“I just got me a brand new box of matches. And, what he knows, you ain’t had time to learn.” That was a supreme smack down. Her brand new box of matches is a new man, and he’s got what her old man doesn’t. One of these days is NOW. I loved Nancy Sinatra! We girls in the ‘60’s had some music by strong women to inspire us.

My best memory of this song is one is in the spring of 2001. My husband and I were working outside and we heard our son get in the shower; he was 13 at the time. The next thing we know that boy is belting out this song like he was in concert! We waited for the appropriate moment for giving applause and he thanked us…no embarrassment at all. He’s 33 now and still sings random songs from all eras and genres of music. ✌🏼♥️🎶

This song jump started the second phase of Nancy's career. She hooked up with producer and songwriter Lee Hazelwood shortly after divorcing her first husband Tommy Sands. Lee encouraged her to step out. He told her "You're not young and innocent anymore. You're a divorced woman. You've experienced life." or words to that effect. Lee originally wanted to sing this song himself, but Nancy told him it would not be appropriate for a man to sing it, so he gave it to her. Great performance and video. Nancy and Lee did several duets together including "Jackson", "Some Velvet Morning" and "Lady Bird."

Not once did I think of an army when hearing this song. But let me tell you this: When this song came out, I was at a shoe store one evening with my folks, and the song came on the radio in the store. And what was most on display at the store was not shoes, but go-go boots, which were all the rage when the song came out. Here is what Wikipedia says:
"Go-go boots are a low-heeled style of women's fashion boot first introduced in the mid-1960s. The original go-go boots, as defined by André Courrèges in 1964, were white, low-heeled, and mid-calf in height, a specific style which is sometimes called the Courrèges boot. Since then, the term go-go boot has come to include the knee-high, square-toed boots with block heels that were very popular in the 1960s and 1970s; as well as a number of variations including kitten heeled versions and colours other than white."

  • @beckygrant2258
    @beckygrant2258 Před 2 lety +1

I’m 65. This wasn’t played in Army movies till years later. Frank Sinatra was a teen idol for our mothers. They were called Bobby Soxers. Because they wore white Bobby Sox and black and white saddle shoes with their skirts. And let’s face it, he had a voice made of pure SILK! So beautiful. So sexy. We LOVED that he had a daughter who was in our generation who could also sing! And she was so pretty, too. But really, this song came out when women were pushing for more rights, more independence. And we were so tired of being treated badly by men. This song is about THAT! There were so many women getting divorced in the late 60’s/early 70’s….many of our mothers! Those boots gonna walk her right out the front door of her house, if he keeps lying and cheating on her…which so many men were doing back then.
Go watch the tv series Mad Men! That’s pretty close to what it was really like in the 60’s. Single women worked to find a man to marry. Then they quit and went home and had children. They couldn’t have both a career and a family. Then they just felt like brood mares. Men wanted to get promoted so they could get the key to the Playboy Club! So many men had mistresses! Women were stuck. They couldn’t get credit on their own, or buy houses. They couldn’t get on birth control pills without their husband’s permission. It took a few years before doctor’s would even prescribe the pill to single women! Anyway, when this song came out, it was one of those songs women liked because it was sort of an anthem. She was singing for all of us! And she was Frank Sinatra’s daughter, Nancy.
Frank was the most powerful celebrity in the country. If it weren’t for Frank, there would be no Las Vegas today! Vegas came about because Castro had taken over Cuba….America’s adult playground! So there was no sin city for adults to visit. So the Italian mob found Las Vegas…not too far from LA. But after the mobsters built those casino’s, no one came….till they offered Sinatra (he’s Italian) a share of one of the casino’s if he would perform a few times a year and talk his celebrity friends into performing there, too! Then JFK, then a Senator, showed up in VegasHe also was responsible for black artists being able to entertain. One of his best friends was Sammy Davis Jr. They wouldn’t even let Sammy in the front door. And he couldn’t stay at the hotel. He had to stay in the “colored” area of the city…till Frank threatened to stop performing. They complied! Pretty cool. Frank was so cool!

Yes, that is a dance move called The Pony! I had this 45 and did it before I ever saw this video. AND, she started following me on Twitter a few years ago! :) I consider her my big sister, since her dad and my dad were around the same age and both 1st generation Sicilian American sons. :) I adore her still!

I was a young teen when this song came out and I remember thinking that that woman was putting down the law to her man. I never looked at this song as anything close to a military vein to it. I want to thank you guys, I totally enjoy watching these reactions to my era of music, it does my old soul good to know that the younger generations are appreciating the quality of music that we had.

When I was a kid, this was my very first record, (yes, I’m that old!) a 45 that I had to ask my Dad to play on his stereo…nobody but Daddy touched the stereo!…I’d put on my white go go boots and my favorite mini dress and dance my little heart out! Thanks for playing this, I had a good laugh at you guys and my memories, oh those white go go boots!

The song was a big hit for many reasons. It had a great "hook" in it (the bass line), it was telling a familiar story, it was Frank Sinatra's daughter, and that famous last line of the song. You have to remember also, there were no music videos back then, the video you are watching was from her performing on some variety show of the time. The music of the studio recording was provided by the famous "wrecking crew" session musicians. Finally, this song came out in 1966, check out the GoGo dancers from The Ronettes Be My Baby from 1963. For a moment I thought it might have been the same group of dancers.

Even though The Beatles were at the height of their popularity, the year I was born saw this song as the #2 most popular of the year, and her dad had the #1. I couldn't have one of The Beatles' songs be huge; I got Frank and Nancy, which just makes me feel ancient...lol.

    Jamel,
You like this, you MUST check out “Bang, Bang” (Nancy Sinatra)
SO deep, SO dark, and the reason for it was the guitar.
(The ONLY instrument in the song)
The guitar player is the great Billy Strange!
(Member of the legendary WRECKING CREW, a tight knit group of session musicians that are on literally hundreds of hit songs)

This came out December 1965, I turned nine a month later. I don’t remember it until a couple years that. My dad was career Army and I never once thought it had anything to do with military. Go Go boots were all the rage and I wanted to be a Go Go dancer. All the different dance moves were in it as others have said. I knew them all by the age of 10.
