PPO stands for Preferred Provider Organization. There are In-Network and Out-of-Network Doctors and Hospitals.
HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organization. There is only insurance coverage for In-Network Doctors and Hospitals. HMOs will only cover Out-of-Network care if it is an emergency.
HMOs also require a primary care physician referral in order to see a specialist physician (such as a dermatologist).
EPO Stands for Exclusive Provider Organization. It is a cross between a PPO and an HMO. There is only insurance coverage for In-Network Doctors and Hospitals, BUT you DO NOT need a referral in order to see a specialist physician.
