  • New Farmhand Builds A Joel Salatin Style Chicken Brooder!
Today we want ya'll to meet our new farmhand, Jame Welborn! Jame is taking on a big project and building us a new megabrooder for our pastured poultry chickens.
This is an 8x8 brooder similar to ones that Joel Salatin has used at Polyface farm in the past.
Check out some of the features and take a tour of our new brooder!

Exactly. The other farm Jame works at sent a set of them over for us to use. I think that will help a bunch.
Should have told them no and then I would have had a great excuse to buy a set. 😆

Joel Salatin mentioned something about keeping it off the ground to protect from rats. Apparently they squeeze in real small spaces, but you have a little off the ground they have to take the time to climb, which is when the cats do their job.

Nice to see him be able to build it from a picture. Nice looking brooder, it would be nice to have it on a set of wheels so you can move it easily. Make life easier to clean out or to put chicks on pasture.
I couldn’t tell, how much over lap did your shingles have? I believe you need an inch and half to keep water from running inside and down your 2x4’s, otherwise water will pool up and rot out your boards. With it being outside you may also need 2x4’s at least every 24” to help carry the snow load of the roof, the basic load.

    Couple of thoughts...
The sectioned fold down front is brilliant. I wish I had done that with the ones I built. I had planned on a small fold up section on the side, but your big fold down on the front is much better..
One thing I did find too be hard that you might run into is trying to corral the chicks too the opening. Ours was a bit too tall, deep and wide to just reach in and grab them. Yours is much bigger. It may be hard to force them ask over to where you want them. If you have or find an easy way, I'd love to know.
One thing I really regretted and plan to fix for this year, and that you may want to consider doing, it's lining the bottom with linoleum or vinyl flooring. It would make cleaning the old bedding out, so much easier!!
One last thing I noticed is, sometimes for warmth, we would cover one of the fold up hardware cloth lids with a cut out sheet of insulation. Even with nothing on, but especially with one side covered, we had lots of problems with dust and particulate in the air inside the brooder. Even with premium low dust shavings, it was enough to concern me. I would suggest throwing an exhaust fan on one of those top side areas too draw dust and dander and what not out of the brooder.
Just some thoughts. Either way, it looks great!!
    Thanks,
    Richard

You need to cover the inside framing on the drop down doors or you are gonna have a mess when you go to scape out the litter.
Also you need to give those flip up top lids framing support or they will warp and also pull out the fasteners on the hinges.
The hold up support that holds the lid open. Notch the bottom so it locks into place on the wall frame top sill. It will prevent it from being knocked off by accident with someone with half their body leaning in and causing a injury.

@@SheratonParkFarms I thought We as viewers watching though the many commercials during your videos help keep your lights on. My mistake. I’ve watched y’all for a long time, included y’all in my nightly prayers…but now I see it all comes down to money. I get it. And I’ll move along. Because y’all don’t need people like me that just watch the amazing content you put out. I really thought y’all cared about people more than just “keeping your lights on”. (Edit: just to let everyone know that we are referring to the small brooding plans that are for sale in the amount of $4.99. ) I personally would donate money to y’all if I felt it would help you personally as a farmer. But if it is just about the business of making money then I’m sadly disappointed because I really thought y’all stood for more than that with your channel.

250 broiler chicks to 3wks feathered out size in that space???. You sure about that!?! I am not seeing it and I have a good bit of experience raising broilers. 8x8 minus wall thickness is what 60sqft. That's only ¼sqft per chicken. That's fine for maybe a week. Those broiler chicks are not small at 3 wks. That would be standing room only and a absolutely stupid amount of manure in that spacing. For me that size is good for 100-150 chicks to 3 wks max. Sorry but anything less that ½sqft is a very bad idea. Just think about it. Each chick at ½sqft has a 6"x6" square of total space. But you still have to put in feeders waterer.
Sorry but 100 chicks is all I would EVER have grown out to 3 wks in an 8x8 outside frame size brooder. Increasing that to 2.5x that amount is foolish.
