There's a video of the early 1970s in New York police officers going on the streets carrying those revolvers

Really cool video but question concerning his duty carry weapon. Was it a SW model 10 from 1905? Seriously old school if so. My dad was Law enforcement in 60's-80's and used a Colt Trooper. I used a SW 681 my first 2 years of patrol until our agency switched to 9mm's. I never saw anything approaching that revolver's vintage. In SoCal we used a lot of Bianchi or Safety Speed holster leather gear so this was interesting to see duty rigs from East coast.

But Stan said that it was forbidden for officers to have a nickel or chrome pistols as off duty weapon. Crminals loved chrome and if you not in uniform and pull out a shiny gun, you could become a victim of friendly fire.

As recently as 2018 some agencies still authorized grandfathered revolvers for the last tiers of personnel originally hired and armed with those. Revolvers still are useful and a well trained competent operator can prevail over opponents with more modern firearms with superior accuracy, tactics, cover, and concealment. For concealed and or back up carry the round vs square configuration is easier to discreetly blend into the wearer's clothes. That said, a Glock or Sig is now the preferred primary but can be supplemented with a trusty wheel gun.

When I was in 4th grade a girl named Brandy was in my class. Her dad was a cop & he came in for “show n tell” This was probably 1981 or ‘82. Newark, California. The entire visit left a memorable impression but the most trick thing that I remember was his holster. Like most cops he wore a Sam Brown belt, long night stick, long Motorola radio and he either carried a .38 or .357 revolver. In the SF Bay Area hos visit was probably the last year or two, before cops all switched to automatics. Anyhow all the boys in my class were practically yelling begging him to show us his gun. At the end of his presentation, right before he took us all downstairs to let us frog hop through the front seat of his cruiser, passenger door to drivers; he removed his revolver to the biggest collective “ooooh ahhhh” imaginable. His side arm holster popped open on hinges like a spring loaded book. I’ve never seen it before or since. Now that I’ve penned this memory I’m going to try & find an example of what I described. In retrospect it seems kinda gimmicky and maybe not all that safe either. Nonetheless it was a great childhood experience.

Sounds like you're describing a clamshell holster, I remember a retired LAPD SWAT officer describing how he lost his six inch wheel gun while chasing a suspect when the holster popped open after he landed from a fall or jump.

I'd love to find a duty belt that's 44" with a holster for the 586 4". I cannot find mine.
