I had no idea the new 40th ET was any different than the 35th besides the inclusion of that new special feature, so that was GREAT news to hear the transfer was better as well/it was on a BD100 vs just a BD66! 😁 And the Turbine Pitch Black was complete news to me! So now knowing that an Atmos track exists, I am beyond stoked to check it out, as I can only imagine how awesome it is!!
I also double dipped on the new Invasion of the Body Snatchers from Arrow for the packaging and special features, but I'd only assumed the transfer/encode would be better, but I hadn't watched it yet myself, so it was great to get detailed confirmation from you about the big improvements over the KL version!

The one 4k vs 4k that really frustrates me is the 4k Sony release of the Ghostbusters 1&2 steel book. They did their Dolby Vision regrade and put it in a super limited, super expensive box set that sold out very fast. They NEED to put the newly remasterd Dolby Vision graded versions back out in a more general version. Its one of my favorite action/comedy/syfi/horror movie ever!
I hope we get a new 35th anniversary version of Terminator 2 with a brand new restoration in 2026 for obvious reasons.
On therms that J Cameron doesn't go anywhere near restoration process with his Ai abomination
I do hope also that adding Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos to T2 could be a reason for them to go back for a new transfer
It will never, ever happen. Or if it does it will look even worse for purists. Cameron is invoking his inner Lucas.

I’ve gotten most of the Sony rereleases. Just have to get stand by me and you convinced me to pickup MIB.
Starship Troopers is another fantastic Sony Dolby Vision steelbook upgrade that I double dipped on. The improvement in picture quality was very noticeable, and the steelbook artwork is among the best in my collection. I ordered Invasion of the Body Snatchers from your link, looking forward to it!

Thank you James for this video. I wasn't going to pick up Blackhawk Down, because I have a Sony UBX800M2 4K Blu-ray player that I have Dolby Vision turned on and figured I did not need to upgrade. Thank for letting us know about the increased bit rate. For those who have the same Sony player I have, there are a few tweaks to the settings, which virtually eliminates the freezing issues.
What are your settings?
@@TPRErik First of all I want to give credit to The Original Fuzz's video, "Sony 4KPlayer Freezing & Skipping? Try these Settings / Back to Basics #5," for this information.
I have three Sony UBP-X800M2 players in the house, including a region free one and all three have these settings. Go to Settings, then Screen Settings:
Step 1 - Turn off 4K Upscale Setting
Step 2 - Scroll down to almost the end to Cinema Conversion Mode and change to Video.
One reminder, if the power goes out or the player is reset to the factory settings, you will have to go back to change these settings.
Seems like Dolby Vision is the clear winner on the 4K format.

Sadly, I have an issue these days, although not with you or your work. I'm retired now, and on a fixed income and consequently only a small amount of that income is disposable. So many, that is, most, of these new, limited, releases will not be affordable for me before they join the even more costly after-market. I hate that SONY is putting out just a few copies and then saying screw you, it's now or never. Oh well. My problems are my own and I can always dream. I am able to get some stuff; I managed to score a new box of the Arrow Warriors release! So that's something.

Quick question for you as a collector or for anybody really on the channel, do you have any advice for protecting the discs inside the Avatar Collectors Edition set? I am concerned that over time that those cardboard sleeves will damage the discs and wondered if you had any suggestions. I was looking at some CD type inner sleeves but heard that they can mark discs as well. I am not a fan of the DigiPack packaging at all as you can probably tell.

It's amazing and a shame at the same time. I'm sad I got the wrong Carlito's Way. At the same time I hate that they have separate versions or only Limited Edition releases that are more money. It's amazing that these films are getting multiple releases though that shows the market is there. Long Live Physical Media

I have read too many inaccurate comments that have said that 35th and 40th are basically the same. I love ET and just assumed the noise and grain instability were the best we could get, glad that is not the case and I will eventually upgrade to the new addition.

Our Projector doesn't do Dolby Vision - do the upgraded discs make a bigger difference w/o DV engaged? Great movie choices!
Yes because of higher bit rate, less image fluctuations and alot more stable. The only thing is the colors and depth tend to be less drastically with only HDR10.

Man I had to use your affiliate link for pitch black with the Dolby atmos! One reason I didn’t upgrade by blu ray of pitch black is because the didn’t remaster the audio in Dolby atmos or dts X, which this movie is perfect for. Now I have it coming, even though it’s more pricey coming from overseas, it’s well worth it. I just found your channel and have already used three affiliate links across two videos. You’re going to have me spending tons on great discs.

I've only double dipped on Leon the Professional, I think the import edition had Dolby Vision (I watched a comparison on CZcams).

I really enjoyed this video. Will you be reviewing the Kino Lorber 4k 1956 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers? I received my copy last week, and I must say, it's the first time that I prefer the Blu-Ray disc over the 4k.
Maybe I received a bad copy, because the 4k image was darker than the Blu-Ray image and it didn't seem to be any sharper. Very strange.

These things I asked above can make a massive difference in what you see with each 4K especially with the differences in Dolby Vision vs HDR10 layers!!

When you find the time, could you please quickly check out the Olive Films Blu-Ray or the Kino Lorber Blu-Ray supplied with the 4k version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers? If you do a side by side with either Blu-Ray comparing them to the 4k version, you'll see why I'm so disappointed with the image quality of the 4k.

Dracula on Steelbook with DV is far better than the original HDR10 release.

I have heard it's Second Sight's version, since the director Robert Eggers apparently had nothing to do with that initial/standard release, and supposedly the blacks were crushed, and/or the HDR was wrong or something... but the good news was that he directly assisted with the Second Sight transfer, and so that's widely considered the definitive version! 😁

I really wonder if the Stand By Me release in the Nordics is the old or better version. It's coming out now, but since there is no mention of Dolby Vision it might be the old one still (it was never released here previously). Sometimes we DO get the better version without any mention of Dolby Vision or anything else on the back, but it's frustrating that this information isn't available or can't be trusted. We get both the standard and steelbook simultaneously too, which makes it even harder to judge. I'd rather get local versions with subtitles to be able to watch movies with others who need them, but won't support inferior versions if a better one is available.

The most worthwhile 4K double-dip I’ve seen is The Fifth Element. The UK’s Studio Canal release is SO MUCH better than the US Sony release. Playing scenes back to back, I couldn’t believe how much of an upgrade it was. The Sony appears to have some shots that were upscaled and artificially sharpened, while those same shots appear like natural 4K scans of the film on the Studio Canal release. I was shocked to see it with my own eyes.
@@Leebabinshave you seen both disc in person or are you basing that on screenshots? Because I thought the same until I did some scene by scene comparisons of the discs myself and then it was no question that the US disc was going to be retired and never watched again.
@@Leebabins I hear ya. I picked up the Studio Canal version because I wanted the steelbook, but based on comparison shots I’d looked at, I expected to swap the discs out and put the Sony discs into the UK steelbook. I ended up just totally retiring the Sony version altogether once I did the comparison for myself.
I'm not sure where you're getting information that the older Waterworld is HDR10. It shows as Dolby Vision on my LG TV and is also labeled ULTRA HD Premium on the case, which seems to be consistent with Dolby Vision.
I just picked up The Dark Knight Trilogy 4k and I am blown away.

nah...won't double dip-I've spent enough money going from VHS/laserdisk/DVDs/blurays and then 4K and now better 4k! wow...Some studios just don't care about physical media...I have been collecting a few 4K but I have slow down a bit...can't wait for Aliens and the Abyss...thanks for the hard work!

the main problem for me is that arrow video or special releases doesnt comes with lenguage options on subtitles. thats a big difference for non native speakers.
