Lackadaisy is a great youtube furry animation online. It is an amazing pilot so we decided to react to it in a reaction commentary format on Spilling The Milk. LACKADAISY (Pilot) LACKADAISY, based on a comic series by Tracy J. Butler, was directed by Fable Siegel, produced by Iron Circus Animation.

Fun fact: Very notably, ProZD actually first became known on the internet as the person who voiced Mordecai in Lackadaisy fandubs, and now here he is voicing Mordecai in the official release!
The first thing I saw of his personally was his "a villain who unintentionally always does helpful things" video but I had no idea he even voiced in this until it was mentioned in this video!
It would be very funny if cucumber quest got a animated series with Prozd voicing Nightmare Knight

Controversial opinion: we don’t need to compare this to another indie project, just let this be its own thing without attaching or comparing it to other projects. It deserves all of the attention and hype it’s getting, I can’t wait to see what they put out in the future

yeah! i think a lot of people tend to compare it to Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss because there aren't many other well-known episode-length indie projects on youtube, so people tend to compare them, despite Lackadaisy really shining as its own unique animation

Lackadaisy actually started as webcomic from 2006 and it's still being worked on, so to see this series animated is pretty cool.

Am I the only one that didn't like it? It feels that way. I genuinely tried to watch it twice but couldn't finish it. The animations is amazing, but the writing and dialogue aren't as good as I hoped it would be from the hype.
I've been reading Lackadaisy since 2015 and I am so excited to see it animated! It deserves all of the attention it's getting and more!

@@erikbihari3625 oh it really is! right down to the locations and the background of people, specifically the French/Creole-speaking cajun siblings. so many nice details with them and they nailed it perfectly. there are even a few characters that noticeably served in WW1 or The Great War. and they do talk about their experiences and how it physically affected them or influenced their lives.
@@reyfrescoo."The great war"? And here I thought Wars are well documented. How about the casting? Because honestly I was a bit taken a back hearing Malcoml, not just because he did a servicable job, but the accent!
The animation sketch lines are actually so lovely to see because you lose a lot of character and style in cleaning up the animation. It’s a nice reminder that this was hand drawn.

@@NEEDbacon I don’t think so. I mean a completely cleaned up product can look good, absolutely. But there’s definitely character to that roughened up style, and it feels less flat in a way. I guess it’s really a preference but it’s nice to have that reminder that this was made by hand, and not with character rigs. If you look at older 2D Disney movies you can actually see it

You mean, physical paper? It'd be really nice detail if turns out to be cheap like classic pulp comics!
@@erikbihari3625 I don't know if it would work on cheap paper, the art is super detailed unlike actual old pulp comics with limited color palletes and stuff like that, so it wouldn't really make much sense to print it like old comics when it already doesn't look vintage, but they could probably still make it look fancy and appropriately esthetic.

One of the best indie animation I've ever see.. we def needs more, even in the cinema world! It’s so nice to see animation that’s for adults without being crass. The story and characters have a level of maturity that we never see in mainstream "adult" animated series.
Definitely the sketchy linework and fluid movement are also really well done!
While also still remembering how to have fun. Its a hard line to draw but honestly lackadaisy does it pretty well

@@erikbihari3625 oh yeah! Lackadaisy is one of the most well-researched pieces of historical fiction i've ever seen! the attention to detail in the webcomic is truly incredible
8:45 though the Pilot is based off the event of the comic, the Pilot is largely separate from the comics. All the dialogue in the Pilot was created for use in. The Pilot, and was not a comic first. I think the word choice here is mostly to help build characters. Zib is a performer, he literally gets paid to use fancy wording. Over all this is one of my favorite reaction videos, really entertaining guys!

Personally I think what ivy was referring to when she said "playtime" was less of a furry thing and more of a cat owner thing. She might be referring to the phenomenon primarily found in cats called "zoomies"
Or just referencing how they gotta hurry not to be noticed. It's not like rocky was subtle!

At one point rocky had his forehead split open and stitched back up, it was said that he could experience sudden mood-change as a sideefect curtesy of his injury. While not seen in the commic so far i do believe that he had a mood-change like this here.

The lines were added after they were done. Yeah. They finished, then they readded the reference lines for a more raw feel. They gave themselves more work to make it look like less.

In case ya'll dudes didn't know before. Lackadaisy was originally a webcomic series which has been around since the mid-2000s like 06. The comic itself by Tracy Butler is full of historical researched accuracy on the 20s and prohibition era also her artwork is damned amazing too! This is full of awesome characters with many layers to them as well many other cool bits on this IP about crimebreaking anthro cats.
It’s been years since I read the comic and I never got around to finishing it. I’m super impressed with how well the comic translated into animation. Everyone who worked on it did a spectacular job.
I'm still flabbergasted they got Malcoml Ray of channel awesome infamy involved, and have him deliver a mostly descent performance! It'd be like turning Neil Breen to Steven Spielberg!

Also don't worry about not finishing the comic, it kinda got put on hold for this pilot. It's kinda in the middle of season 2.

Fun fact: the gun in the violin case was/is a real thing. It was made for the Thompson submachine gun, the Tommy Gun, which is what was used in the pilot.

The word just refers to anyone with an interest in anthropomorphic animals and related things, the same way one may be interested in the subject of chemistry or in composing music, nothing more general nor specific (in case you are basing your opinions upon certain sources featuring a minority in this community), and there is nothing inherently negative about this.
I started reading this comic ever since 8th grade and I'm a college student now. You don't know how surprised I am when it finally got a pilot.

Freckle is Rocky's cousin and goes berserk when subjected to violence and handed a weapon.
Mordecai didn't shoot Ivy because he used to work for the same people they are and he got sentimental. He's now working for the opposition and is possibly magically tied to the Cajun siblings he was riding with. While he won't hesitate to murder someone if it serves a purpose, he's not nearly as willing to engage in bloodshed for the fun of it as they are.
Rocky fancies himself a poet, which is why he talks like he does.
Meanwhile, Zib, the band's leader, tends to have a surprisingly broad vocabulary and somehow manages to be seemingly 24/7 drunk despite almost no access to liquor. He's very rarely upright unless he's being propped up by something. Or someone.
funny you mention warrior cats because the director specifically looked for warrior cats MAP animators. Quite a few of my favorites helped animate this. Meow286, Finchwing, Alexharrier, Segamastergirl are some examples.
This fan animation knows how to "Swing Their Sinners" cause we're on the "Wild Side" of this!. Better hurry before their "Other Friends" can "Roll The Dice!"

@@erikbihari3625 Yeah! Like, you kind of don’t expect these cartoony cat people to get hurt or possibly killed, especially with how zany and reckless Rocky is lol. It makes it so much better when it establishes how cartoony but serious it can be and how actually dangerous the antagonists are.
@@Wolfnado. There are however limits, and once you go past it, things gonna be unbearable. Puss in boots the last wish for example uses course words to show perrito isn't naieve and still beeped showing he has tact, and Antonio Banderas cat's blood is to show vulnerability!
Saw this day of release, and it was absolutely incredible.
I went in not expecting much, and came out amazed.
I couldn't get past the constant add assault and had to see it in chrome!😢
If we really want to compare this pilot to Hazbin Hotel, I'd say Lackadaisy has better pacing and design while HH had stronger character introductions. Though HH was rushed I think it was better at telling us what each character's Deal was. Lackadaisy has years of comics to sell production companies on the characters and concept while HH really only has the pilot. They are coming from very different places and I think that should be acknowledged.
Right? I feel like I knew way more about the characters after watching the hh pilot. These characters are more mysterious, but it's enough to get me to check out the comic.

Atlas is her Godfather. He’s obviously not the most sentimental but he doesn’t want to kill the little girl he knew before she was knee high. She reminds him of his own little sister. Rocky and Freckle however, he’d blow their brains out.

Tbh, the only thing that is furry about this pilot is the character designs, and even then it's kind of like Disney's type of anthro. You could 100% replace the characters with human versions and nothing would change story and action wise. I only remember hearing a faint cat noise towards the end once.

A fun fact for the warrior cats reference, some of the animators who helped make the pilot are actually from the warriors fandom and have been making warrior animatics for years. So they have a lot of practice with drawing cats lol.

Here’s a bit of info, Ivy and Freckle(Calvin is his actual name) are actually dating in the series. Ivy just saw him and decided he’s her’s now, and he kinda just goes a long with it, so it’s not as much shipping as them being a couple. Also Freckle and Rocky are cousins so there’s no shipping there. And this whole episode isn’t part of the comics it’s a non-canon adventure I’m pretty sure

yeah. the voice actors for Rocky, Ivy, and Mordecai are absolutely stellar. Freckle is ehhh, IDK. I think Serafine's voice actor is good, she just needs a better mic, and I don't really like Mitzi's voice. Everyone else is fine.
