  • The Jane Austen Zombie horror mash-up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies film was filmed at Basing House in Hampshire, in the Great Barn. My film takes you on a shot to location tour of the Great Barn at Basing House.
Why not visit Basing House to see where they filmed Pride and Prejudice + Zombies and walk in the footsteps of Henry Vlll, Elizabeth l, Oliver Cromwell and Elizabeth Bennett!
The film is an action comedy horror written and directed by Burr Steers. The film was based upon Seth Grahame-Smith's best-selling 2009 novel which was a reimagining of Jane Austen’s Regency era original novel adding zombie horror in a post-apocalyptic setting.
The film has an outstanding cast, the elegant Lily James (Downton Abbey) as Elizabeth Bennett, Sam Riley as the aloof Mr Darcy, Jack Huston, Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows), Douglas Booth (Great Expectations), Matt Smith (Dr Who), Charles Dance, and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones).
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has everything you would expect from an Austen plot, romance, large country houses, Regency dances plus zombies! Filming took place in the Great Barn in early 2014, which is known as The Bloody Barn. Basing House is located in the village of Old Basing, approximately one mile east of Basingstoke, in the north of the county of Hampshire. The Great Barn at Basing was a perfect location for production designer Dave Warren who was tasked with creating period-perfect sets that were also suitable for zombie warfare.
The film was released in 2016 to mixed reviews and wasn’t a success commercially. This film has a stellar cast and the Austen characters and plot are respectfully handled. Is it time for a reappraisal?
Basing House was once the largest private house in Tudor England and was visited by King Henry Vlll and Elizabeth l. During the English Civil War Basing House was destroyed at the hands of Oliver Cromwell, after a bloody siege. You can still see the artillery damage visible on the walls of the Great Barn.
You can also explore the ruins of Basing House and grounds, visit the Jacobean walled garden and the on-site museum. Today Basing House is a collection of banks and ditches, cellars and broken walls, with the occasional surviving structure. The huge circular bank and defensive ditches are remnants of the castle built by the de Port family after the Norman invasion of 1066.
Sir William Paulet, the first Marquess of Winchester and Lord Treasurer of England, chose to build his new house here in 1535. When first built, it was the largest private house in the country with around 360 rooms.
In its heyday Basing House was frequently visited by the monarch of the time including Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Philip II of Spain and Queen Mary I who honeymooned there in 1554 after their marriage in nearby Winchester
The English Civil War broke out in 1642 and the country was divided between Royalist supporters of King Charles I and supporters of Parliament. Basing House was attacked by Parliamentary troops on three occasions. The final assault came in August 1645 when 800 men took up position around the walls. The garrison held out until Oliver Cromwell himself arrived with heavy artillery. By 13 October 1645, the walls of the house had been breached, Cromwell stormed the site and left it a burning ruin. Today, all that remains are the foundations of this once great property.
Today the site is managed by Hampshire Cultural Trust and Basing House runs a number of events throughout the year.
