    Have been watching Brad and Kyle for a couple years now. Average was at 167 and over two seasons I am at 185 currently. They make the game a little easier to understand. My biggest roadblock to get to 200 average has been ball speed. I got the slow ball speed down, but when I need to change angles and play with a faster ball speed I struggle. I recommend their channel to anyone who is trying to improve at bowling.

      I've bowled a heavy 14lb ball at about 13-14mph it's a little slower than average, but have been able to average 220 at my peak. I would say in general, sometimes it's not about speed and more about consistency and picking up all your spares. I recall breaking 200 was pretty difficult for me, but once you do it its you'll find the another barrier at 220 or 225, and so forth. It sort of the general evolution of your own personal game with the sport. Enjoy it.

For anyone struggling out there... practice with purpose, video record your practice, and if you can, take a few coaching lessons. And two huge changes to my game was staying inside and under the ball for that strong hand position.

    Ahhh. So nice to hear someone explain the simplicity’s of slowing it down. I am 57 and am so far behind in bowling. Got sick and bowling totally changed for the years I was out. I taught kids and adults to bowl since I was 15. Everybody wanted a gimmick or a trick. Answer. Would be. Try slowing it down. Never sunk in. Now you can just go to one of your 30 bags and grab another ball. But it seems like doing that just adds so much more head games amongst yourself to figure out.

  • @sleep-paralys1s
    @sleep-paralys1s Před 2 lety +10

    Side note: with ball speed, the speeds you see on TV are generally 1.5-2mph faster, because the system used is measuring off the hand. On the scoreboard, it is measuring down lane. So 19 on tour is actually about 17mph

    • @christiancantrell3492
      @christiancantrell3492 Před 2 lety

      I've read on multiple articles, etc, that the difference is more along the lines of 3 mph. Hard to know exactly. But, this much is known, the speed that is shown on Fox track, and TV is actually measured right off their hands. Whereas the speed that we amateur, house bowlers, is measured much further down lane, where, if thrown properly, has skidded through the oil etc, and has lost a decent amount of energy. Using 2 or 3 mph difference to get an idea of what the PBA guys are actually doing tells us that they still throw the ball on avg quite a bit faster than most of us.

    • @MikeRichman
      @MikeRichman Před 2 lety +1

      This is so important to keep in mind. Also, the line you play has a huge effect on ball speed down lane. On any house shot, you'll maintain more speed inside. The crazy thing is where this interacts with rev rate and equipment. What I've seen witth pearl surface is, you can get a stronger drive late if you throw it faster on the central oil than if you try to ram it down the outside -- because even though the ball's faster down lane, it also retains rev rate down lane.

    I have never taken lesson and just play around with friends when i go bowling. I have recently tried to learn how to hook the ball and I always thought throwing it hard with a lot of RPM would get it to hook more. I didn't realize that I was not giving the ball time to grip and hook on its own. I usually throw the ball between 20 and 22 MPH. ( this is just me throwing it straight down the lane aiming for the center pin. thank you for putting this video together and helping me understand what i need to work on to try and hook the ball better.

    Another great video guys. I see men sometimes when bowling throw a straight ball as hard as they can which tends to cause the pins to blow past the ones behind them. They think if you throw a slow hook it makes you weak or something but you get the pins to "socialize" better because of the ball rotation. To me it is not a ball speed pissing contest. You guys make a good point about slowing down and also hand position instead of just moving left or changing balls. I hope to practice different hand positions to see if I can learn this skill depending on the oil. Thanks guys.

    The rev rate conversation resonates with me. When I first started bowling consistently, I wanted rev rate. I was like 18, I think, and didn't have a ton of rev rate, but still averaged I'd say 190ish, but I was always trying to rev it. So much so I couldn't support a ball because my wrist was jacked up. Bowled two handed for about six months because it took the pressure off, and my man who drills my equipment, former touring pro Marv Sargent (I appreciate you immensely Marv), said that bowling two handed was the best thing that happened to me for rev rate. He said when I went back to traditional, my rev rate was night and day compared to how it was. Now... I want to lose the revs hahahaha. Revs are great, but they can definitely complicate things when they don't need to be complicated. Now I've been trying to tone it down and use the revs when I need it, not all the time, focusing more on angles and roll. If I could go back and give younger me advice, it would have been to focus on angles and roll, not revs. Thank you for the vid, gentlemen!

    So how do you adjust ball speed? How do I speed up or slow down without getting out of balance and timing?

  • @Skyfighter64
    @Skyfighter64 Před 2 lety +3

    At my current budget, I have 3 bowling balls. I have 1: Ebonite Destiny Pearl. 2: Rotogrip hustle SAY (used) and 3: Brunsick T-zone (very used). All 15lbs. I have a relatively slow ball speed at 14.5mph, and I don't like the feel of inserts so my RPM's are probably stupid low. On fresh, good quality League pattern, I usually start fairly well with my heels on the first dot to the left of center, and my Destiny Pearl should cross the first arrow to the right of center. With single board adjustments over the course of a league night, I can usually keep this ball in play for about 1-1/2 to 2 games.
    Unfortunately, the alley I bowl at seems to have changed the oil settings for the league I bowl on, so the lanes are a lot drier than what they were last year. On these lanes I can use my (pin above the finger holes) Hustle SAY in a similar shot setup, though the curve is very different, a little later and a lot stronger, I think), and get through 1-1/2 games using that ball.
    For the last game of League night, I typically have to use my T-zone spare ball, starting 5 boards right of center, and rolling over the 10-board at the arrows, which will still hit the pocket for either 9 or a strike most of the time (unless I just straight screw it up), though last week, the lanes were so dry that I had to start with my heels on the center dot, and roll my ball over the 15 board.
    My current average is ~178 at the moment.
    Speaking of ball speed, I abuse ball speed to get anything on the left side of the lane... I call these shots "lazy spares" since I don't put anything extra on the ball, just let my curve drag the ball into the 3, 6, 7 and 8 pins almost without fail.

    The issue with number three is the recreational house bowler may have a difficult time repeating the release time after time. "Get more around the ball" is good in theory, but without a LOT of practice and possibly effective coaching, the release will not be repeated and the ball reactions on the lane will vary. Then when the bowler makes a lane adjustment with his or her target, it is not going to work because the error was in the release, not in the ball reaction to the lane condition.

    norm duke have a slow rev rate and straight down the 2-3 arrow and he is the the I grew up with in the 80"s watching his style and still to this day it's very affective using his style of throw.

      I think none of that really matters. It is all about what YOU can duplicate repeatedly. I think consistency is the most important thing you can do regardless of anything else. If reving it works better for some, they should get a balls, walking speed, etc to match.

    Hey so i have a question, i cant throw a heavier ball one handed. Like a 11 is perfect. What can i do to go higher ?. I work out but shit still heavy lol

      It seems more of a muscled swing. 2 handed 1 handed you want to have a free and easy swing using gravity or rotation. Throwing 15 from 11 is not going to be easy since it will adjust your timing due to the ball dropping faster because of gravity.

    I can say one problem I have is adjusting to the lane, I’ll try moving boards but sometimes it doesn’t improve. Next time I bowl im try implementing speed adjusting and hand placement changing. I usually rely on getting my hand around the ball for revs.

    I had a ball that was supposed to hook. Just found out after 2 years that the thumb hole was WAY too big and giving me bad habits. So I’m in the process of relearning bowling. Thanks guys

    I’ve noticed that the ball is being put down left of center, and then hooking back from right to left. I’m always scared of tossing it into the gutter, so I lay it down near the second arrow from the right. Doing this, my ball doesn’t hook, but rather “curves” into the pocket. Needless to say, I’m not a high scoring bowler. Any tips on changing my approach to a hook rather than a curve?

    how can i get rid of the fear of opening my shoulder up to get that nice high backswing??
    i'm always afraid that if i do it the ball will just slam into the lane.. (That's why i bowl two handed.. too afraid to do a proper backswing with a lot of power.. xD)

    The bad thing about this is if you have a hight Rev, ball speed is very important belmo has an average of 15 to 16mph! As well as ej Tackett and both have a very huge rev rate!
