    i belive mythbusters did an episode on this. the muscles only have enough fuel for a few contractions before its done. it builds up lactic acid and uses the chemicals that allow it to move.

    Great showcase! My dissertation project is to develop a new type of engine so that people can use chicken they buy for dinner to drive them home! It will have amazing environmental impact since the chicken is already there on a shelf anyway so why not use it to save fuel!

    I work at a butcher shop. Very fresh meat can definitely move (possibly just from salt), but as others have said, without the support of the rest of the body they never recover from fatigue. You would need blood pumping through them.

    The ham slice wouldn't have worked because it's cut the wrong way -- It sliced the fibers, so any contraction would make the slice thinner.

    you can use a wine glass as the top roller of a van der graf generator. use a couple of zip ties round the stem as bearings, attach it sideways to a smoothie bottle top or a bit of plastic pipe or whatever. i suppose you would want to make it with a 3D printer. you might want to ring in monsieur furze for the charge collector

      In a real experiment with a fresh frog Gastrocnemius muscle yes it does.

    Tip: It doesn't work on either sausages or ham because they're not an entire muscle piece.
    Sausages is made out of mince, so the muscle structure/tissue is completely destroyed and won't work.
    Meanwhile, ham is just a thin layer of the muscle tissue. It may work, but it is very unlikely.

    Isn't this actually possible with certain reptile or amphibian legs like frogs? I know you can get them to constrict with salt, but I wonder if you could alternate electric fields with the right kind of electrolyte solution to get them to work like is joked here.

    could you imagine some sort of metal exoskeleton with organic muscles that you could wear. think of something from the crisis game but with chicken muscles, you'd have to carry the fuel for them too or give it some sort of stomach, it would be like climbing inside of a body builder carcass. or muscle legs attached to a bicycle that pedal for you, you'd just feed it a meal everyone and then and off you go again!
