We speak to Japanese people in Shinjuku in English.
My life Japan (Cameraman) / @mylifejapantv - Zábava
As you can see, many Japanese people don't speak English. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing, though. In my opinion, a lot of interest part of Japanese culture came from the fact that not many Japanese people speak foreign languages.
But it also means that if you want to make Japanese friends from Japan or possibly date a Japanese girl or guy, it'll be much, much better if you speak Japanese. So, if you want to learn Japanese with me, I can send you some free Japanese lessons by email. Click here to subscribe bit.ly/2Kc7UaQ
I love japanese people. They are humble. They always smile and I like that, because I'm from Indonesia, and by smiling we have shown others that we are friendly ppl.. But, unfortunately, most japanese ppl cant speak english.
Well, I'm not a native speaker actually.
And I'm not interested in learning japanese.. its too late for me to learn it..😭
When Japanese girls speaking English, they appear different characters , a Western girl, more openly and friendly
Was that Japanese girl eating a pineapple while walking 🧐
Very interesting; I had thought English would be taught in schools like it is in most countries. I have an affinity with the far east and Japan in particular and it would be nice to think I'll be able to have an English conversation when I'm over there as sadly I don't speak anything else!
It's ok. A lot of anglos speak 1 lenguage and nobody gives a damn.
Every Japanese person interviewed “can you speak English?” “No”
proceeds to understand and answer every question in English

Cheesy wiz Yeah like I understand quite a bit of Japanese and I know some words but I’m not confident in speaking it at all
Obsessed since 2010 I can relate. You just have to jump into it face first and get corrected. That how you learn.

Interviewee: No
**Interviewer Continues to Ask questions in English**
In Japan, 'no' doesn't always mean 'no' lol
That Japanese Man Yuta how do you mean "no" doesn't mean "no"?
People tend to downplay their skills because we are taught to be modest.
I really hate this tatemae culture of Japan. If I was told no by a person, I'd leave leave that person cold because the person said no. I'd really appreciate it if they at least answered "so-so" rather than a cold "no" to the question.

Still a good video! Many of the people didn't say they didn't want to to talk to you.
Aleksi Himself that’s how Japanese are. They don’t know how to refuse in a straightforward manner.
Aleksi Himself they all say no. It's second nature to deny ability. If you ask a grand piano master if they can play piano they'll say "a little bit..."
Also most people don't realize just how much English they know!! Every student here studies English a minimum of 6 years as well as 2 years of organized English activities weekly in elementary school. Some stuff sinks in after a while :) Not to mention that the Japanese language actually utilizes thousands of English words that are used constantly.
What's crazy is even though they say no they still answer the question like what I thought you said you didn't understand? Lol

It's honestly impressive hearing the students speak so well, even with a few small hesitations they corrected themselves where they needed to ("weeks" to "years"), and without letting that interrupt or stall their speak. I feel like, when I was at school, those that learned German still struggled, when it came to speaking German without preparation (ie- when in conversation with German peoples), despite German's close relation to English and it's trading words between languages.
EDIT: Actually, pronunciation for everyone was really good, it's not something I expect when hearing a non-native speaker because of media and how it shows peoples pronunciation. I think it's nice to hear the Japanese twist from some, as well though, I think it's because of how consonants work in Japan but I'm not sure, but the addition of vowels between them, or at the end of words ending with consonants, I honestly love it so much, it melts my heart, it's like hearing American's saying "Y'all".
Most of them say no but they actually have a pretty good understanding of the language. I'm also not a native English speaker but I'd say I'm doing fine. The problem in most countries(as well as my own) is that the level of English they teach there is not really enough to hold a normal conversation, so id you are really interested in the language you have to learn it yourself.
Dantoxism There's also a difference between passive and active fluency: Many people may perfectly understand what you are saying (passive), but won't be able to word their answer (in a grammatical correct way). Obviously, this is not exclusive to Japan, you'll see it anywhere you go.
That's why I'm so thankful to my English teacher in college. She was very nice and polite and even though she had to teach us some grammar and vocabulary as every teacher does, she also had conversations with us during every class and she always asked us about our opinions on sth. You had to talk during these classes and she wasn't strict, she was minimize the level of stress, she helped you when you didn't know sth and when you were in the fix. From this time I gained confidence to have conversations in English with everyone, she really taught me to speak.
+DuchAmagi Good for you! I always feel some awkward tension in English class so it would be nice to relieve some of that stress with a teacher like the one you had. Having conversations with the students is a very nice way of adapting to the language and it makes it just easier for you to use it in everyday life. I just feel lucky for having friends who can speak English so I can speak it on daily basis , otherwise I don't think I could've learnt English just from classes. It's bad that most people get their knowledge about English only from schools where it isn't taught the right way. I'm sure someday it'll be better, but for now we just gotta deal with it :). Btw where are you from?
I'm from Poland. And you?
I'm from Bulgaria.
I loved this!! Listening to them try so hard to speak English was awesome. They should all be proud of their skills.
That was pretty cool. I had a similar experience interacting with people when I was in Tokyo last year. If your patient and know how to greet folks in Japanese they were very helpful even with the language barrier.
It's nice to see someone learn English and to speak it with more of a British accent.
yeah, I think it's hard for people to learn a language and then an accent on top of that, so most english is preferred to be taught and spoken in a "standard" American "accent".
With respect, that's not a very logical thing to say, Regina! Why would a Japanese person learning any variety of English see it as first learning a language and then acquiring an accent "on top"? Would you say that about someone who had been taught to speak with an American accent?
As for accent "preferences", doesn't that have far more to do with the teacher than with the learner? I've met Japanese people who have been taught (or taught themselves) to speak English using as far as possible an accent typical of the way the language is spoken in England -- and are conscious of that fact. But doubtless there are as many, if not more, examples of learners who self-awaredly use an American accent. In neither case, however, is it a question, I would say, of acquiring an accent on top of learning a language. The two processes are inseparable.
Ynysmitwr You hit it spot on.
Lol what's the point of putting American "accent" in quotes like it isn't a real accent? It just makes you look petty.
Pope Benedict to be fair it's not, there are four or five American accents.
That lady at 2:40 spoke wonderful English. She even threw in a "like" in there. Props.
No what are you talking about? She pretends to be good but actually isn't. She's worse than me and I know that I am not good.
Ikr her English was so good
And she barely had an accent like wow I️ was rlly impressed
Like she had a few grammatical errors but overall I️t was great
Uhhh what?! Her self-confidence makes me feel kind of angry. She barely had an accent?!? It's nice that you support her but for me (as a foreigner) she had a protruding accent.
Leon Schuessler
Um as a native English speaker I️ have to disagree.
Her accent was very minimal especially for a language not even related to English.
I️ literally know a native English speaker that has a similar accent to her. Her accent isn’t exactly gone but it’s closer to an American accent than most other Japanese people.
Leon Schuessler
Also self-confidence? Where? She seemed very uncertain of herself the whole time... (even tho she shouldn’t be because her English is great)
I️m sorry that you feel bad that your English isn’t that good but you don’t have to bring someone else down. Just practice more you’ll get I️t eventually.

When I lived in Japan and got lazy I'd speak english to my friends and they would respond back in Japanese. It used to make my friend who was super fluent in Both mad because he would say we were cheating. But it was fun to be able to speak 2 different languages at once and not lose the flow of the conversation.
8:13 what a beautiful display, its like she's speaking English being directly translated from Japanese.
The last woman is very good at English. She indicated she has been studying English since she was little. That has paid off.
In general it takes a huge amount of time for Japanese speakers to learn English and vice versa. The two languages are so, so different. Young children can learn two languages quite well but by the time you're a teenager, it's a long uphill struggle.
You were asked in english and your friend suddenly speaks fluent english you didn't even knew that they speak 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Was Okinawa kind of its own culture?
According to anime, everyone in Okinawa speaks Japanese.
Uchinaguchi is the native language of Okinawa but really only the older generation speak it. The younger generation who do use it speak Japanese with a few Uchinaguchi words thrown in. As for English the older generation who grew up with the American occupation know quite a lot of English and like to practice it with foreigners.

I remember more than 30 years ago visiting friends in a quiet rural area of Kyushu, and I met a group of Japanese that were very interested in talking with my friend & me, so we agreed and did it. They wanted to practice speaking and listening to a native English speaker. I enjoyed the experience and am thinking that next time I go to this quiet town, I will once again offer my services, if they are interested of course.
I've always wondered what Japan is like, especially Tokyo
Japanese people so humble. "Do you speak english"? "No" then they continue to speak english.
I met two Japanese guys in the Irish bar in Shinjuku when I sat at the table next to them. I couldn't find a place to put my backpack, when one of the guys leaned over and gestured to a hook that was under the table for bags and other such items. I thanked him in Japanese, and then responded "Gomenasai gozaimasu! Watashi wa nihongo wo warui desu!" (I am sorry, my Japanese is bad) when he responded to my Japanese in Japanese (that was a mouthful)
He then switched over to fluent English and congratulated me for my "flawless" pronunciation of the above sentence (Still not sure if he was being genuine, or if it was Japanese politeness) and explained that he had studied English for a few years in England. We then spent a few hours discussing favourite bands, what we loved about each others countries, and just general banter.
Japan is a phenomenal country :)
EDIT: 8:12 Her accent made me think she had studied English in England. She has a slight posh accent in how she pronounces words ending with vowels, sort of drawing out the vowel to give a slight regal pronunciation.
I swear she sounds like she studied English under Margaret Thatcher.
But she stayed in Australia and new zealand...

I actually went to Japan last year in October. English is my second language and Japanese is my third-ish but I couldn’t speak Japanese, only listen and understand a bit
Obviously that means me communicating with Japanese is quite hard. But we proceeded to meet some people that could talk my language and it was such a cool experience! Some are extremely great with English too actually.

You know what's funny? In my visit to Japan to Tokio I found out older people (like very old people) spoke perfect English, while young people didn't at all. That was kind of surprising.
PetrSojnek I had a very similar experience!
that probably has to do with world war 2's influence on japan and its people nah?
PetrSojnek Not that surprising when you consider they've been alive longer.
Same in Kyoto, people in their 50s 60s most likely
I was stationed there for awhile. The other thing I noticed is that the younger generations hated the American military while the older they were the more they seemed to love us.....many drunk nights due to a retired Tokyo cop.
The last lady is so eloquent. I'm impressed!!
A lot of them are really good! Even if they aren’t confident or can only understand and not speak or only say certain words that’s amazing!!!
I started learning English in 4th grade and became fluent around 9th grade. It's a pretty straightforward language, especially compared to French (my native tongue) and German (which I started learning in 8th grade). I wish Japanese were as easy to master. T__T
Philippe Parle Peu um ,
i think japanese is pretty easy to learn than french or german
but when you get to kanjis , you fucked
That's surprising, usually non-native speakers think English is really difficult. Good job!
partiallyhydrogen8ed nah there are a lot of harder languages then english.
french is harder than english even though it's our native tongue
You're going to have a much easier time learning a language from 4th-9th grade than you would from 8th-12th... Also, you're going to have a much tougher time learning a language as a self-study in adulthood than if you'd learned it as a child during daily mandatory schooling.
I like how it sounds when they say “etooo”
It's really fascinating to hear a non native speaker of English speak in a different accent than the one you're used to for me I have an American English accent so hearing people speak for example in an Australian accent is really interesting.🙂
You should see if people can pronounce western boy/girl names, or places.

Who hath believed our report ? For and to whom is the arm of Lord revealed ?
For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath
No form nor comeliness ; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
He is despised and rejected of men; a men of sorrows , and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised and we esteemed him not.
Surely he hath borne our grief , and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, and he was
all .
He was oppressed , and he was afflicted , yet he opened not his mouth : he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter , and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openers not his mouth.
He was taken from prison
From judgment: and who shall declare this generation? For
He was cut off out of the land of the living: for he was cutting off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence , neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him ; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin he shall see his seed , he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
He shall see of the travail of his soul , and shall be satisfied : by
His knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many ; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore Will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the spoil with the strong ; because he hath pored out his soul unto death : and he was numbered with the transgressor ; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

i was there one week ago !!, nice video !!
Another at least they tried and looked it’s quite humble to me , saw the way they were starting at and smiling even though they can’t speak but I would spend my half day off talking to them 🤓
As a south korean , i really enjoy your videos since i started being interested in japan. I appreciate what you are doing . It's great , keep it up . Nombe !!!!!!
crush on a harmonica recently
what do korean people think about japanese language?
Most of us don't like Japan and Japanese people because of history.
Of course it depends on person. Personally it's quite unique and cool. At least good to listen unlike Chinese.
I think English is closer when pronouncing it, for Koreans, than Japanese would be.
@@aab4065 I like listening to the Chinese accent too!
3:50 is my new text tone

"What's your favorite type of alcohol?"
"....Do you mean if I have a high tolerance?"
"Sure"
Not realizing what language you're listening to is a thing when you're fluent in more than one language. I'm not a native english speaker yet often times it takes a while to realize I'm listening to english when I don't necessary expect it
Jack Mcslay Im not very good at Japanese but if Ive been studying recently and then one of my students (I teach English) sometimes I respond to them by accident even though Im not meant to if I understood I often just dont notice
