  • Constable Hurn is back from his holiday and out on the road again. A stolen car some fake plates and a serious assault make for a busy few days, so jump in and ride along.

    Hey, I got a question, is a traffic cop a general duties cop + traffic cop or is each role specialised to the point that a traffic cop does not have the training to do the general duties stuff and the general duties cop does not have the training to do the traffic cop work? Is a probationary constable general duties? Random questions I know, but I am sure I've seen the yellow and orange cars doing each others work.

    • @newzealandpolice
      @newzealandpolice  Před 5 lety +1

      I actually don't, everyone does two years on the front line before specializing. I know they say that there's no height requirement but i'm 4 ft 9 😂 What are the chances of me passing the PCT and also tips on dealing with larger males on the job?
    Ps: So great to have you back!

    • @newzealandpolice
      @newzealandpolice  Před 5 lety +3

      Ok, this is gonna be an essay because I passionately believe if you've got the right mentality nothing should stop you.
      To begin with I'd say passing the PCT is 100% about training and the wall is all about technique, I've certainly seen shorter women manage it. If it's something you're worried about the PT trainers will help you and give you time to practice.
      On the other question, part of the job is physical but it's not a majority. I've been in quite a number of physical confrontations and I'm not larger than most offenders. I've relied on careful observation, moving fast, using the tools on my belt and communicating with my team. Technique helps here and doing something like Jiu Jitsu on the side will boost your skill and confidence. That said, communication is the most powerful tool, good communication can save the fight from even taking place.
      Overall I'd say being reliable, motivated and mentally resilient is more important and more helpful than just being big, if you've got that those things then don't worry about size.
      Hope that helps. - Constable Hurn.

    Hi constable Hurn this is kind of a personal question, how old are when you join the police? And also have you ever met a Filipino in the community?

      Mid twenties, and yep I've met many. Auckland is a real multi-cultural city, part of what makes it such a great place to work. - Constable Hurn.

    When do you have to where your police hat?

    • @newzealandpolice
      @newzealandpolice  Před 5 lety

      We wear them on patrol, if we're walking around or doing bar checks you'll often see us in hats. Roadside I do wear it sometimes but when get in and out of the car in a rush I just leave it behind. - Constable Hurn.

    I am contemplating being a police officer but am worried it may ruin my social life or being able to have fun. What do you think?

    • @newzealandpolice
      @newzealandpolice  Před 5 lety

      Not going to lie, shift work is tough on your social life sometimes. Weekends, holidays, they are busy times for the Police so you might find yourself working when everyone else is out and free when everyone else is at work. That said not all roles in the Police are shift work and even some that are have consistent days off so it's easy to plan. - Constable Hurn.

    You toured to Wellington on a Yamaha MT-03?? You're brave, if so... I used to have one of those. Nice little bike, if that's what it is.

      Yep, round Coro, the east cape, down the east coast and all the way around to welly then up the west coast home. Took me a little under two weeks! I'd rather have the 07 but my bank account is happier with the 03. - Constable Hurn.

      @@newzealandpolice Nice road trip! I sold my much loved and cared for MT-03 and within about a month the new owner had written it off :(. I recommend the little GP style Akrapovic slip-on can for the MT-03. Makes it sound really good, pops and crackles when you downshift, but it's still well under the legal 100 dB limit. Safer when you're in traffic too; less likely to have someone right next to you change lanes into you, or over you.
