I’m a former high school teacher of nine years. My oldest is in 8th grade this year and it’s our second year homeschooling. Last week, another homeschool parent told me that she’s sending her son to private school next year because, “Every child deserves the high school experience.” I sort of was caught off guard by such a generalized assumption. I told her because of teaching high school for almost a decade, I feel like the experience is overrated. I wouldn’t send my child back just for the “experience”. After the conversation, I asked my husband how he felt. His high school experience was terrible and he hated it. I was very popular in high school, but that popularity led to some very destructive behavior both physically and emotionally. I think we will pass. If it isn’t broken, why fix it? Homeschooling seems like a fine choice for high school.

YES! Right there with you, Shanna. I think the parents who think this way are idolizing their "glory days", and don't realize how different high school is today versus when they attended. I tried explaining this to people before and they think I'm insane. I wanted to scream "this isn't the 70's anymore!". 🤦🏼‍♀️

@@mandy-maltz yes! My husband and I had that discussion as well. I graduated in 2001 and that was also the first year we had dial up internet in our home. I dealt with so much in high school but my home became a place of refuge and I was able to escape the bullying and high school drama. Home was a safe place. With today’s modern technology, kids are carrying all of what happened at school over into their homes. Cell phones have changed the entire dynamic of high school life. I’m so thankful I didn’t have that to add to the pressure I already faced. That’s just one example. I could write a novel on the things I’ve seen as a teacher. It’s truly shocking!

My Dad does not support me homeschooling my daughter. He made that clear by telling me I should “go get a job” and put my daughter back in public school so she can basically “fend for herself” 🙄 1- I do NOT enable my daughter, as a homeschooling parent 2- I do not need to become a tax payer/earn a paycheck to know my worth and feel like I am doing something meaningful 3- I fully understand (and accept) that he is “old school” and has no understanding at how corrupt the public schools are and that his values and standards are not mine. 4- I understand he has very little respect for me, and I pray that God softens his heart. 5- his opinion has no bearing on my life; I follow what my Heavenly Father wants and not my earthly father.

Wow thats exactly what i’m planning to do! The only difference i’m in online school which is sort of similar to public but i was in public school all in elementary, made friends which i haven’t seen in feels like forever. Middle school is when i started online mainly because of covid for 6th and 7th and it doesn’t help that my father has diabetes and a kidney transplant making it more of a higher risk to covid and he’s like my bestest friend to me so we hang out a lot but i decided to do online for 8th again because it would probably take along time to adjust to public school considering it’s the last grade for middle school so i’m holding it off for high school, but i’m still not sure if i’m really ready for it again. I ask myself questions like “what if the learning is different and i’ll be confused more if i go back to public school” and “how will i be able to get used to this again? will it be easy or hard?” i’ve been overthinking a lot about this, i really want to go back to see all my friends who i grew up with when i was little because online is lonely but will it be the same? I went to a elementary school that recommends to go to schools afterwards for example middle school and high school, so that’s why i know which high school my friends are going to and i’m still somewhat in contact with some of my friends from school so that also helps, i sometimes like to be super prepared because i’m deep down very nervous easily and i wonder how did the first day of high school feel like?

I never considered putting any of my children in public school until this year. After two years of managing high school for my oldest and teaching my younger 5 too I ran into too many issues since I'm home educating 6 in all the levels from preschool to high. We've also got some kids with adhd and one with additional learning issues. I found that there were not enough hours in the day anymore! With two high school kids this year now, grading and doing transcripts became too big a job this year with all my younger kids in the mix. The current public school situations are the thing that kept me from putting them in. Thankfully we have some excellent private schools in our area with homeschool programs so I enrolled my high school students in one so I wouldn't have to grade and handle the transcripts and this enabled me to continue home ed with the younger children. I think a lot of the people who say home schooling high is easy don't have a bunch of younger kids! 😅
We used to have family who didn't really approve of homeschooling in our lives. We stopped spending time with them. Homeschooling is hard enough, and we decided that if we're going to take time off for relationships why not spend that time with people who love and support us, and people who've successfully achieved what we're trying to do, ya know?

I knew basically right after I had my oldest that I wouldn't be sending my kids to school. I wasn't comfortable with the idea of other people (strangers) spending more time with my children than me or my husband. That was almost 7 years ago, needless to say there is no wayyyy I'd willingly send them to school now. I've had tons of comments from various people, but I never let it bother me too much. My husband and I get to make the decisions, and people can think whatever they want about the decisions we make 🤷‍♀️

I felt the same way. We wanted to put our kids in private school, but we were having issues with behavior in kinder and had to pull my oldest out and we turned around and put him in public school. For my husband, homeschooling was not an option at the time. Anyway, it helped us through some issues with his behavior at least for a little while and he was learning things like math reading and writing. But the last year they were in school was the year of the shut down. It was a horrible horrible year and we felt like we were back where we had started, only now I was in the office talking about 1 of 3 kids every time. If it wasn’t one it was the other. We were exhausted and then school shut down and became utter chaos. We were like, nope! We are done. This is too much chaos for us. My husband agreed it was time to homeschool. We haven’t looked back. We are happier as a family.

I get asked this….a lot. Our oldest is Autistic and I really questioned if I had what it takes to educate him….the answer is that God led me to educate at home- He will supply all I need. The public education system is too close to politics and has been for a long time. That never works well.
Homeschooling is hard! But so worth the cost to get Educate and protect our children’s spirits.

I had already realized that they had kicked parents out of the “education”, but what you said seals that. I had given the teachers the benefit of the doubt, but it is hard to do that at this point; they are complicit if they choose to teach when there is inappropriate things in the books.

@Nicole Delisi your comment doesn’t make any sense. She means that the schoolbooks that the public schools themselves use are suppressed from the parents. I had no idea what textbooks were used in the classroom/school when my daughter was in it to know which book(s) to order off of Amazon. Suppressing what all they are being taught inside the classroom, via the textbooks is one way the public school system has kicked the parents out of education. It is parents like us who wanted to be a part of their child’s education, but we were not allowed to be.
When mine was in PS, only the “room moms” were allowed to attend the parties that were held. It was all sorts of things like that.

We pulled our kids out of PS when they started doing school shooter drills. It was terrifying for my girls, both of whom are sensitive, to think about someone coming to their school to try and kill them! It didn’t help matters when the school made a huge fence all the way around, so it looked like a prison. It was just such an oppressive environment for little kids. We just started homeschooling so still have 12 years or so before she graduates highschool. However, I did start looking into how she can graduate (without going to public/private school). More so on how she can go into college/university if she chooses to pursue in a profession that requires a degree. There are ways around it that aren't as hard as I thought. We're in Canada and homeschooling is legal but if u homeschool the traditional way (opt out of school system, parents do all the teaching, picking out curriculum etc) you cant graduate highschool and show a transcript to get into college. We have an Online Learning option where you get assigned a certified teacher that monitors ur progress and at younger years parents still teach their own kids. This method kids can graduate with a transcript. That is still part of the "system" and i dont wanna have my kid a part of that.

Our son wanted to go back to public school and we let him. However, we are regretting it. He’s facing bullying and I’m not seeing much learning.
I’m trying to convince him to come back to homeschooling but he’s determined to be independent and go to school 🤦‍♀️
What’s your advice on this? Do we let him make the choice or do we as parents make the choice for him. It’s so hard

Take him out mama. It’s your job to protect him for as long as you can. Would you let him go off to war unprepared and unprotected? The public school system is training them up in the way the government thinks they should go, it’s not a fair fight and their precious minds no matter what age need solid teaching and truth. I’m sorry you’re going through this.

I am in a similar situation..my 13 year old makes comments almost everyday that it's not fair that I wont let him go back to school and that I'm not giving him a reason for why I'm homeschooling (even though I do give him reasons) he says that if he goes to school again he can get an actual education and he can actually have friends. This is our 2nd year homeschooling and I do not want him to go back for all the reasons mentioned in this video and more. It's so hard and I don't want him to fight him on it and I dont want to make him miserable it's so difficult!

Totally agree! Also I'm disabled and as a result things have been VERY bad financially for the last 3 years so I have not been able to join HSLDA even though I REALLY want to. I swear I thought I heard you say there's a$10 membership? I've only seen it well over $100 and we just don't have that money, unfortunately that's pretty much my entire annual homeschool budget LOL
Anyway maybe I heard wrong but girl let me know if I didn't ❤️
But yes in this day and age is a constant daily battle to protect our kids from this world. No way am I willing to put my 7 year old son in a public school environment, way too much being pushed on them that is not Biblical.

    Hi Mandy ☺️
I’m a long time follower/subscribe to your channel. I’ve been homeschooling my 3 boys since the beginning and am thinking of mfw for next year. You were the first person I could think of to ask this question- of placement!
Next year my boys will be in 6th,3rd,1st.
I want to do ECC with them next year, but if I do that my oldest will only do ancient/world history for 2 years before studying it another 2 years in high school.
    Or
If we skip 🙈 ECC and start in with creation to Greeks he would at least get 1 year of early American history in before jumping back into ancient/world history.
    What are your thoughts?
I really don’t want to skip ecc as I know it would be a fun year for all, and it would allow my 1st grader to get a tad older before diving into history 💙
Thank you so much for any insight!

The other argument I hear from people is why not put ur kids in Christian schools. At least they teach things that align with the bible. Well for one its super expensive. And then now at least in Canada where I am, they are slowly implementing (the stuff u wish not to talk about) those things into the school. The curriculum may still be Christian but they're adding all these other things. I think private/Christian schools are getting pressured by the public school system and/or they get some funding so need to comply. And personally I dont like the idea of a institutionalized school setting. One hour max a day to play outside, 20 mins to eat lunch, etc sounds like prison to me. Don't get me wrong, we have a routine at home and routines are good especially for younger kids to thrive but not set to the hour or limiting how long she can eat. Plus God gave us kids so we can raise/teach them not send them off at 5 years old for 6-8 hours a day to be taught and influenced by society.

I am teaching freshman year of high school right now. However, I am not handling the transcripts, Christian Light Education is. She is very behind in school and much of this year is a continuation from last year. But, the good news is that she will be able to get high school credits for her work this year even though some of her subjects are 6th grade level and some are 7th and 8th grade level. She has 1 high school level class, and it is an elective.
Would I ever send her to public school? No. She is a very, very sensitive person and public high school would eat her alive. She hates homeschooling, but I have not been able to get her back in our church's school because I can't manage finding a reliable ride for her to get to school. That, and my parish school won't accept any more of my 8 children. So, I have been forced to send some of them to charter school because of their special education needs, or to a different private school because I have trouble keeping up with their education, high school, and preschool all at the same time. My health was being affected by it. My own husband doesn't support me even trying to homeschool our children with special education needs. Thus, my oldest daughter is put in a position of having to defend her religious beliefs in class because she feels like they are being attacked by the very subject matter taught in history class. She has also informed me that she will be forced to take sexual health education class this year as a month long part of her health graduation requirement. We are formally requesting that she be exempted from that unit in health. A letter from our priest is expected soon.

@@jessicamontaperto810 My homeschooling daughter is not special needs, she is just very behind in school because she got very sick in her 6th grade year and she has not been consistently doing her schoolwork since then. She has developed depression because she used to be a serious ballet dancer and the illness robbed her of her balance enough that she can't dance anymore. School was never difficult for her until the past few years. She always made good grades from kindergarten through 5th grade. We are still trying to play catch up from sixth grade.
She used to be involved in American Heritage Girls, but found that the other teenagers were only interested in smartphones and dating. She is not permitted to date anyone until she has her high school diploma and we use technology on a limited basis. So, she literally had nothing to talk about with them. She needs other teenagers from our faith to talk to, but there are no youth groups at our church. Everything is connected with the parish school.
