"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on CZcams. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on CZcams, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Someone calling you "self-hating" is a more acceptable way of calling you a "race traitor".
Is it more "acceptable," though? "Race traitor" is at least to the point. To call someone "self-hating" is more like a psychological diagnosis, suggesting that those who say it want the recipient to question their own mind.

This was great. Mostly because I’m a lifelong Libertarian (I know, I know, I suck) and it made me happy to see Dave getting some attention for absolutely cleaning up in that debate.
Also, it was nice to see two political ideologies coming together in order to stand up for what they believe is right… we really do agree on more than we disagree and unfortunately it took something this egregious for us to realize that, if only temporarily
You don't suck. I'm fairly new to libertarianism (around 4 years) and I think libertarians are one of the only principled parties (esp on war and speech) which is what initially drew me in. They don't wage battles in partisan BS. They call out what they like from both parties and call out what they hate from both parties. They seem to be the most pragmatic and honest, imo, though I'm clearly biased.
Nobody’s a “lifelong libertarian”. Eventually you gotta grow up and get a job.
Massie, for example, has been amazing on all things war, Covid, free speech, and personal liberty writ large. I'm a fan.

I love Dave Smith and Part of the Problem. One of my favorite podcasts these days. Definitely don't agree on economics for the most part, but when it comes to censorship, guns rights, privacy, imperialistic wars, etc. he's great. The Dems have fallen off so hard that I identify more with the Libertarians than the Dems these days.

As a leftist, I have a soft spot for Libertarians since that's what I was before I turned socialist. At the very least, I DO believe Libertarians care about personal freedom and non-intervention and that's more than I can say for the Republicans.

Leftism and libertarianism are not mutually exclusive. One can believe in limited government, freedom, workers rising in strength to take control of the means of production, and non-interventionist policy.

I love this. It’s so refreshing to see honest people from different perspectives that can all agree that this has to stop. It’s so revolting to see these shows where people are just parroting these talking points and can’t admit to what’s going on
The Emperor's New Clothes
There is an emperor who is obsessed with fancy new clothes, and spends lavishly on them, one day two con-men visit the emperor. Posing as weavers, they offer to supply him with magnificent clothes that are invisible to those who are incompetent or stupid. A succession of officials, starting with the emperor's wise and competent minister, and then ending with the emperor himself, visit them to check their progress. Each sees that the looms are empty but pretends otherwise to avoid being thought a fool.
Finally, the weavers report that the emperor's suit is finished. They mime dressing him and he sets off in a procession before the whole city. The townsfolk uncomfortably go along with the pretense, not wanting to appear inept or stupid, until a child blurts out that the emperor is wearing nothing at all. The people then realize that everyone has been fooled. Although startled, the emperor continues the procession, walking more proudly than ever.

It is because Richard Pryor is the blueprint that modern American comedians follow whether they know it or not! Pryor was a fed-up Black man, that used his comedy to bring light to racial issues! Without him there would not even be a George Carlin! We have to know the origin of things, because humans follow patterns and Pryor's technique stands until this very day, so comedians follow it. He was not the first one in history to do it, but he introduced it into popular American culture. I do not like how Pryor was in his personal life, but that is why this is happening today.

Its sad to me that leftism and libertarianism are often viewed as diametrically opposed, you can be both. Libertarian when it comes to interfering with people lives, leftie when it comes to improving them
The economics do make us diametrically opposed.
You can't be for not interfering with people's lives if you believe you have a right/duty to "improve" them.
We agree on anti-war issues. That's really about it.
But if it has to involve consent then it's not lefty and if consent is not necessary because 'greater good, I promise' then it's not libertarian. Charity is obviously not a concept exclusive to the left but attacking/threatening others (or having government proxies do it for you) into doing/funding whatever it is that you deem to be charity is not actually charity, it's more akin to terrorism. Big difference.
