    This can be used when the computer/ECM stops regulating the voltage. This can also be done to regulate any 12 volt battery alternator combination. It completely separates the voltage regulating from the computer .
    Here are the parts I use. A junk yard would also have these parts.
    Parts used
    Dodge external voltage regulator (1971-1989)
    Voltage Regulator Connector
    14 Gauge wire (I color code mine red, black and green for a good ground)
    Inline fuse with 15-20 AMP fuse (Not necessary but what I do)
    Screws
    Electrical tape
    Wire Nuts (I solder the connections together but some people use wire nuts.)

    ive been chasing this problem for about 3 months on and off...never realized the computer switched the ground side of that 2 wire connector to tell alternator to charge...thought it was bad battery or alternator or connection......great solution.

    If your watching this video your alternator is probably overcharging. I did this and still over charged.
    Jumper cable from each negative side of batteries to the block revealed bad ground at batteries.
    They looked fine! I spent all weekend changing both batteries, alternator, cleaned all battery connections, rigged up a ECU bypass, and was just about to replace the ECU itself. REPLACE YOUR GROUND WIRE 1ST.

      The Ground wires are always the most pain in the ass items to find when system is messing up everything..
      you can look at the light system in any car.. front or rear of the car.. you have Brake + Back up + Driving lights "Maybe Turn light if it's orange lens" All hot wires..
      AND 1 skinny ground wire heading to the back and most of the time a skinny little wire on the passenger side from the light's ground to the body..
      Ground wires should be a size or 2 bigger when you have so many hot wires tied into them..

    So I mimicked that today. Got my alternator to run and charge. The issue I'm having is that on my battery gauge on idle I'd say it sits at 65% but when I hit the gas and keep it on high rps the gauge bounces really fast between 70% and 75%. At the same time my dash lights flickers as well as my dome light. Like I said, I made a mimic so the way I ground it is by putting a wire from the negative battery post to the body of the evr. By your video I assume I need to ground it to the alternator? I have a 91 dodge d350. Any tips would be awesome!

    Hopefully before you buy the kit read this. My alternator wouldn't charge unless I revved the engine up and then after a few minutes it would quit. I thought it had to be the voltage regulator. I bought an external one and couldn't get it to work for anything no matter how I hooked it up. I got pissed and sprayed choke cleaner on the alternator (let it dry) and it started working. When I had it checked it happened to be charging. So if you haven't spent the money yet try that

    it is not alternating current, its DC to power the field of the alt, and if you say the blue wire has to go to power, yet they don't matter at the alt, then the blue wire can go to wither one as well.

    If you place a ballast resistor across the two wires that originally went to the alternator it will turn the battery light on the dash off. Just installed a external regulator kit on a Wrangler the other day. All the parts came as a kit. I'm sure it would be cheaper to source the parts on your own like you did.

    95 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel. Dodge made very few of these ECU's (ECM), and apparently no after market ECU's (ECM). The entire thing failed. If I can't find one then then my truck is only good for parts or scrap metal, but this truck could be on the road for another 20 years if it weren't for this stupid problem.
    I like this idea very much, but other than trying to get the alternator to charge the battery, the ECU also allows the over drive to turn on, plus the AC, and the tachometer to function, which none of them ar working on my truck. I need hacks for all of this and I could eliminate the ECU all together.
    I'm not having any check engine lights come on. It apparently requires the ECU to function to do that.

      FLD + is the one from the middle wire location that gets 12 Volts from battery and the other wire FLD - goes to the third wire or outside wire edge of the plug ..
      This should be a good look as how to wire it up. I know you don't need this anymore BUT you never know if you have a tractor or some other mode of transport that wont charge worth a carp.. This will give you a few ideas on how to wire them up.. Dodge style,. :P

      @8lugdrift550 Před 3 lety

      I’m an installer. You shouldn’t need 15 volts. Are you having issues when your subs hit? If you’re having problems in car audio it’s usually a bad ground or the amp pulls too much from the battery. Double check your grounds and get a capacitor for your amp.

    • @justabouthadit5872
      @justabouthadit5872 Před 3 lety +1

      At 15.5 volts most car amplifiers produce exponentially higher watt levels than 13.5 and many folks up the voltage. Yes the current is the important number typically, but try it yourself, put an amp on the dyno and supply it 12vdc then 15.5 vdc, the numbers will amaze you. And you should make sure before you recommend a capacitor to explain what it does, some folks like myself don't want the amplifier(s) limited to the amount of current it can draw.

      I'm just came across this post but No..
      you have an internal voltage reg on that 01 PT..
      However.. It can be rewired differently cheap and easy,. I would have to look at the "I think " 3 small wires other then the Battery wire on the alternator and add a 194 bulb and a pig tail..
      You use a good ground on 1 side and use the bulb as an exciter and the other wire goes to Alternator..
      When you turn on the key but don't start the car, The 194 bulb will light up, Start the car and bulb is now off and your charging.. IF the alternator in that PT is good..
      This is a trick I found out playing around back in the 80's trying to get an Chevy citation to charge because the ECM was going..
      It worked for 5 years till the one girl got rid of the car..
      Not to mention,. If u turn on the key and bulb is not lit.. Replace bulb.. It's blown.. Her 194 bulb never blew out because it's only on a few seconds or mins til you start the car,.
      Also if the car is running while your checking any fluids lit the trans or power steering, You should not see any light on..
      It's also a poorman's dashboard light.. Just way outta the dash and under the car hood,. :P

    I cannot believe everyone installs them this way. Way overkill. On Dodges and Jeeps, the field has a green/orange and green wire that controls the field. The green/orange comes from the ASD relay and is +12v the solid green is negative (high speed switching via transistor) from the PCM. All that you have to do is cut the green wire at PCM and run the green wire to the green at alternator and splice the blue wire to to the green/orange wire at alt plug. This is a true "two wire install". No wires "bypass resistor", relays yada yada. Why install fuses and all that shit when the factory already has it there. You get no check engine lights, volt meter still works. PS. the green/orange is the voltage "sense" You took a 15 min install and turned it into a mess. If your wiring colors are different then turn your key to the on position and find the +12v at the alt plug and slice your blue from the VR to it. Mount the vr in front of the battery on radiator support.

    • @edgeofvamp

      Single wire alternators are internally regulated at the alternator. Also known as a self exciting alternator, no way to easily wire this in and it isn't necessary. These are usually used to remove voltage regulation from the computer.

    • @TB0321
      @TB0321 Před 3 lety +1

      Depending on the year, make, model of your vehicle (2006 and up usually), you will need a modified field driver attached to the alternator itself and a 2.4k ohm resistor added might need to be added on the field sense wires in order to trick the PCM into thinking it's operating correctly. Otherwise, the PCM may throw a check engine light and low battery light indication.
      The PCM internal voltage regulator puts out voltage signal between 0.05-.5 volts to the alternator which "opens" the alternator charging circuit. In-turn, this enables the alternator to begin charging the vehicle electrical system at ~13.8~14.6 volts.
      It is doubtful that you could remove the PCM connectors to the internal voltage regulator portion of the PCM and not have the computer throw a fault/trouble code of some type.

    • @TB0321
      @TB0321 Před 2 lety

      @@flbassmaster5551 Depends on the Year, Make, and Model of your Dodge. Basically, the PCM has an internal voltage regulator. If that function is no longer working, you either need to get a new PCM or you can bypass it and use an external regulator.
      The PCM Internal Voltage Regulator monitors electrical load and increases (or decreases) load as appropriate. The field sense wire(s) sends a . 05-. 5v signal to the alternator. Once the PCM internal regulator "senses" that the alternator is receiving the signal, then the PCM will command or drive the alternator voltage (usually this will vary depending on battery voltage, stereo, defroster, Air cond., etc).
      If you bypass the PCM internal regulator, you need to "trick" the PCM into thinking it's still working and sending (and receiving) current to the alternator. A Field Sense Wire Kit puts out a constant voltage to the alternator, which allows the aftermarket external voltage regulator to now control the voltage output. The aftermarket external voltage regulator will put out constant voltage instead of varying according to electrical load.
      If your vehicle uses internal PCM voltage regulation and you don't use the field sensing kit, then there's nothing telling the alternator to start producing voltage (electricity).
