The Truth Behind the Mermaid Myth

  • Do mermaids really exist? How do these half-human half-fish mythical sea creatures look? Does Aquaman live among mermaids?
Anyway, one of the interesting things about legends is that entirely different parts of the world describe seeing the exact same thing for centuries! Believe it or not, scientists and historians have been interested in the mermaid’s existence for years.

    SUMMARY:
    - The first mermaid, according to legends, is Atargatis, the ancient Syrian goddess of the sea. She didn’t start out as a mermaid, though.
    - Like most legends, that of the mermaid spans across cultures. In Japanese folklore, there’s the Ningyo, which is a giant fish with a human face and a monkey’s mouth.
    - In Russia, they have the Rusalka, a water nymph in Slavic mythology that’s been portrayed as both good and evil.
    - In Norway and parts of Scotland, they have the Finfolk, who were shape-shifters of the sea. They have an affinity for silver and tend to make humans their slaves.
    - The hype continues even today. Unconfirmed (and probably false) sightings have been reported all over the world in the past years.
    - One thing’s for sure, no one has actually seen, met, or caught a real mermaid, alive or not. Even Christopher Columbus’s mermaid sighting in 1493 was debunked by experts.
    - From afar, manatees are about the size of a human, their front flippers could resemble an arm from a distance, and their neck vertebrae allow them to turn their heads around like we do.
    - The human part of the mermaid wouldn’t be able to withstand a life in cold oceanic waters. That is, not unless mermaids have a thick layer of hair like sea otters or blubber like other marine mammals.

For decades, I owned commercial fishing vessels that fished the Gulf of Mexico. Between the 1980s-90s, I had two different reports from highly disturbed crew who caught 'something' they could not explain, were horrified at, and threw off the deck asap in fright--hoping not to get savagely bitten. Every one said the two large creatures were not fish/not human. btw, commercial fishermen are serious and not easily frightened. They reported the creatures were not beautiful.

There's a CZcams post somewhere here that consists of the submitted story of a teenage paraplegic, who says in his letter that he was staying with his uncle and family on the Oregon coast one summer. During their stay he reported enjoying wheelchair access to a fishing dock. To keep this story short he tells in detail about being assaulted by a creature that swam up to the dock and hoisted itself up, which was a large female upper body, yet monstrous in appearance and scale-less fish bodied in the lower half. He said it beat and pummeled him viciously until it was chased off by his uncle.
I have no idea if the guy was telling the truth in his letter to a CZcams channel, but as a longtime Oregon resident it was very interesting to listen to.

But then again, the 95% is the part in which humans haven't gone, often because we aren't able to (deep parts of the water) so if mermaids are a cross between human and fish then they would obviously haveto breath oxygen and therefore, if mermaids do exist we would have found them already. Alternatively, they live in the deepest parts of the ocean, and therefore there's no point debating since no one here will live to see if mermaids do exist or not.

not exactly though, the possibility is high that there are plenty of undiscovered sea creatures, but not necessarily mermaids, however the likelyhood is risen by the fact of myths from all around the world all throughout history, although that could also be because humans like mixing things, like centaurs, pegasus, griffon, hippocampi, sphinx, et cetera, and also the likely hood is risen once again by the fact that they would be formidable foes, amazing swimmers like fish or sharks, but also have arms to grab things unlike almost all ocean creatures, i kinda argued both sides on this comment

Ofc it's possible. Although they would probably be more like in the show Siren (minus the transforming to human when leaving the water part): a lot more predatory and less human looking than most shows and films like to portray them. because if they do exists they have to eat and defend themselves against other predators like sharks. there is no way that 'humans with a tail' would be able to survive in the ocean.

They are part human themselves, so they must know we exist. Also they have seen us seeing them, through the centuries, so they must have passed down thier knowledge through the mermaid generations. They probably tell the little mermaids, to be very aware of us. Don't get too close, stay away from the fishing nets. Danger!!!!!

Some theories I've heard are that at one point in time, Humans were faced with two options of surviving, one was to enter the sea and live near and around the sea somewhere, the other was to keep traveling a long distance to the nearest habitable spot.
Mermaids were the Humans from long ago who had decided to split from the group and enter the sea.
And given how long ago this would have been, it is entirely possible that the Mermaid's Human part has adapted to the pressures and temperatures of the sea and are now living under the sea rather than above and next to it.
Regardless of whether that theory turns out to be true or not, I'll still choose to believe in Mermaids, simply given the fact that we have explored Space significantly more so than what we have of our own planet's ocean, and we haven't even managed to reach the deepest parts of our ocean yet, much less managed to chart a significant list of all the ocean's species, whether they be fish, mammals, or something else.

Wow thanks for the idea, I've thought about it I will train to hold my breath for hours and wear fish skin and swim in the ocean all free with other sharks and piranhas
I will also figure out how to not lose consciousness under the sea in case I stayed for more than 7 hours
So if u wonder what I mean is you're going to actually die if you stay longer than 7-8 hours in the sea, you will start hallucinating if you stay for nearly 7-8 hours, if you survived for 10 hours at max, call it a miracle

We can do sea diving or travel space but we can't Change our habitat to totally another nature, scientists claimed that we could live in the moon but in condition of ongoing providence of oxygen and food and a tough and strong house building but of course this idea is rarely supported
But never heard of human thinking of living in sea with their bare bodies

I was told my real mother was a mermaid from the ocean and just before my father died he told me my mother has never stopped watching over me, he always said that the race of mermaids have been watching us for thousands of years and have advanced technologies that they can see everything that goes on here on earth on the land (which I found hilarious and obviously unbelievable)) he told me my mother has watched me grow up and she is always there even tho I can't see her he said she wished she could meet me but it's not possible as she said it could effect me knowing my real mother is not from my world but from a world that's underneath the sea bed hundreds of feet down below the bottom of the sea floor, he told me these things just before he died but I know now it was just the medications he was on as they were strong pain killers making him imagine things but he believed it as he told me how they met I must admit it sounded incredible and credible at the same time, but I just know it's impossible to be true no matter how much to it sounded true as he told me over the last few months he was alive he even said he knew he was going to meet with her as she had told him so ....that's crazy ehh !!! Yeah I think so too 😄

Siren and mermaid's are different creature
Mermaids are half human half fish they use their " beauty" to attract men
Sirens are half human half bird (Greek mythology) they use their " voice" to lure men to their doom
Mermaids have extreme "beauty" but they don't have that much voice like what siren's have while siren's have extremely great "voice" but they don't have that much beauty like what mermaids have. Thank you ( sorry for my bad grammar English is my second language )
