He was in a band called Heatmiser. they made post-punk believe it or not. Band broke around 95 when he decided to go solo. Elliott was a multi-instrumentalist and played pretty much every instrument in three of his first solo albums. Amazing guitarist and songwriter. Thanks for reaction!

absolutely love when people get into elliott. he would (pretty much mostly all the time) play every instrument in the album versions of his songs, but would perform with a band when he played the electric versions live. i highly recommend you look at either his fuji rock or bumbershoot festival shows, both from 2000. bumbershoot in particular has some absolutely stunning full band versions of some of his acoustic songs from his earlier days.
as new song recommendations: "a fond farewell" might be one of his best songs lyrically, "stickman" is my favorite elliott song of all time personally, "king's crossing" is absolute madness and a prime example of him composing a song instead of simply writing one. i have a heavy bias towards his final album because it's my favorite of his (and favorite album of all time), but i know others will recommend great songs off of his earlier albums.

There’s are atleast two documentaries about Elliott’s life. One of them is normally free on prime, it’s called Heaven adores you. It’s very good, you should 100% check out, it’ll fully inform you on just about everything Elliott did during his 34 years on earth. Please react to his song King’s Crossing. It’s my favorite.

I discovered Elliot growing up i. The 90's and watching Good Will Hunting.
    From the director...
Toward the end of the movie editing in Oregon, we were pretty sure that we wanted to use Elliott so it was time for us to ask permission. We were somewhat positive that he would say yes, because it was still somewhat before he broke out. He was starting to become more listened to around the country. But just some select people-super hip people-starting to figure out about Elliott. And he didn’t have a whole lot of exposure, so we just assumed that we would be okay with him. And I had a boyfriend who knew Elliott through working with Elliott’s girlfriend at a bar. So I had this connection, and I think I’d even met him at one time, but I didn’t remember. So through DJ, my boyfriend, we contacted him and sort of gingerly explained to him that we put his music all the way through our movie, and would he consider letting us [use] it. And so he watched the movie in my house and said yes. And then he did the last song “Miss Misery” at the end. We wanted an original song. The ones that we were using had already been released. So we asked him whether he could write something. So he wrote it after he watched the movie.

Some of his later albums and live shows would include Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss from the Portland band Quasi. They provided backing vocals, keyboard and drums i believe on some tracks.

This is one of my favorite Elliott songs, glad you liked it :) Regarding your question about why he hurt himself- I can't really say much aside from the fact that he suffered from depression, and possible trauma from an abusive stepfather, which were likely pretty big factors in his self destructive tendencies. Some people say his death was murder, others suicide, but ultimately the report was inconclusive, so I doubt we'll ever know what actually happened. But what matters most is appreciating his music and who he was as a person! He had his struggles, but he was also a really compassionate and silly guy!

It wasn't suicide - he was murdered by Jennifer Chiba, his girlfriend at the time, read about the case, which is still open by the way....

I don’t think he truly did that. I think his gf at the time did damage to him and he wouldn’t snitch on her. I think I don’t want to believe he would stop himself doing more work.
