- Today I would like to show you 2 examples of John Coltrane superimposing triad pairs on top of minor chords.
Example 1 is heard on Miles Davis’s So what from Kind of Blues
Example 2 is heard on Coltrane´s minor Blues Mr Pc from the Giant Steps album
The melodic shapes in the video come from the Jazzduets Thesaurus of Minor triad pairs:

i love how this approach constantly brings you back to the beauty of the sound of the intervals, like a steady reminder to listen.
Straightforward explanation and very easy to understand. Thank you! Now need to practice this and get them under my fingers.
excellent stuff...as always..thank you Nick!!
I love the sound of triad pairs. Thanks for the video, and great playing Nick!
Excelent video! Thank you very much!
Very well done. Great resource and practice material!
What a great solution! Sounds great.
Love that as all your videos! So useful, inspiring and fun to watch! Appreciate your fine sense of humour 🙂
Ah ha. So this is one of the ways the great Jon Coltrane created interesting melodic lines when playing in the modal style of that time. It’s not hard to understand and it’s a great way to create forward motion right out of the gate. Wonderful!
Wonderful stuff!!
Excellent stuff! I've been looking for other ways to incorporate non chord tones, but this opened my eyes to so much more. Great examples! I knew all the music, so it was very enlightening. :)
This is the level of instruction we need thanks
Super ! and your playing is really good !!
just beautiful! awesome lesson!

Bro who could possibly say you sound bad?? I been at this a long time and you sound great! Appreciate the vid. Even though I know this I never just focused on those 2 triad pairs. Brecker did this same thing often too
really top ! merci !
Epic !!! Gracias !! Muchas gracias !
You do good work.
opening sounds great!
super thanks!
Thank you!🙏
What a lot of mileage from two simple triads. Great stuff. Thanks.
Your triad pair videos inspired me to actually build an instrument.
The idea is to explore improvisation in a "safe" way with maps, as scales and triad pairs are given to you in two separate touch pad sections.
I sampled my guitar and now it sounds kinda like it.
I did it so I can play new ideas without memorizing "shapes", cause the instrument I made abstracts that "mechanic/muscle memory" layer and also takes care of some of the theory too. I select a new map and I´m instantly blessed with a new sound pallete to paint.
Thank you so much for your inspiring content.
great!
Your tone is so sweet.
Sensacional!!!
I dig it
Your opening doors for me Thanks very much
As Johnny Carson would say: "wonderful stuff". Thank you from a tenor saxophonist /flutist :-)
Brilliantly creative explanation and instruction. Nice job!
Appreciate this thanks!
merci pour votre analyse ceci est passionnant !from the sud of france
One of your best videos!!!
thanks!!!
Very good! Thank you Nick. There’s some similarities to Spanish flamenco music, you can hear that on Chick Corea’s album “Return to forever “
Muito bom!!!
Nice
🔥🔥🔥
Clássic!
Very nice indeed, tasteful phases
Do you have any advice for a bass player, appreciate very much
Bought the Thesaurus!
Actually, I've been warming up with those Trane runs for the past year......without knowing it really..., I actually got the idea from part of a Joe Zawinul synth solo, learned that more or less, then realized that some what he was playing were similar to those minor triad pairs Trane was playing in that Miles video. But the those Trane surprisingly easy to play.
Great video.Your tone is like Kenny G.
Right on the money ...thanks! how's the weather in Cordoba..?
Thank you.its difficult fingering wise on the 🎸. I'll have to find a way around it😅
Thanks for the great job . I picked up a lot from watching you .
cheers!
I think that it is time that you made a video on one of the most important bebop teachers...Barry Harris!
Love this! Love that Drum track ! Is it one of the supplied backing tracks in your Thesaurus package ? ( p.s your playing is great :) )
The drums are played by the great Oscar Giunta, of Buenos Aires. I could easily add them to the thesaurus!
@@JazzDuets That would be great! Let me know and I will immediately purchase a copy. Thank you.

Hi Nick, thanx for that precious content again....I'm not a horn player....so to me it is easier to think of the two triads (F and G major triads) as a scale....to me it's a F Major Pentatonic complemented with the #4 (#11)...maybe this helpful/interesting for others too...kind regards
0:45 notice the guy on the the left looks over shocked likes he's hearing the best solo ever
uah!
This is the best way to explain this masterclass thank you very much GodBless you forever keep posting more videos like this
What musical software are you using to illustrate your channel??
Dorian.
They work because they’re upper structure triads ..
I play by ear!!! I have no clue what you are on about 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ausomn Nick thanks, alas the half speed is not to my likings... why not play it at half speed with your soprano?
Two reasons: 1) I like the half speed down an octave as it reminds me of my old tape player 2) the solos are quite fiddly!
У колтрейна как то по другому звучит
