This is the drums-only version of Tool-The Grudge. I've had a few folks ask me to post this. As I mentioned in the description of the original video, learning this song was a great journey - there are so many subtleties and nuances that I never knew existed. It wasn't until I really peeled back the layers while learning it that I gained a true appreciation of Danny Carey's drum arrangement.

There might be a couple more pure, raw talented drummers in the universe, but Danny Carey is the most intelligent, and innovative... hands down. The man invents rhythms in his sleep.

At 0:30 I played a series of 5 strokes repeatedly: r-l-r-l-l
With the emphasis on one and two of every other measure.
It becomes more complex at 0:42 with: flam tap-r-l-l-r-l-r-l-r (each measure). So you're essentially playing two double strokes with your left hand then a double stroke with your right hand that straddles the boundary of the measure.
what about the part at 0:15 i can't figure it out for the life of me

Danny Carey is one of those drummers that writes parts in which you really have to think about what you are doing when you are playing them. Great cover

The studio has been delayed a little due to some zoning issues I'm having with the city. But I'm anxious to build it and start recording again!
Played my guitar along to this backing track. Felt like I was in a real band.
Writing chops for these songs in the studio is one thing... Writing them KNOWING that fans will be hanging on EVERY beat and note... Is the kind of sadism only a master could enjoy!

:))) it really shouldn't. Drums are the most powerful and loudest part of a song. They create the impact of the explosion and the bass and guitars are the aftermath.
@@Cymanytb There's no "more impactful" here. The music has 4 components and taking one out hurts the song. Taking 3 completely kills it. If the drums were THAT huge, it wouldn't sound that empty, would it.
@@darkySp well yeah cause it's a CZcams video. If you were to see them in person, Danny carey playing drums will move your kidney stones. Drums are the most powerful part of the song.
@@darkySp But I agree, there is no the grudge if there are only drums. it's just 25% of the song. Also, here I agree that Johnkew has made the drums in his cover way mellower and softer than Danny's but that's just because he didn't have Danny's kit and sound. Now, tho if you check the last cover of invincible and drums only, you can notice how powerful the drums are there (still not as powerful as Danny's but close enough) :))
This one seems to be so simple to me, at first, but there'are so many nuances that could make dozens of different songs. I'm not a drummer though, can hardly imagine what it is to learn such stuff. Great job, love your videos and hope you won't stop making new ones!

Thanks man, and the Paiste hats are holding up fine. They are actually one of the last remaining pieces from my original kit that I got back in 1988. So they have REALLY held up!

This is awesome! I enjoy jamming the guitar part with all the tool songs but this one is great because its drums only. Its great practice especially in a ten count. Any more tool drums only would be cool. Thanks man. Awesome job by the way. Danny would be proud!

Hey bud, good to hear from you. I like the drum mix on this one too - I'm finally getting a sound I like after more than a year of mixing drums. The funny thing is that each recording is a new challenge in mixing. It's not like you can copy your settings from a previous recording - they all sound different for whatever reason. A few things... 1 - This song in particular highlights how drumming, in addition to leading, both sets and expands dynamic boundaries 2 - Well, done sir...a few slight timing inaccuracies but since you're clearly a better drummer than I am I should really just shut the hell up about it. 3 - during 8:09-8:13 your facial expression looks a lot like Garth drumming on 'Wayne's World'. 4 - Thanks for sharing this. It made my life a little better.

It's good. You recited the song well and the drums sound nice.
However, a lot of the time it seems like the consistency of your hits is being sacrificed by how hard your trying to play the drums. It looks like it's making you tense and is therefore ruining the fluidity of the patterns and particularly the faster parts like at 8.08. Just loosen up and use your wrists more and keep relaxed.

I'm using mostly Catalina drums - the only Renown I'm using is the 10 inch tom.

I wonder if you have had arm injuries during your drumming time, if you pause the video @ 4:57 your arms are really really bent.... If it works well for you, then (of course) continue this way, but it just looks really "unhealthy". From my point of view, your bass drum sounds dead, I guess it could have a lot more punch ;) nevertheless, thank you for this video, I'm currently practising that song and this helps a lot, keep it up
First of all, thank you for this amazing cover! I listened to it over and over and it helped me a lot figuring out some parts of the song. I used your cover and another "bass only" cover I found on CZcams (czcams.com/video/KygcEnesn0M/video.html), put them together to have a Drum and Bass starting track on which I added the guitar. I'm not trying to make the promotion of my work here but since I don't know how to contact you directly, I'm using this comment space to ask if this is Ok with you (using your material in this way). The bass guy (Leo) already gave me his "Ok" to use his video for this and I'm writing to you to ask if that would be possible. Of course, I would give you all the credits for the drum track.
