Back in the day, I had a used car for sale for $1,000 and the guy wanted to beat me down to $500. About 5 minutes later a second person walked up and said he was there about the car. The first guy said, "I was here first!!!" I said, "Your right. If you give me $1,000 for the car it's yours!" He gave me $1,000, I signed the title over to him. And as far as the second guy that showed up, (My friend) he went inside and we had lunch! :-)

Always say “yes it’s available. When did you want to pick up YOUR table?”
It just puts it in their head that they own the table. They just need to come and get it.

Hi, really like this video, thank you. You’ve really got some of the sales techniques/tip downs. I’ve been car sales for about 10 years and I know a lot of sales people that could do with some of this advice. The big one was definitely number 10, it’s amazing how hard it is for people to ask for the business. I would just like to add, when it comes to negotiation don’t be afraid to say no and justify the reasons why no. You touched on this in the video, sometimes people might not know the reason they paying a premium. Just make sure you don’t leave it open if there is nothing you can do. I used to see so many New starters say things like let me see, I’ll try, let me look into that. All the customer here’s is yes.
If you can’t move on price the answer is no. A polite and justified no but still no.
I have just started in woodworking and i’m really liking your videos, they’re giving me a lot of confidence going forward. Thank you.

Great info! I post pictures of projects while in the shop because of my excitement, but found when I put that project in the house for the photo it generates excitement in the client. Stay organized...price reflects the maker’s confidence many times. You can’t compete with China. Make it right, make it good, make it profitable. The difference between a hobby and a business is the direction of the cash flow. You guys are super!

Great video. Marketplace has set my business on fire in my area for the last year. It went from a hobby selling a few things to BAM, to a full on small business. What you said in tip 3 was spot on. I once made a post and labeled it "free" and posted about 10 things that I've made. I was mainly thinking it would get people to my facebook business page to see what me and my Wife make and hopefully there was something for everyone lol. I got a lot of business out of it but more headache than anything. I probably received 200 messages about how much this cost or that cost. It got so crazy I just started copy and pasting the same reply to everyone. I think I got about 10 jobs out of it and 30-40 new followers which has gotten me some more business but I'd rather just post one item per post and link my fb page from now on or website when it's built. Marketplace is a gold mine but its touchy lol.

#11 For any big project: Highly recommend getting a non-refundable deposit (electronically as discussed in your video) that at least covers your materials! My friend does this before burning fuel, potentially wasting time, loading up a load of lumber, spending hours building and finishing a piece of furniture for someone to simply back out on delivery day...unfortunately this has happened more than once leaving finished furniture pieces taking up space until they sell.

I'm 64 and retired plus a disabled vet with PTSD. I like to keep my hands busy and have always wanted to wood work. I love the fact that you and others are working together to become businesses, it's totally awesome. I am interested in knowing if you would build me a cutting table for my sewing projects. It would be like a kitchen table but would be used for laying out a couple of yards of material and cutting it up for whatever project I'm working on. I have back problems so it needs to be high enough about 35" so I don't have to bend over to cut out projects. I only problem would be getting it to me. I live in Southeast Missouri in Portageville.

Thankyou for posting this. I am at the point of rather pulling teeth than trying to sell on Facebook marketplace. In a sad point I am so glad it's just not me with the ridiculous questions asked when you state everything clearly and it happens everywhere not just the UK, I laughed so much at reenactment as that is exactly me at workshop 😂. I have just been reaching out to everyone I know trying to find a better place to sell as spend more time answering X!"* Questions than working. Really appreciate the tips and will be putting all to practice immediately. Some are commonsense but like me when you are grafting away they simply don't come to mind. Thanks again

I've been making stuff on my CNC for about a year and I make some cool stuff. But I lost faith in my sales because of the 1$ thing. Thank you so much I'm getting back on the grind.

I don't have a CNC but would pay to have just certain cuts from one for random projects. A bet there is other wood workers out there like me that would buy cuts if you sell them at a price they could incorporate in their projects and still make a reasonable profit. Basically paying to use the router briefly. Its usually smaller more complex pieces which would ship for cheap. Put that cnc to work for you until you begin selling what you want to make

I was surprised to hear that you deliver big items like tables in a public, neutral spot instead of in their homes. I can totally relate to tip #10. I have often been guilty of using the wrong language when someone contacts me. "You don't want to buy this, do you?" I'm almost talking them out of the sale or trying to justify the price of the item or talk up the quality of it to them. That's my biggest struggle. Is believing my item is the quality that they are willing to pay and worth their money.

This is great. you guys are always so helpful. So here is the one question I just can't seem to find. I want to be able to find other woodworkers that are selling their stuff online and shipping. These were great tips for local purchases and something I definitely need to start doing. But right now I only sell small items that are easy to ship. But what about the sideboard that I just built? I want to know the ins and out of shipping furniture items.

Great question, Angie. I think some of the guys in the Stud Stack ship items, we haven't done it (yet). Also, if you look up Christina (@GlamFarmhouse) or Pete (@FurniturebyPete) on Instagram, they ship pretty regularly I think.
I hope you'll consider joining the Stud Stack!

I don’t build furniture but I do refinish it, I have found that when doing custom orders it complicates things if I give my clients too many choices, usually they just say “ I like your style so I’m giving you full design control” that’s a scary thing sometimes, I usually just ask for a photo of the room the piece will be in. Another thing that I always do is write a short thank you postcard and in that I always ask them for feedback in the form of a business review, I feel like small business owners are afraid to do that or they just don’t know how to ask but reviews can make or break a small business.

Your #2 tip reminded me of a funny joke. You can put all of the info in there, size, shape, weight, material etc. and invariably someone will ask, "what's the length?" .. true story, I was selling a used bike on FBM and in the title it said "Men's 26" Bike ... " and the first question I got was "is it a man's bike or women's bike and also what is the size?" .. no kidding, I actually received that.

I just want to know, is there some short of law restriction for selling your art on marketplace for example?
As carpenters our products is more like art and not production stuff, we don't have a printed price on them.
Can you actually sell on marketplace without having a law trouble or you are in front of questions from tax office like "where did you get all that money this year?"
