- Pastured Poultry - Brooder Emergency
We have an issue on the farm. Some of our pastured poultry chicks have arrived early and we are now faced with a brooder space issue. We have to come up with a solution for brooder space in a hurry because there are even more chicks coming and its getting cold outside tonight.
Plans are to use a Suscovich style chicken tractor as a temporary brooder to house some of our older chicks until they are ready to go out onto pasture.

Wow Chuck, your going to be super busy 8 weeks from now processing all those tasty birds....
Sounds like you have a lot of work ahead of you. I really enjoy watching your channel the wife and I bought some land last July and we are just now getting around to transforming our homestead into a functional small farm. Thank you for putting up your videos they really help and inspire me. Have a great day.
By now you know how it worked out. Post dated goos luck. I’m sure it all worked out. Love the business model your creating for your retirement. I’m so gonna follow in your footsteps. Brings life back to your lives. Thanks
praying it works well for the chicks
Thanks. Appreciate y’all watching
I accidentally saw the ‘hatch date’ for our meat chicks as 4/16, but it was actually 4/6!!! Ten days earlier than I thought! Thankfully everything was ready, but it was a big surprise when they emailed ‘your chicks are on the way’!
I’ve been playing musical brooders all spring it seems. One last switcharoo this coming Thursday and I think we are all sorted out. 🤣
It’s a challenge to keep them all straight for us. Saundra says it’s getting out of hand. 🤣🤣
Amazingly talented man!
Nicely done 👍👍👍Thanks for sharing
I put chicks straight from hatchery (day old) into tractor w/2 lights, a couple handfuls hay under lights (so they don't bunch in corners), no wood chips -they start eating grass right away. Put tarps on both sides. Don't worry about holes in tarps (ventilation)
Maybe you could add buckets of hot boiling water so the chicks can cuddle up to it for a few hours. ( buckets with lids of course )
I had to do the same thing today, musical brooders because of chickens i forgot are coming this week due to the imbargo in February.
Embargo? Can you elaborate on this? Interested in farming chickens and it seems like this would be important information.
@@jasonrandom the usps put an embargo (ban) on shipping live animals. My shipment was delayed and I got put on the new list for may... really messed things up
Kind a like a doggie door and a home basically you just add a little door you can open that you can funnel them right into a box when you need to move them that way you don’t have to pick them up one at a time chase him down and all that business just having funneled into the box move the box funnel them out I think you’ll be a better situation for you
If this works good and it's looks good you may have found a great way to fast track the chick's god bless
That should be fine I keep my babies in the same chicken house as my hens I just add a light low to the ground. But I do put a small wall up to separate them
So far this seems to be working great. Never though about chickens of offer EMT ages in there. Great idea!!
Just build a 4 sided area in the barn hang a light over it and fix it so no draft . Smaller warmer areas are better then large cool draft . I wouldn't do that and I have a little experience over 50years .
Is it possible to repair that tarp with duct tape?
Could certainly patch it.
Duct tape fixes everything.
Indeed it does. 🤣
I think you would save yourself so much work if you would put little flap doors on the routers and even the metal tub if you cut a little door on the bottom where you can put a box right up to the door and funnel them into the box that’ll save you a ton of time and management
We did the same thing in early March. It worked well. I’m curious about an Ohio brooder in the suscovich tractor. ✌🏻❤️
Don’t have any experience with those. I bet it would work fine.
Is lowes a sponsor? If not they should be!
Do you still do the classes? I looked on your website but didn't see any.
We don’t have anything scheduled right now.
What are your plans for the geese and which breed are you getting? Pig question: what ration do you feed, non GMO, conventional, organic?
Random question but what type or shrub or trees is that at the end of the video. The purple and white flowering ones.
How do you like the color yield chickens? Was thinking of getting some of them next go around. Will be processing 40 Cornish cross next weekend
Love them. Been very happy with how they grow out and do on pasture.
Why didn't you just allow the chickens on grass instead of pine shavings
Wanted to add shavings for extra warmth and to make sure they stayed dry.
How old do you put out the Cornish x? with all of this poultry coming to your farm you’ll be pumping a lot of great videos out.
Usually about 2-3 weeks depending on weather and how feathered out they are.
@@SheratonParkFarms Awesome. I had them free range last year but only a handful ever ventured outside. This year I’m going to force them out ha. God bless thanks again
I think u need more
😳😳
I was thinking the same thing! If they’re doing this good with all the extras, why not add more! 😊🤷🏼♀️
