Pro On A Cheap Amazon Bike Vs GCN Presenters | Tech Vs Talent

- Andrew Feather the current British Hill Climb Champion, could drop most of us at his Sunday café ride pace, and holds what seems like every major KoM in the UK. So it's not (that) embarrassing that last time we raced him we lost...even though there were four of us...in a relay.
With that in the past, we set about devising a way that maybe we could actually beat him, and Ollie not get dropped. The challenge we came up with was that Andrew had to ride against three of us on our top of the line superbikes, while he was riding a £270, 15kg "superbike" we picked up from Amazon a while back. Could we finally beat him this time?

Let's just take a moment to appreciate the Eurobike for not falling apart under Andrew's immense power output during that climb.
Earlier this week we saw a $30,000 superbike snap its handlebars in the Olympics so it could've been a lot worse.
This proves that eurobike is a reliable bike!
@@aaronli1488 during the olympics the cyclist are mostly sprinters putting more than 2000W ;)
I hope all the presenters are on eurobikes to see who really is the fastest no complaints! Lol!
Thats it...found myself a winter bike.
We always make fun of Ollie for getting dropped, but seriously, what we have to consider is that he's the only amateur among a ton of ex-pros so it'd be quite normal for him to be slower. And honestly, I'm a hundred percent sure he'd absolutely smoke any of us in a race.
"Amateur" with 400watts.. He could easily destroy the semi-pro class. 😅
I've been overtaken by him, can confirm he's rapid
There's the next GCN video: "Ollie Vs. the Comments Section." Who do you think will win? Tell us in the comments below.
I like your comment and sentiment, but I rather think that if we saw Ollie on the road, he'd offer an autograph and take a few moments to comb his hair and pose for some photos outside the nearest coffee shop.
Totally! I mean I'm 25 and the only climbing I do is up the stairs at home and even then I feel winded.
"It's got a kickstand." Ollie's delivery was perfection. Genuinely chuckled.

Andrew Feather is a real sport for all of these races.
Mom, can I have a road bike? - No, we have a road bike at home... Eurobike.
Hahah
It's honestly all you need if you just wanna go cycling through a path
Andrew has a new training bike. Imagine riding the Eurobike all week then racing on the 5kg bike. Feeling like a god...
Bleeping out Manon just makes this funnier, great effort GCN. Living in this area, I know how steep that gorge is and how busy with tourists it can get, not sure I would want to race up it, especially through the narrow sections!
Man-awn
The only reason that the „Ollie got dropped“ joke keeps being funny, is because he is an absolute beast!
Hi Ollie’s dad
400w for 8min at 70 kilo
Thats local pro power out here in North America
@@gntfilms Mom more likely.
Exactly. I've raced him in time trials he's pretty pacy.
He's recently gone under 20 minutes for a 10 mile. He's not hanging about.
He is a beast, he would smoke anyone on your sunday climb without touching the handle bar. 400 watt for 8 min.
The rage and passion in Manon’s eyes while she was driving the car was frankly terrifying. She is 100% the reason the GCN boys won!
Yeah, even I am afraid now on my rides.

I feel sad for Andrew and his half a tonne bike! Next time, a tricycle? 🤣🤣🤣
This video is pure gold! 😁

they need to 1up Andrew desperately!
This was really fun to watch. Manon and Hank’s dad could be the ultimate good DS/bad DS team. I wonder what would happen if Andrew would be allowed to use his own bike but with flat pedals and trainers.
Statistically almost no difference from normal, lab testing has proven flat pedals are equally efficient and the only difference would be a slight weight penalty
@@stephenboshears4832 Yup, I did the experiment myself in the meantime. Same bike, just swapped the pedals and tried again. No significant difference.
Managed 35km in torrential rain this morning before giving up and returning home for a hot shower, a coffee and now a GCN video on the sofa... I now couldn't feel more lazy!

@@marekholub8668 Birds, which are covered in them might have something to say about that!!!
Nice! My bike is 14kg (22kg when fully loaded with laptop, etc, for work). I often get overtaken by fat guys on pro bikes, who don't even look like they're trying. I've always wondered what difference it would make to get a better bike, and I think this is a good indication.
On the flat the rolling resistance has the most impact, the weight isn't that important as long as it's no gradient. Tires with less rolling resistance can make a recognizable difference here, for not too much costs. Typical commuter tires used for trekking or touring bikes have 3 to 4 times the rolling resistance compared to road bike tires pros use, but even simple, inexpensive road bike training tires (which have twice the rolling resistance compared to the most efficient pro tires) cut the rolling resistance in half compared to a typical touring bike tire.
Of course a loaded commuter bike will never be as fast as a expensive road bike
@@simonm1447 - cheers! will look into it when i next replace my tires - they'd be pretty cheap ones for sure.
@M570 I'm not a pro, but I can speak as a hobby cyclist and bicycle commuter. I have a couple of bikes (no real expensive ones), it makes a difference if I ride my converted road bike (which was once a trekking bike, around 13 kg), a mountain bike or my fat bike (11 cm wide tires have more rolling resistance than 28 mm wide ones on the road bike).
With the same pedaling power I achieve 18 to 20 kmh with the fat bike, around 23 to 25 with the Mountain bike and 27 to 30 with the road bike.
With the road bike I can overtake E Bikes (25 kmh) without problems, with the fat bike it's hard work to keep the speed with them at 25 km/h.
@M570 - wow, a few assumptions there! I'm 67kg, and very fit for an amateur. I've done more than 5000km since March, which is when I got a basic odometer. On flat tracks I can easily cruise at 30kph. There is a nice 3km track in a park where I sometimes do laps - I overtake virtually anybody going up the hill section (or any hill for that matter), but it seems that good bikes have considerably higher easy-cruising speeds - I reckon many people on such bikes do about 30-35kph with only a little effort (I have to work reasonably hard to maintain 30kph). My bike weighs about twice some of these, has wide tires, and cost about $500 (Australian).
@@BozoTheBear what bike is it?
400 Watts Olly?! He's been training!
Ollies finish was mysteriously cut. Did he beat Andrew? Can the world know? Should the world know?!?
a question that must be answered. GCN EDITORS TELL US WHAT HAPPENEDDDD
GCN must release the footage or it will become the next big conspiracy theory!
Why did they drop the footage of Olli's finish from the edit???
I presume they only had two motorbikes filming. One for Alex and Connor and one for Andrew. They basically had to pick who to film. Ollie got dropped by the camera crew.
The real truth is it was Ollie's second lap.
That awkward moment when the crap bike they use is the bike you have 😭😭😭😭
Or weighs about the same as your own bike at 15kg. 😦
I couldn’t keep a straight face as Manon is in “DS mode” sorry, too adorable.

Manon going full DS made my day 😂😂😂
Watching this is like watching Team Rocket going up against Ash in every unfair ways all the time
Manon about to cry with pride at the end. Beautiful.
This is literally the main reason why I didn't start triathlon racing back in 2017 when I was seriously considering it. I was training at a YMCA swimming twice a week, running twice a week, and riding an electronic stationary bike. I was broke as hell, so I bought a $150 ''mountain'' bike from walmart, thinking I could use it for outside riding and then maybe rent a bike for my first triathlon (the 2017 Chaparral Lake Sprint Tri). But my first time riding that bike I quit after 10km when I was going WAY slower than the electronic bike normally said I go. I realized then how much of a difference price made, and I knew I didn't have the thousands of dollars to buy a 'real' bike. Four years later and I still can't imagine putting in tens of thousands of Canadian dollars into a hobby. I still swim, run and I finally bought a nicer bike that I use for weekly hour-long rides, and in the Summer to cruise through the beautiful mountain roads in Western Canada. That nicer bike is of course, the Eurobike you guys roasted for 10 minutes.
If your bikes really cost 10,000 pounds each, then it would take the average Canadian 20 weeks to be able to afford one if they spent zero money on anything else (assuming median income for full time and taking income tax and sales tax into consideration). That's why I prefer MMA and have been doing that since 2019 instead of triathlon. No matter how much more money you spent on your trunks, gloves and mouthguard, at the end of the day it's YOU vs ME.
The Eurobike may be heavy, but it could be improved over the time with some mid class components (the ones they use are pretty basic) for not too much costs to a decent bike for a hobby rider. A set of trekking bike front chain rings (48-38-28) could solve the problem of the low top gear inexpensively.
A rough steel frame bike may be even an practical advantage (of course it's slower) over a lightweight but more fragile carbon frame for hobby use.
"We have to level the playing field"
Surely that would mean all using the same bike? Now you're leveling the results 😄
I smell a "turn the Eurobike into a superbike" video idea
It would cost more than buying a super bike to counteract the weight of the frame
Not going to happen, you would have a better chance at making a 40 year old touring bike into one, like the one Manon did 100 miles on...
Maybe a lot of drilling could help? :-)

Manon in full on dragon lady mode .. very scary
Andrew Feather's definitely taking it easy in this race (if you seen his face in championship races, you'll know!). He's probably afraid the cheap bike would fall apart if he did 100%.
He was instructed not to win. I'm sure he can smoke all 3 GCN guys on that Eurobike if he went all out for it.
@@radiocontrolled9181 Definitely possible, after all they are promoting brands, etc. Another possibility is the fit is way off on the Eurobike with the stock stem, stock saddle which they didn't bothered to change and the geometry isn't typical of a road bike, you'll notice the head tube angle at 2:00, it looks the same angle as MTB.

Connor left hanging. Feels bad dude
I know! Poor bugger tried to play it off but we all felt his pain there.
It's not all about the weight, the awful gearing system is what makes him slower
I ended up putting an 11-24t freewheel on the back of mine and it helped greatly. Best $30 spent on the bike.
With a comment like that, I had to go looking for what the stock gears actually are on that thing. If I'm reading these right, they're 42/34/24 on the front, 14/16/18/21/24/26/28 on the back. Plugging those into my spreadsheet reveals… *holy crap it really is that bad.*
I now see why Alex complained about the top gear being too low in the original review - it's only 80 inches, not that it matters on a hill climb. The bottom gear is plenty low for climbing hills, which is the more typical mistake avoided, but they've clearly gone too far the other way. The bottom rear cogs are also the closest together, relatively speaking, which is the opposite of what you want, especially on a low-priced bike aimed at novices. Bearing in mind that double-shifts are nearly impossible due to the bad shifter positioning, I can imagine these gears being extremely annoying to ride on.
A review I found elsewhere suggested a Shimano Claris crankset with 50/39/30 as a comparison. Dropping that in as a replacement, then deleting the practically redundant 26T rear cog in favour of a 34T granny, yields a much nicer gear sequence. The low gear is then below 24" and the high increases to 95", a perfectly acceptable range for a novice rider, and you get the closer gear ratios in the level-road range rather than in acceleration and climbing ranges.
@@Kromaatikse I guess the gearing is made for hobby cyclists, who typically pedal with half the power at best of a pro cyclist, a hobby cyclist needs relatively low gearing for climbing, a pro not.
The front chain rings (42/34/24) are the size used for cheap 3 x MTB drivetrains, the other common 3 x standard size is 48/38/28 for touring or trekking bikes. The components used are Tourney ones, stuff usable for occasional use (it's simple, basic stuff but it works within its limits).
A change of the front chain rings to the touring size would reduce the problem with the low top gear.
@@simonm1447 No, the parts they used are *not* from the Tourney groupset - or at least, not all of them. I haven't been able to find *anyone* that makes that particular 14-28T cassette off the shelf (not even Microshift), and the Tourney groupset includes a 12-32T 7-speed option that would be far more suitable, giving gears both higher and lower than the range actually provided; the other Tourney cassette option is a 12-28T which is also more logically constructed (12-14-16-18-21-24-28) than what the Eurobike came with, and still offers a higher gear. The 24-34-42 crankset *could* be a Tourney part, but that doesn't excuse ignorance of the 28-38-48 crankset right next to it in the catalogue, numbers which I recently took *off* my hybrid in favour of a 26-36-48 crankset.
I happened across a 21-speed mountain bike owned by my landlord's family this week, and counted the teeth on the cogs. It had 44/34/24 on the front and a 14-32T cassette (14-16-18-21-24-28-32) on the back. Perfectly logical for an inexpensive mountain bike, and actually gives a lower bottom gear than the Eurobike does.
My point is that the Eurobike came with an absolutely atrocious gearset - inexcusably bad, IMHO - which contributes to its poor performance on the road. I also don't buy the argument that novices need lower gears; the Tourney 12-32T cassette and 28-38-48 crankset give a bottom gear only fractionally higher (23.4") than the stock one (22.9"), while increasing the top gear to 107" from 80" and giving plenty of options in between.
@@Kromaatikse at least according to other websites which reviewed the bike (I don't have one of these) it don't has a cassette with a freehub, but a old style freewheel (with the freehub integrated into the cassette) , which is available in different sizes, but also in 14-28 for 7 speed. The derailleurs are also Tourney, I'm not sure where they got the front chain rings with the cranks (probably a riveted set, not bolted) but this is a standard part for a couple of Euros.
I guess it might show the laws of physics do come into play: shifting a heavier weight up a hill takes more energy (can a bike really weigh upwards of 15 kilos!?) & if you've only got so much to give, the balance of favour goes to GCN (for now). Great fun!
it might be interesting to see a groupset swap or weighting of the high end bikes to even the pitch
A fantastic performance - from MANON!
Great work everyone. Big thanks to Andrew for being such a good sport
I'm guessing this was filmed on the same day as the 4 v 1 race, especially as Andrew mentioned it being the second climb, so he beat them on the first climb and held pretty close on the second given the bike...
If i remember correctly Andrew has a VO2max of 81 which is insane

Loved it! Well done GCN. Great show.👌🏾👍🏾
And off course this is unfair on Andrew, still a great sportsmanship shown by him. 👍🏾🙏🏽
GCN never disappoints with its content. I had a good laugh!
Last time, we established that Andrew was 4 times better than each presenter, and they only had to ride 1/4th of the climb last time while this time they had to ride the whole climb, and still defeated Andrew by a significant margin. Now I dare you to say "It's not about the bike, it's only about your fitness"
To be fair it's a fairly extreme example. Imagine he'd still smash them on a sub £1k 8-9kg bike.
@@philthewriter Agreed. But it definitely shows the difference your bike can make
It's an incredibly extreme example. I've had 35 year old steel road bikes that would thrash that amazon thing.
@@wpalmer5547 me too!
Id be willing to bet the loss was due to psych reasons. There are plenty of scientific tests showing that bike weight, on road, is of negligible importance, even up hill. Go look them up, the 5% difference in uphill efficiency is more than made up for with his 20% better power output.(just guessing numbers)
Give Andrew a week to adjust his expectations of that bike, and he would beat them up next time. Id put 1000$ down on that bet.
Ive ridden bikes that were WAY heavier than my full suspension mountain bike, and the surprise of the weight really messes with your mind. Give him a week to adjust and he would be way way faster. Guaranteed.

Guys getting lit 🔥 up by Manon reminds of a certain Cycling Netflix series 🤔😂 great video everyone 😍
Yes I'm thinking the same. My wife hates when I binge watch that lol
This video would have made sense if Andrew Feather had an aluminium bike with alloy wheels weighing around 11kilos like the Decathlon RC 120 and the GCN presenters rode with their high end carbon bikes. The cheap 15 kilo eurobike made it a no contest pretty much.
In a time when I am looking for my first cross bike, I am glad to see that the champion bike still use QR skewers. That puts the list just on my budget!
Poor Ollie!!! Manon being mean and getting bleeped definitely pushes this over the top. Way to have fun and share with us GCN :)
About 10 years back, I tried using tire liners MTBing in the desert. I took them out because of how sluggish my bike became. It's impressive AF stayed that close, and shocking the drivetrain stayed in one piece.
