  • Documentary about the Bulgarian dissident poisoned by the tip of an umbrella in central London.
    7th September 1978, Georgi Markov, a Bulgarian living in London was travelling to work. Following his usual routine he left his car and crossed Waterloo Bridge. He had no idea that on this day he was being watched. As Markov waited for a bus he felt something sting his leg, he turned to see a man picking up an umbrella and running away. What seemed at first like a curious accident turned into an extraordinary detective story, when three days later, Markov died.
    The incident became legendary because of the weapon used - it’s one of the strangest tales of the Cold War, peppered with poisons, political intrigue, and ingenious gadgets.

The case from France is simply luck and cuz he refused to go to the doctor's and decided to stay home in the bed. The story here isn't exactly accurate. There was very small amount of poison in the second "disc" as the wax haven't resolved properly and the poison didn't move that fast through out his system

    The beginning of this story is a perfect example of one of the basic flaws of mankind and that is the acceptance level. People are terrified to be ridiculed and so will accept nothing that is not already 'general knowledge'. It is the best protection against secrets: something must be made so egregious that is surpasses the acceptance level of peers and authorities. And group acceptance levels are much lower than individual acceptance levels.

    In the year 2000, the late Sir Teddy Taylor MP, deposited a file in the House of Commons Library. Two years later the late Leader of the House, Robin Cook, made deposited files available to journalists. The file is known as the Markov File, and documents how the Markov assassination led to the Moscow Coup of August 1991, which led to the break up of the Soviet Union. Markov was the victim of a British double agent. He had wanted to return home and had sent a letter to Deputy Interior Minister General Stoyan Savov asking what his sentence would be if he returned home. A British double agent, a woman, was very well connected and was consulted. She said 'He's not very discrete, is he?' This one sentence resulted in Markov's plea being rejected, and his being sentenced to death. After two failed attempts, the KGB provided the pneumatic gun/pen that was used to kill Markov. The notorious umbrella was not a weapon. It was a prop that was dropped by the killer with his left hand so as to permit him him to bend down and fire the pellet into Markov's thigh with his right hand. Markov didn't notice the pen and later assumed that the umbrella had been the weapon. The pellet was not discovered at the hospital and Dr Iain West, a forensic pathologist working for MI5, was ordered to find and extract the pellet, so that the killing could be pinned on the KGB. Thirteen years later, in August 1991, the killing resulted in the firing of the two chiefs of the Bulgarian Intelligence Service (the First Chief Directorate) by the new pro-Western President, Zhelyu Zhelev. For various reasons, this precipitated the unplanned Moscow Coup by the KGB a few days later. The House of Commons file documents all the details. The Markov assassination was one of the most important events of the 20th century.

    • @jackieow
      @jackieow Před rokem

      @@djquinn11 The public "Umbrella Man" was a faker, to throw off suspicion. If you see the real Umbrella Man in the Zapruder film he is standing still at the right side of the Stemmons freeway sign, in front of it. In reality, evidenced by the Willis Photo #5, he was on the rear side of the sign 10 feet downhill. The throat shot at Z220 was supposed to hit JFK in the head and kill him. But this bullet dropped 8 inches too low. Umbrella Man's job was to check out JFK's head as he passed and signal for more shots from the grassy knoll if needed. His companion, a Cuban seen with a walkie-talkie, had that option to call for more JFK shots as well. Plenty of witnesses saw Umbrella Man pumping his umbrella up and down even though that was censored from Zapruder.
      If you look at the Willis 5 photo, you will see Zapruder had a straight-line view of JFK's head and limousine going under the Stemmons sign. In other words, Zapruder did indeed film JFK and his car going by. But in the Zapruder film as hoaxed, the sign is enlarged three- or four-fold to cover up JFK as he is being shot. JFK's transit time behind the sign was only 0.77 seconds, and that is not enough time for any assassin to work a rifle bolt that fast. Zapruder thus proves there was at least a second JFK assassin. The Stemmons sign is big enough to cover up about a fourth of JFK's car (from Zapruders position of reference) yet the faking of the Stemmons sign to huge enlargement appears to let the sign cover up almost the full length of the JFK limousine at Zapruder frame 204. To complete the JFK assassination cover up, the conspirators couldn't afford to let people see JFK actually being shot in the shoulder at Z206 and the throat at Z220. Literal cover-up by faking Zapruder.
      If you look at Z220 in Costella Combined Edit or similar, you will see the upper right corner of the Stemmons sign has a slight flat spot. In the frames before and after, this fake enlarged sign was cut and pasted with more care and the upper right corner is fully rounded. At Z155 you can see the yellow car's front tire is suddenly insanely thick, and the yellow cars floats off the pavement by about a foot. Z155 is when the commence-fire shot was fired from the roof of the Records Building to let all the sniper teams know it was time to begin shooting, even if people were having radio trouble. This bullet aimed at the pavement was pyrotechnic, to be distinctive, and issued forth multi-colored sparks when it hit. A companion pyrotechnic cease-fire bullet was shot into the pavement at the foot of the grassy knoll, once JFK's head was seen to have exploded by the spotters inside Zapruder's offices at sixth floor Dal-Tex building. Zapruder spent the half-hour before noon Nov. 22 encouraging everybody "Get out, get out, we all have a presidential parade to go see! Everybody out!" That way the management crew and radiomen and snipers could start setting up right after noon.
      In case Zapruder's camera failed, across the street was Babushka Lady filming the same scene. Both knew ahead of time where to position themselves. Curious how Babushka Lady never stepped forward for her fame and her million dollars. Curious how Dan Marvin, at Green Beret sniper training school at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, saw the Babushka Lady's film in sniper training class. After the movie was played and the lights came up, the instructor told everybody "This is a perfect example of how to conduct an urban sniper assassination." A little later, a CIA agent solicited Dan Marvin to murder Lt. Cmdr. William Bruce Pitzer inside Bethesda hospital because he was a "disloyal security risk." In reality, Pitzer had true untampered film of the JFK autopsy which, if it got out, would prove JFK was shot from the front as well as the rear. Marvin declined the offer and it was taken care of by someone else. Marvin has a clue it was one of his fellow Green Berets.
      Beverly Oliver falsely claimed several years later to be Babushka Lady (like the false claim about Umbrella Man's identity) however Babushka Lady shows up on photo stills crossing Elm St. to get to the grassy knoll right after JFK was shot, and she was an old biddie in her sixties, maybe Mrs. Zapruder. Oliver however was a nubile young 17-year old who loved to show off her abundant hair and her ample curves.

Earlier I watched the documentary ''Poisoned - a documentary about Russia's assassinations using poison'' , and when Anna Politkovskaja spoke about how bullets were out of fashion and people were apathetic to people simply being shoot, I could picture Putin watching her interview and thus he decided to murder her by a bullet, instead of poison (she had been poisoned earlier but survived). Another interesting date ifor a message is the birthday to the founder of the Cheka, Felix Dzerzhinsky, September 11th, it's also interesting how his birthday was celebrated in back 2001.

    David Sanchez Morales was a key player in the JFK assassination and other CIA operations. He was being summoned to testify to the U.S. Senate as of May 1978, so he was invited to a reunion of the good-old-boys network to have some drinks and backslapping and reminiscences of the good old days in Washington DC on May 5, 1978 with his CIA buddies. On the plane back to Arizona, he felt weird and ill at ease. It was worse on May 6 and by May 7 he had had a heart attack. The ambulance took an hour to arrive, and the attendants refused to give him oxygen. His hospital room was ringed by sheriff's deputies so nobody could get to him to get it right from the horse's mouth what had happened (either with the JFK assassination or how he had been done in as a guy who would be like the movie "D.O.A" from 1949, expecting to die and now maybe willing to talk). On the third day, May 8, 1978, he was in such rough shape his wife was persuaded to allow discontinuation of life support. As the case of Markov illustrates, ricin usually kills in about 4 days. But with Morales he, being a big guy, looks like he got a double dose and died on the third day.

    Whomever was responsible for his death was quite sophisticated. I spoke with the person who did the analysis of the pellet that was removed from his body during the autopsy. It was a platinum sphere, very tiny, with several holes. It contained traces of Ricin, a toxin derived from Castor beans. Whomever made that hollow sphere had very sophisticated technology in order to manufacture it as it was very precise and well made.

    Good documentary, thank you. Any murder is awful. Yet I disagree with the statement that Markov was an innocent man. I have experienced the Cold War and if you did the things Markov did, you were guilty in the eyes of the communist regimes. Perhaps hard to imagine nowadays, yet that is how it was back than.

    I am disgusted with the sentences of such killers and the words towards the uk journalist to stop disturbing them cause they were old. You know what they are-killers and no matter their age they shouldn’t be left unpunished cause their age. Unfortunately for now Bulgarian government wouldn’t say or admit anything cause in fact people in government have past with communism and real suppressed anti communists didn’t have access to serve in the government to punish and expose the crimes made.

    Apparently journos, nationalists other than those approved by autocratic governments, and other free-thinking people run higher risks of repressions than ordinary everyday persons. That probably explains why people in autocracies learnt long ago to keep their mouths shut, and not criticize governments. Murders and slave labour in Siberia were punishments for noncompliance. Ukrainian history of the 20th century has countless examples, in the millions or 10s of millions. 19th and other times including the present time also. Therefore the attempts to break away from autocratic regimes.
