  • Staying in a hotel is a relaxing experience most of the time. But sometimes it can be overshadowed by some pretty unpleasant things. A dirty bathroom, a broken chair... or a phone charger left in the room. Why is it a warning indicating you should leave your room ASAP? Could anyone spy on you through a phone charger?

I used to work for an executive protection firm. I was paid by the firm to go to their clients home do bug sweeps. I also did this to cars and limos. The most common places to hid a tracker on the exterior of your car are:
    1. On the frame rails under the car
    2. Under the rear bumper
    3. In the spare tire well
The most creative one I ever saw was inside the splash guard in the rear wheel well. My RF and EMF detector were going nuts but I couldn't see anything. I had to remove the splash guard to finally see it. Very sophisticated.
    Inside the car:
    1. In the cigarette lighter disguised as a phone charger or other device
    2. Buried deep in the center console (most folks rarely go in there unless they need something specific)
    3. In the OBD port (the plug on the driver's side usually next to or near the hood release, used by mechanics to diagnose a check engine light or other caution light). These are usually the most sophisticated ones because the are very well camouflaged since the probability that their target will see it accidentally is very high, also because it's plugged directly into the vehicle, it does not need batteries and is powered by the car itself and can go unnoticed for a very long time without it needing to be serviced by the person who put it there. This is less common though.
    Hope this helps.

Perhaps there's an exhibitionist streak in me but even if you don't feel the same, steal all the free wifi cameras. In fact, steal everything. The hotel can't take any action against you without getting in trouble themselves.

My parents, husband and I stayed in a motel room thirty years ago along with my six month old daughter. I swear that room was bugged but we needed to sleep somewhere. What happened was that my baby soiled herself badly and I needed to give her a bath as soon as we got into the room. There wasn’t a bath tub nor was the sink large enough to wash her in. I mentioned the fact to my mother, who replied that maybe we could ask for one at the front office, instantly the phone rang and we were asked if we required a baby bath. Granted they knew we had a baby so it may have been coincidental.
As I washed the baby, Mum decided to make everyone a cup of tea, but found that there were only three cups. She told me that there weren’t enough cups, instantly the phone rings and we were asked if we needed an extra cup. Again could have been coincidental, they may have known there were only three cups but the timing of the calls was very suspicious. Told Mum that we needed to be very careful what we said, not that we would have had said anything controversial. Only wish I used the opportunity to plan an imaginary bank heist or something to see just what happened.

My apologies for anything I've missed. Please take any leftover items to the desk so they can notify the previous guest. I never use public Wi-Fi. Turn off phone Wi-Fi and use your phones data. If you need to use a laptop use your phones hotspot with a password. Unplug any router or charger that isn’t yours.
