have like a Daddy/daughter relationship going on and he doesn’t like when Ivy tries to date boys 😂
Thought he was more of an Uncle ?
@Sweet Cherry eh, whatever label you wanna give for "surrogate father figure for Ivy cause her parents are absent"
As a violinist myself I gotta say, the fact that Rocky was able to play effortlessly even with only three strings tells that he's one heck of a violinist.
You'll notice that they had their fight in the Sable Quarry and around 25:45, Rocky says "Mr. Sable". A clever clue to who owned the Quarry lol
Then no wonder he was talking about the explosives and machinery so much lol
Rocky has a noticeable distaste for Wick Sable because… well… SPOILERS…
Mordecai was aiming for people's heads, not the engine. Only reason he missed the first time was because Rocky jerked the car off the road (instead he hit the driver's mirror). Second time he was aiming for Miss Pepper's head and didn't take the shot. Like his comrades said "you going to get sentimental?".
If that first shot connected this would've been a completely different animation 😱
I really like that scene, you can see Rocky recognize him in the mirror
To answer a few questions. Rocky is about 25-ish, Ivy and Freckle are both 18. That tiny pistol is a Deringer. It was a tiny pistol designed to be hidden in a coat pocket. And Rocky wasn’t drunk, he is just unhinged all the time.
I thought ivy was at least 14 to 17
@@skybittle9713 No, according to her official character sheet on the lackadaisy website, she is 18.
Rocky is 23 as far as I know
To be fair Rocky was always unhinged but he definitely became more unhinged after a certain head injury. The events of this pilot lead me to believe that it comes after said injury.
@@galerios1 Probably. Mitzi does say they got the funeral home back as a supplier

Fun Fact: Cats get the zoomies just like dogs, making them more chaotic, excited, kind of violent. Basically there predator skills are activated, unlike dogs who just act goofy.
edit: sorry for me being a nerd
Oh nah you're good my two cats get like that not so much as violent but wild for sure...thank God for laser pointers
@@ReggieWolf Once upon a time I got my cat to chase his tail with a laser pointer. I miss him.
When Ms. M said "Done in by a scarf" she's referring to a real-life event that happened in Nice, France on September 14th, 1927 when Dancer Isabora Duncan's silk scarf was tangled in the rear headcaps of her car.
That's a good reference helps establish the era
Fun fact about those lines you mentioned at the end: It's actually a callback to a style of animation called Xerox animation! That was back when traditional inkers and painters were replaced with coloring machines, which allowed the animator's lines to show through. Some famous movies that were made during this time are 101 Dalmatians and Disney's Robin Hood.
Hmmm see 101 was one of my favorites growing up I gotta go back and watch to see if I can see similarities
@@ReggieWolf It's a distinctive and cool style :) You'll immediately recognize it!
13:48 Ok so small explanation on that whole scene where Rocky (The grey cat with blue eyes) is by your words "hallucinating"....
Actually He's not drunk- That's just his personality- similar to how his cousin (the orange one) is obsessed with guns and shooting.....
Rocky here is a pyromaniac- meaning whenever he sees dynamite or fireworks or Fire or anything destructive in general.... He goes mad 😂 its a literal carnival for him
Ooooh so its just in their blood, they could cause some real mayhem...i hope for it
@@ReggieWolf yup they're always bound to cause chaos 😂
That's what I love most about Rocky, his obsession with explosives
@@scalesthebattlemage4634 i know-
when I first saw him in the comic I was like, "he's just like me fr" 😂
Didn't the author say it's just reflecting her experience of owning cats, that they all have their crazy side and are just better or worse at hiding it?
I’ve been following the comic for this for years and it’s so nice to see the pilot done
It's crazy that I'm just finding out I hope this story goes far
@@ReggieWolf i deadass found the pilot from this reaction... now im following this all the way through
@@ReggieWolf you know tommy but not bar, also 10/10 on this review
Has anybody EVER explained why Sable locked his electricity box from the INSIDE? It's the only bit in this masterpiece that makes no sense!
@@kimmccarthy7747My guess is that there was another smaller door meant to be used for people to access the building, and the ones Rocky went in were for big equipment, maybe not meant to be locked for security but just latched to keep them closed, idk. I didn't notice this before, and I've seen this thing 20 times haha. Good eye! :)
“It's a great advantage not to drink among hard-drinking people.”
- F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, 1925
It is an advantage, until you end up carrying them...
It's also the most fun you could have at a party full of drinking because you and you alone get to remember _every embarrassing stupid drunken antic that happened that night, in vivid detail,_ and you get to hold that over their heads smugly for as long as you like :P
"Did I embarass myself last night?"
"Oooooh, yeah. Big time."
"How?!"
"(Smug silence only)"
"How, what'd I do?!"
"(Even smugger, more silent silence.)"
You don't have to repeat this saying in every single review, you know.
“What are you on, bruh?”
I mean…cocaine was in practically everything back then. And given that Rocky is practically a textbook case of extreme hyperactive-impulsive ADHD at a time when there was no treatment or support for it, and how often undiagnosed ADHD people rely on drugs to keep their symptoms under control as best they can…
Yeah, wouldn’t surprise me if Rocky dabbled in something other than alcohol now and then…
Very true when I found out it was in Coca-Cola it blew my mind
@@ReggieWolf “Back in my day…”
“Back in your day, soda had cocaine in it! Stop holding us to that standard, holy shit!”
@@ReggieWolf It should be Cocaine-a-Cola.
Also if you were wondering why the crane thing was moving on it’s own without anyone driving it it’s because heavy machinery is normally driven using levers instead of a wheel like cars. And level don’t go back on their own so you can just pull one and let it continue on its way. Also why didn’t he see it was on a crash course with the water tower?
@@charliezarddacool909 Someone on TV Tropes said Rocky braced the main controls somehow so they’d stick in one position, which is probably why they made a point of focusing on them during that scene. But it’s dark enough that I haven’t been able to really see how it was done.
Fun fact: Rocky Freckle and Ivy are all based on the original creator's real life cats!
That's dope if I every create something I'm doing the same
I've been following this comic since the DeviantArt days at around 2008 or so. To see it get a full animated episode is like watching things come full circle. Thanks for reacting and I hope this series keeps getting the love and support it deserves.
As long as they keep making episodes I'll keep watching I love how original this is
23:42 Canonically Rocky is 23 being born in 1904. While Ivy and Calvin (Freckle) are both 18 being born in 1909.
He was born in December, so he is 22
This series legit got to me while I am going through an obsession with cats, and now I'm obsessing over cats in the 20s-Early 30s era
Oh, and Mordecai (the black cat) has chronic OCD, which isn’t why we hear ticking when we get his POV, and why Mr. Sweet says “what, did they muss your hair?” because that would really bother him.
Seems every has their own little things...interesting
You should totally read the comic! The art is just gorgeous!
Ill check it out I just don't want any spoilers
@@ReggieWolf x2
@@ReggieWolf the pilot seems to take place after where the comic left off, so there shouldn't be any spoilers
@@tiagoprado7001 Nah this is more like an alternative beginning
And THANK YOU for catching how Rocky had Joker vibes.
oh yea its a cool homage but freckles got a little something in him too
@@ReggieWolf Freckles is the Riddler. lol
No, he's just a theatre kid. Literally everything about him, including the violent tendencies, screams theatre kid
@@afoolishfopdoodle3284 lol So you are saying theater makes people violent? Cool!
@@corvus2327 I mean if that's how you take that statement then sure lol
Mordecai didn't shoot out their engine. He nearly hit Rocky's head, but the car swerved, so he hit the mirror. The damage to the engine was from Sophie's BAR.
Edit: the main 3 aren't kids, but they're barely adults. So while they're above 18, they are still the kittens of the gang.
Fun fact: Mordecai, the black cat guy, is voiced by Sungwon Cho, aka ProZD, if you know who that is
And Michael Kovach (Angel Dust) plays Rocky.
@@dj-um7el Really?
@@sophialima7504 yeah.
@@dj-um7el yoo what???
@@lawrencfgsdfg it's true, check the credits or look up the cast
18:26 fun little comic fact (I don’t know if someone told you this already!) but Mordecai didn’t shoot Ivy Rocky & Freckle because he used to work for Ms. M - more specifically her deceased husband, Atlas May! He worked alongside the bartender, Viktor - i really recommend reading the comic! Seriously, it’s awesome!
Let’s just say you’d think Rocky came straight out of Wonderland… the darker side of Wonderland.
i could see him being siblings with the cheshire cat
Viktor and Mordecai used to work together, and Ivy is like a daughter to Viktor. That’s probably why Mordecai didn’t shoot her
iirc, rocky is early 20s, ivy is 18, and freckle is 18/19ish
ok so at this time period, i wouldnt think drinking would be that weird for them
@ReggieWolf Viktor, the guy who was angry at ivy for drinking, is very protective of her and is NOT happy that she went out bootlegging. You can read more in the comic
Freckles and Rocky were both born in 1904 and the story takes place in 1927, so they're both 23. Ivy was born in 1909, so she's 18 yeah.
Both Freckle and Ivy are 18, Rocky is 22
The thing about Nico, his sister and Mordacai is that early during the Prohibition era, everybody got along okay. But the longer it lasted, the more conflict came along as sources of alcohol became scarce. It wasn't just the cops after you, it was also your competition for supplies.
I think the thing I laughed about the most was the jokes about how bad the taste was, once Rocky, Freckle & Ivy got the bottles to the bar - my grandma told me about that when I was a kid in the 1960s. She said that bootleg stuff was nasty.
No, he's crazy. He's called Rocky for a reason.
18:29 Mordecai has a form of Myopia and sometimes he sees double vision and blurry as an impressionist painting up close.
26:03 Viktor is a Veteran of the First World War.
I'm not a native English speaker... But I have never had so much problems with understanding what's going on as I had while watching this animation. I guess it's just because authors really wanted to replicate English from that time.
But overall, the animation is really expressive. I really start to understand character's personalities by watching even how they act. And scenes are well done too, bringing the right emotions and tension.
I can't blame you. My english is very decent. I still don't understand fancy words and meaning of the first ballad that Rocky does in the intro. Also gangsta siblings have such thick French accents I can understand only Begining and End of sentences and usually I don't have problems with accents.
I watched it with subtitles and still had trouble understanding occasionally. Still love that they use time period accurate language, it really adds a lot of historical feeling to the show!
Btw Ivy is college aged (21+) & Freckle is the same age as Rocky, he just has "baby face" and is a cinnamon roll X-3
It's just Victor sees Ivy as his Niece and is very protective of her
But Ivy and Freckle are 18 and Rocky is 22
Bro I watched this pilot and then binge read the comic in 1 day…love this so much
Same
Do you have a cat? lol I kept hearing meowing and it wasn't coming from the show. Bruh your cat knows you are watching a cartoon with cats.
Yea i have too and they really do tho 😂they did the same thing with lion king
It was confusing my cats, too. One of them is on my lap and keeps giving me this weird look with his ears back when the other cat makes noise in the background.
Something people fail to remember when it comes to guns... It's not the size that counts, it's how you use it. A bullet in the head is still a bullet in the head. Whether it's a 22. or a 50. it will kill someone. Deringer's were pretty infamous. They only held 2 low caliber bullets (usually 32. or 22. But they were used by gamblers to great effect in the 1800's through the early 1900's. The gamblers who got shot after being caught cheating, usually got shot by a Deringer.
I think the three who was after Rocky Freckle and Ivy are competitors but I don’t know I never read the comic or heard of it but I’m excited for what the make next
Yea I can't wait to see what this becomes I know it'll be a fun little ride
16:50 She called him "cher," not "sheriff." The lead two in the antagonist squad would refer to themselves as either "Cajun" or "Creole,"* but in any case they're using a certain amount of Louisiana French (a dialect of French) or Louisiana Creole (a creole of Louisiana French and English). (Mordecai is, as his name implies, Jewish.)
*The use of those terms has a lot of historical baggage around race and class, and I don't recall what they use in the comic, so I won't speak for them.
Thanks for watching this video!
This does have potential as Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss.
I like this point in history, which I speculate that Prohibition and this taking place in Mississippi. It where people who do illegal things can make or break someone future. President Kennedy father or grandfather was a making money off Prohibition, while Crime Families establish territory/fortunes that were easily billionaires by our calculations of today standards...even if they are called millionaires.
Not to mention Political figures at speak-easies/hidden bars/clubs. We got local politician at Mayor or Congress level, then antagonist is either a Senator or Governor of Mississippi.
It does give off the Boom-Boom Room. That what I remember in Life with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence staring in one my favorite movies.
The main trio are teenagers, but it depends on the Era that was transition from Kids to Adulthood. No pre-teens or teenagers, just what who view them as Kids and who views them as Adults. Those who shoot guns, whisky-run and drive cars would be consider a adult without so much as barely making pass the 4th grade or never having school education at all.
Ayo bro idk if I've said it before but you are smart AF and informative I be reading your comments learning all the time it seems like prohibition did more damage than good
@@ReggieWolf Prohibition did do more damage given that the parties involved were a bit religious and wanted to stop Drunks/Alcoholics corrupting families or communities.
It just crazy how Prohibition created Criminal Empire that lasted close to century in recent times and even had President family history of their wealth linked to bootlegging.
Still, this pilot good and with your reactions it helps spread back to creators and hopefully their might be series on it.
If we had to change the title of Lackofdaisy, what would you call this series given the account has the the same title?
I am thinking the Southern Violencd and Clubbng or Ballad of Whiskey Drinking and Dreams.
Probably bad title ideas. I got too much free time on my hands.
This takes place in Missouri, not Mississippi. The Mississippi river does follow one of Missouri's borders.
25:40 that was his dynamite and machinery. The place had his name. He's Mr. Sable.
12:16 That Maniacal Behavior Should Have Put Rocky In Lockdown. 😱
17:53 The cat is Mordecai Heller. He used to work for Lackadaisy until his boss and friend Atlas May died. He only defected to Mr. Sweet's side to see if he was responsible for May's death.
What a cute little story. Can't wait for more!
SungWon Cho, the voice actor for Mordecai, AKA ProZD
And there's even a few movies on ProZD's channel of him voicing some of the comics.
It's One of the Best Furry webcomics I grew up with. Rocky, Freckles, and Ivy deal/ smuggle alcohol( Rocky and Freckle are Cousins that are psychos/ maniacs)
Mordecai is the Uptiet assassination
The Savory twins Nico and Sarafine are Voodo twins assassin/killers. They also marked/sold Mordacai’s soul.
Rocky and freckles seem like they gonna have some wild moments and the savoy twins are both creep and dope also poor Mordecai
@@ReggieWolf typo: I mean to say the Black uptight Assasin Cat lol but yeah the twins are VERY creepy XD

Hey, got shown your reaction after watching this earlier, I'm a big fan of Lackadaisy and Iron Circus in general, and I like your takes, best of luck to you!
I finally found someone who loves the cats with the cajun accents just like me. They honestly stole this whole pilot at least in my opinion😂
Tracy Butler is a god and lackadaisy is an utter gem
Both are facts
18:25: People speculate that it's because he knows them.
I can see that cause if I was him someone ending up in a body bag
If you read the comic you'd know why
11:30 ; Dunno if you double checked later, but that one shot was aimed at Rocky's head.
Because of that last second swerve, Mordecai hit the left side-mirror of the car instead.
He was going for the kill

Thankfully the pilot gives the link to the webcomic in the description.
17:22 same. And I Love It!
Considering this takes place roughly 1927 and features the Thompson Submachine gun aka "The Chicago Typewriter", i'd be remissed if it were anything but a Colt M1911. Glad to know I'm not the only one of my generation with a respect and fondness for such a classic firearm.
Tracy does her research.
Glad to see someone else also felt like Kovach was auditioning to replace Mark Hamill.
7:17. These guys aren't bootleggers, they're rum-runners.
18:27 as serafine said. He's getting sentimental about the old time. He used to work with them at lackadaisy.
31:10 Yup, feels like I'm watching this on Netflix or something.🤯🏆 It's giving me vibes of Hella Boss (Never saw it but know the style/gritty & dark), Cuphead, Beastars, & Aggretsuko but their own unique style and design. It's nice or purrfect.😎👍👏😸
I also like A Fox in Space, Star Fox fan/series that we really need & has this retro 70s cartoon like Space Coast to Coast but looks really good. 😎👍👏
After watching helluva boss you are right
Yea I'm gonna check that out next
11:15
he only hit the side mirror

pretty sure seat belts weren't invented at that time so it's a miracle they survived that crash

You should check out the channel other cool content! They got fandubs and streams and everything dealing with Lackadaisy by the creator and crew behind it all. The webcomic goes more into details and it's just a great comic and story that's still ongoing. 😊
Yea I'm definitely doing more research on this show cause it just popped up out of nowhere for me but I'm hooked
The comic is great you should read it!
Yea I have it pulled up on my pc
I'd think rocky has ADHD as for his behavior but since no one was diagnosed with ADHD in the 1920's I'd say he is just fascinated by danger and explosives. But he definetly has some of the behavioral symptoms of ADHD 👍🏼

It is what you think it is, I'm pretty sure the creator of this and the comic its based on confirmed that the gun Mordecai uses is a 1911
(EDIT: Yup, looked it up, also jfc that was back in 2010, forgot how much of a long runner lackadaisy is)
Mordecai is becoming my favorite character the more comments I read
Tracy does her research. And if things are different, she usually says so in the description. One thing that I can think of off the top of my head is that Wick's check-book isn't depicted accurately, mainly because people wouldn't recognize a check-book from the 1930s (they were more like check _books_ than the leaflets we have now).
