Wow. This video is from 1990 in Portland Oregon, they were there for the filming of My Own Private Idaho directed by Gus Van Sant. Flea, River, Keanu Reeves and the rest of the cast and crew were all staying at Gus Van Sant's house. There were so many people there, Gus decided to leave and stay at an apartment in downtown Portland - probably to get away from the crowd and noise. According to cast and crew many people would play their instruments and jam. River would sometimes play his guitar for three hours. He learned to play his guitar when he was six years old. Thank you so much for posting this.
River was an extremely experimental individual, he appeared on smile from the streets you hold.. doesnt get much more out there than that. I'm sure he's playing exactly what he wished he was an accomplished musician
River definitely had the musical talent running through his bones. If he's entirely self-taught like I've seen claimed he would have been quite the guitarist eventually. Thanks for the rare piece of history
Barley Mob - he started early... his family was involved with this strange Children of God cult and he and his sister Rainbow 🌈 had to go out and busk for money and River would play guitar and sing and his sister would collect the money... River was supporting his family from well before his balls dropped and was supporting like 30 people or more on his acting career but his first love was music... but it's hard to be an actor and musician simultaneously- Hugh Laurie being an exception... But River definitely had talent and desire... obviously Flea kind of dominates... which is debatable if you should do that as that more experienced player... No slight on Flea intended... It was River being told they had to many people jamming at the Viper and they couldn't fit him in (this they told him when he got there though they told him he was scheduled- granted... doing a speedball in response wasn't the answer... Still, I don't like it when people screw with musicians... if they let him play for 5 minutes maybe he would still be with us...
Yeah, like mentioned below, River was pimped out in the streets playing music to support the cult he was in at the time. We're talking August Rush and Slumdog Millionaire style. He's used to improvising in the streets of 3rd world countries for coins to being home to a cult known for molesting children, not your normal upbringing. His musical talent is self taught as a child in South America and experimental as hell. Funny thing is his music was far out then, now would fit right in with many bands out there this day in age.
The 90s are you rock crowd hung around and jammed w River but never accepted him as on of them. That night at the Viper Room they wouldn’t let him play, which is possibly the reason John gave him that drug concoction because River was pissed and he felt bad
The way River played the guitar is plain and simple: the way he played it. Whether it’s good or bad is up for interpretation. There is no such thing as a good or bad player, there are just people who like to colour between the lines and people who want to see where the colouring pencils take them and River was probably one of those people. This is personally not really my style but saying that he’s a bad guitarist or musician is just rude and disrespectful because judging off of Aleka’s Attic music I think we can all say he was talented. Really talented.
I mean, I think you can argue that an innability to play would be bad. However he clearly knows how to play the guitar. Whether or not people like it is another story. 6:45 sounds like he could play a traditional rock riff if he chose to. He's just fucking around.
What is needed against Flea's bass fartings are more melodic and sustained guitar lines. He's should play off off Flea rather that try to "Flea out" himself.
@@sashabrown1796yeah too bad people expect Jimmy Page whenever a person is on video playing guitar, and if they’re not mind blowing people say they suck. Flea, John and River all jammed quite often together. There must be something they got out of the experience. Maybe they were connecting on a level beyond music theory. Despite your opinion of this video, River actually was decent guitar player.
