the "opera" part of avantasia is the fact that everything is written like a play, with characters and all. They abandoned a bit of that over the years, their first 2 albums were much more opera-like beyond just the lyrics, so if you want to hear that, I'd recommend "The seven angels". Jørn Lande is an absolute treasure. He has an album of Dio covers that he released in 2010, beautiful tribute and the only person that I believe has ever lived up to the task.
I'd also like to take the time to show appreciation for Sascha Paeth (the dude in the camo pants) because without him and Miro (the keyboardist here) we may not have had many of the newer wave of power metal names that we do - from the beginning they believed in and have produced/been extremely involved in lots of albums for many bands like Angra, Kamelot, Epica, Rhapsody, After Forever etc over the years, being credited by those bands as being one of the big reasons they have succeeded. I'd say they're some of the most influential people in the genre, and I'm glad they pressed so hard to carry the torch.
    Looking forward to the premiere!

He’s worked in a lot of places with a lot of artists, and the fact that he was chosen to sing Dio’s spot at Heaven and Hell is quite the point that he is a monolith of rock and metal. Gonna nerd out a bit, apologies. The Flying Opera is the name of their live show/album; so called because their first two albums are titled The Metal Opera, Part 1& 2. Toby wrote albums for Avantasia in groups. The Scarecrow is the titular track of another album from a separate trilogy than the first (The Wicked Trilogy) So this song might not represent the Opera moniker as well as tracks from those albums, though I think it's more about it being a story than the musical style. I don't want to be a downer or anything either, but compared to Toby from a few years earlier, he seems to be having trouble. His voice changed dramatically after this tour, though he's gotten it back finally. Moonglow by Avantasia has him back in fine form, as well as featuring singers you're quite fond of. Hansi, and Geoff Tate make appearances, Jorn again, and more. Ravenchild, which I've seen recommended a lot is from that album. I definitely second that recommendation, or perhaps The Asylum by Edguy to see Toby at his finest. And to answer a little question from your video, the female vocalist is Amanda Sommerville, though she's not featured in this track.

"Wall of sound" is a good description of Avantasia in general. It's a project about being as big as possible.
As far as "opera" - there's a convention in prog rock/metal that a concept album has a single through story, and an opera adds to that a different singer for each character in the story. So something like Operation: Mindcrime is a concept album, but not an opera. Dr. X and Nicki are both performed by Geoff Tate. Avantasia, on the other hand, brings in ridiculous numbers of vocalists so that every character does get their own vocalist. Their song The Seven Angels is probably the most incredible example of this, and well worth your time.

  • @Immortall1408

This is a performance from Wacken 2008, even though the DVD with it came out in 2011 and that coincided with Avantasia´s second big tour. I think is a small introduction to members of this touring ensemble is in order.
*Tobias Sammet* - he is the main creative force for this project and a vocalist with great energy to support it; he has another band called Edguy, but this band is currently on hiatus as he is working on yet another Avantasia´s album
*Sascha Paeth* - the guitarist with hair; he is the person, who was able to convince Tobias to go on a tour with Avantasia and organize it; he owns a recording studio and worked with many bands in the past, even though you probably know only three by name: Kamelot, Epica, Shaman; and a very good guitarist to boot
*Felix Bohnke* - he is the drummer for Avantasia and he is also the drummer for Edguy
*Miro (or Michael Rodenberg)* - he is the keyboardist and the creator of orchestrations; and he works a lot in conjunction with Sascha Paeth; he had been also responsible for all studio keyboard parts in Kamelot until they hired Oliver Palotai as a full-time member
*Oliver Hartmann* - he is the bald guitarist, who is also a really good vocalist, even though in Avantasia he mostly provides backing vocals; he participated as a guest in many other projects and was a member of, at least, three bands that I can think of right now
*Robert Hunecke-Rizzo* - he is the bassist and the backing vocalist
*Cloudy Yang* - she is the backing vocalist with dark hair
*Amanda Somerville* - she is the backing vocalist with blonde hair; she used to be a backing vocalist for both Floor Jansen and Simone Simons in the past; she has been involved in a number of other metal projects over the last nearly 20 years, most recently, she was the villain on the latest Ayreon´s album
*Jørn Lande* - he is the vocalist that sings with Tobias in this particular song; he is known for his quite gritty power metal vocals and also his solo work and different musical projects
*Andre Matos* - you are already familiar with this vocalist; during the second tour his parts were sung by Michael Kiske
*Bob Catley* - he is an English singer whose career began in 1972; he was the lead singer in three bands, at least; and he has some solo work behind him
*Kai Hansen* - he was one of the founding members of Helloween and is, indeed, a prominent figure in power metal, at least, in Europe; his career spans more than four decades
*Henjo Richter* - he is a guitarist from the power metal band Gamma Ray, which was formed by Kai Hansen; he is there only for one song
If anybody wants to add anything, feel free to do so.

I'll just add that Hartmann has some pretty good solo albums and is indeed a great singer and Sommerville has a couple of great albums with Michael Kiske under the "Kiske-Sommerville" moniker :)
Also, Lande is a huge fan of Dio and has a full album of Dio covers in his honor and a great tribute song. He has an amazing gritty style but could also sing more soulful and bluesy, ala David Coverdale, specially back in the 90s.

Tha really good note, the top note. This is the only singer I've seen singing a more complex and high and precise note live than in the studio version. Tobias Sammet is awesome. Let alone he is in a concert where he already sang a few other complicated song before in the same evening

The last two shows of Avantasia I've seen in Hamburg lasted 3:10 and 3:30 hours. Absolute impressive!

    Just recently found your channel.
Your enthusiasm for singing is infectious and it’s fascinating to get a more technical perspective on these songs that I’ve enjoyed for so long.
Looked up some of your own singing and you are absolutely brilliant as well.
    Keep up the great work!!

Please take the time to review THE SENTINEL by Judas Priest. Live in Dallas 1986. You will be floored by Halfords quick ability to change 2 octaves in 2 syllables. Amazing performance worth a watch.

That's by far the best performance of that song Judas has ever done, better than the studio version. Halford cleared and sober from his addictions reached his second peak in vocal performance. That one still gives me the goosebumps to this day

I thoroughly recommend giving the actual Metal Opera a listen. IIRC it was the first thing Avantasia did, 13 signers singing different characters and a proper 2+ hour story throughout the two albums. The opening song of the second half is particularly good.

Tobias is amazing, so glad I had the opportunity to be at Wacken Open Air 2008!
Usually when they do a regular gig, they don’t have a support band before and the gig lasts about THREE HOURS without breaks. Another fascinating thing about Tobias is, that even towards the end of these three hours he still has enough power to jump across the stage like a crazy person and sing at the same time.
I really miss to go to those concerts… hopefully we can soon go to gigs like that again… life without gigs is just so dull…

Thank you for reacting to this song! One of my favorites Metal songs that I think that needs to be heard! Avantasia is awesome and hopefully you can react to more songs from them.
