I was at this game as well as last years Heineken cup final. Aside from blitz defence the biggest difference was leinster were much more selective when they kicked the ball or went into their attacking shape. In last years final, leinster were guilty of over playing in their own half and getting turned over instead of kicking and making la rochelle play from deep. This year leinster were so much smarter with their game management.
@101MIGHTYJOE: I agree with you. I was in the stadium for last year’s final too. If only Leinster would have tried to arrange a drop kick in the final minutes (like Johnny did against France in 2016, or even Munster against Leinster the week before the final!).
But anyway: I’ve got tickets for Croke Park… only 2 more matches to get that fifth star! ⭐️
Enjoyed the analysis...great stuff. Obviously line speed closing the space stopped a lot of the big LARs mens momentum. LAR travel also probably impacted...relatively fine margins at this level

the pendulum doesn't involve leaving 3 players at the back, that's why it is called a pendulum, it involves 3 players who interchange being in the back, but only 2 are at the back at any one point.
Yes. Thats why I said depending on the position of the ball. The pendulum is more flexible and will change between 12 and 13 players in the defensive line.
The point that I was making is that the 13+2 allows for a more set defensive line whereas the pendulum will create a weaker defensive line because players need to change in and out depending on the position of the ball.

Most of the Leinster scrum losses were when the bench came on and most were technical penos. Like some didn't get as far as ball put in!
exactly there was only one scrum that one sided dominated and Leinster took it

And my background in rugby is just a passionate fan that likes the tactical aspects of the sport. I played at high school level but never further. And I always try to read up on and become more informed about the game whenever I can😁

La Rochelle's pack 968kg, Leinster's pack 944kg. Leinster's forwards were not far off the La Rochelle pack and the Leinster backs were bigger. R Byrne is 6'3, Frawley 6'3 , Henshaw 6'3 Osborne 6'4 Lowe 6'2 (but can lift guys like Etzebeth)
I do see what you're saying but:
1. I do think that the pack weight makes a big difference given the intensity of a professional rugby match and the amount of collisions. That weight difference, while relatively close, will matter over the course of 80 minutes.
2. La Rochelle's pack is built and trained for the power game. This is a focus for them and its been that way for a long time. So they will still have an edge here even if the pack weights are similar because Leinster focus on other skillsets. Another example is the Springboks. There are heavier packs but they are without a doubt the most physical team in the world right now.
Although I definitely agree that Leinster backline is scary😉
@@thegainline yessir no argument on the power game, but La Rochelle were dominated in the forwards and backs. Also take a look at who left the field injured.... two La Rochelle backs (Leyds replaced at half time injured and Kerr Barlow)... tells the tale really... esp when you compare it to the 5 Stormers players leaving the field injured against La Rochelle the week before. Don't underestimate the power of Leinster/Ireland that's a tale of the past.

You say the Leinster backs were ‘bigger’ but don’t post the weights of either team’s back line. Can you add this context?
