Todmorden Pubs. Past and Present. First Round: Todmorden Town Centre

- As an 'offcumden', born in the shadow of the Humber Bridge, Todmorden has been my home town for only roughly 16 years, but it's a town who's history and buildings I adore. Recently in possession of a book from 1989 (Todmorden Pub Trail) I was amazed that, at one point, there were 91 pubs in the Todmorden border.
Some still exist, some are called different names, some are no longer pubs, some are a building in a distant memory. Over 5 videos I'll be looking at the locations of all 92 pubs and seeing what's there today. I won't always be right, so feel free to correct me.
I'd love to hear what your favourite Todmorden pub is or was, or any tales from them from your past.
Part 1, or 'First Round' with it being about pubs, looks at the centre of Todmorden.

My parents ran the Black Swan in the early 1970s. At the back of the pub was a yard, over those hoardings was a very long drop into the yard below. The door behind you was originally where the dray would bring the barrels to be dropped into the cellar far below. There was an iron (I presume) girder bridging the gap with a pulley system allowing barrels to be hooked up and transported across to the pub before being lowered into the cellar.
As for ghosts. My bedroom was on the top floor at the very end of the corridor, I often experienced strange feelings as I walked along the corridor, I often thought I heard voices when I was in my bedroom. On the middle floor, there is a room at the front of the building, again at the end of the corridor, where we stored our spare furniture, I once got a wallop for messing around in there - I was about 9yrs old, a bit young for stacking furniture, the 3pce suite had moved with the seats upside down on the sofa, the dining chairs were on top of the table.

I have the pub old trail book. I was brought up in the butchers Arms in which is now known as the
board rose.

We've stayed a number of times at the Queen's Hotel/Pub. Opposite the train station. I'm surprised it's just a b&b now, we found the pub very welcoming enjoyable meals, and drinks excellent b&b too. Maybe the witherspoon pub had a lot to do with the pub closing, sad 😮.
Yeah, I used to pop in for the Sunday Carvery, a nice spot. Not sure what it is at the moment, but would be good to see it back to it's former self....Wetherspoons has gone now too!
