    QB's part is the traditional song with some subtle improvs, Umair's part is the part that was added as part of the new arrangement.
    Although people have made fun of Umair, I really enjoyed his enthusiasm.

    it is fusion of one song in two versions....
    1) the girl sings in a folk style
    2) the man sings in pop/western style.
    The lyrics r also manipulated.

    @Volcanichead Před 2 lety +2

    Hi Ken, the things you are noted about two songs etc, you are spot on. What Coke Studio has been doing is that they pick up one of the old or folk song and create mix-up with the either a newer song or just add more lines to it. You clocked it really well.
    So in this case Umair is singing the "New" part of the song and in newish or western style if you like and Quaratul Ain is singing the folk part.

    I adore your authentic reactions, especially when you’re reacting at real time to our beloved Coke Studio and Nescafé Basement sessions.
    Coke Studio and Nescafé Basement basically combine the best of both worlds - the east and the west - while keeping it more traditional in terms of delivery so that it retains the essence of our eastern (and quite ancient) way of Sufi Mysticism.
    This is not just mine but my then-4 year old’s favourite tune (she’s 6 now!). It combines Umair’s more rock-influenced genre of music and vocals with QB’s effortlessly eastern delivery. All us Pakistanis had fun with Jaswal’s energy, which just contrasted sharply with QB’s calm demeanour, and memes were overflowing.
    Do check out “Makkay Gayan” by Fariha Pervez. It’s her rendition of a very old Sufi “Qalaam” - the act of expressing, by force or under pressure, a declaration - by a renowned Sufi poet, Baba Bulleh Shah. I always wished it were longer. I hope you enjoy it as much as I still do.

    In this coke studio song, what they tried to experiment with was infusing a Rockstar singer Umair Jaswal in a traditional music setting and a classical-styled singer type QB. I loved the song!
    To summarize this song, this is what you get when western music meets Pakistani classic. IMO

    @Ken Lavigne;
    Hi Ken; Your analysis is correct, these are the two songs that have been mixed here. The male singer is singing separate "Urdu" poetry. While the female singer is singing "Punjabi folk song". Most of the women in the "Punjab province of Pakistan" gather and sing and dance at weddings and other occasions of happines, especially in the "Potohar region" of northern Punjab. This dance is called "Sami Dalna" in that area, and it is especially a women's dance.

    i totally agree with you about the growl thing, i always thought the same edit: ALSO you are correct, it is two diff songs, they just blended - the sammi meri waar is actually a sad song, and they added the other stuff to make it into a love song. (the original was supposedly a traditional folk song, based on a mother whose daughter either died or ran away )

I'd recommend another coke studio song called Chha Rahi Kali Ghata, by Hina Nasrullah and Amanat Ali, Hina's performance in it is beautiful and features a lot of little intricate runs and melodic patterns which I think you'd appreciate!

    1. Quratulian baloch is one of the best singers of Pakistan. She is also REALLY short. I have met her in Virginia. She is standing very still probably cus she is standing on a stool... :-)
    2. this song is like a folk love song where the guy (husky rough voice) is professing his love to the woman (sweet, melodious voice) in a field of corn/cotton....
    I think the coke studio people tried to capture that essence putting carefree Umair against the perfectionist Qurat.
