This is a comment not a question I just wanted to say you have hands down one of the most amazing families and your relationship with you and your partner your husband is awesome Miss Jess you a relationship that most people only dream of and that is a blessing that I know you even understand. You give all the kids who were going to watch this on CZcams and example of what a relationship is supposed to look like the given take God bless you and thank you for sharing your life with ours amazing just amazing family
I 100% agree
You are so fortunate and blessed and it keeps some of us hopeful.
My garden died off last summer when I went out of town. I didn’t replant anything in the fall because life. We had a rare Arizona rain a couple months ago and sunflowers started popping up everywhere. It was such a glimmer of hope for me. The next day I was out there amending my soil and getting ready to try again. Thank you for always reminding us that things want to grow and no one has a back thumb.
A fellow Arizona gardener! Isn’t it funny how our seasons are so different than other areas? That rain last week was so nice. I have plans to put sunflowers in a new bed in the next few weeks, looking forward to seeing their happy faces 🥰
“When spring came, even false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest.” Hemingway 🌷
The only thing that could spoil a day was people and if you could keep from making engagements, each day had no limits”
Jess, I have to share with you about my daughter, Monica. She went into a seizure last Sunday night that lasted three hours. She was in the hospital from Sunday until Wednesday. She has felt bad and has had no expression since coming home. When I started watching this video and she saw you smiling, sharing your garden and baby goats, she started smiling. She has autism and is thirty-seven years old. Doctors said she would not live past six. She has proved them wrong. You brought her joy tonight, and I thank you. By the way, she boops you. ;)
The smile on your face when talking about the garden is priceless 🥰
Agreed! I love that SO much about her!
I love the banter between you and Miah. It makes it feel like we’re all good friends just shootin the breeze and spending the day together.
I planted mint three years ago, not realizing how bad it could get - to this day, when I weed my garden it smells like toothpaste 😂
Mint: YER WELCOME. 😎
It always amazes that the seed packets for mint contain hundreds of seeds. I always wonder about the poor novice gardener who plants a row of mint or something and then needs to use a lawnmower on it a couple of years later.
Good luck on your weeding.
Mine growing wild and not a lot. I have pulled some but I heard mint is good for the garden? I am still not sure how and why it be good. I know mint spreads but not sure why would it be good in the garden with veggies. 🤷🏼♀️
@@benandoladiercks6730 My mint has grown so much that it's not really visible as anything other than a weed, but its roots choke out every other plant in the garden if I don't stay on top of it. Don't know how it could be beneficial when it wraps around things the way it does 🤷 Hoping this is the year I stop smelling toothpaste and vanquish it once and for all!
@@riyoukaze so what you saying I better pull it out? 😂 I definitely don't want to do that to my plants.
Oh my goodness, Jess! “I wish I could boop you on the head.....”. I wish you could, too!! You’re like the CZcams homesteading BFF of so many of us! After every video you put out I tell my husband what nuggets of wisdom you shared. As soon as I say “Jess said...”, he knows EXACTLY who I’m talking about. Thanks for sharing!
I just wanted to say, you HAVE shared that feeling of promise with us. By inspiring us (or at least me) to go and fall in love with the garden ourselves. ❤❤❤
How sweet the baby goats cry 😭, as they learn to adjust to outdoors! The Mama's welcoming them so precious 💕
Is this a ‘why buy the milk if you can milk the goat for free’ moment? Because I’m LOVING it. Good job, maiah! 😂
Watched the livestream last night....I giggle every time you mention your pour over coffee. Because....I use a coffee pot made in the 1930s, that is a pour over. But back then it was called a drip coffee pot. Yep, make coffee every day in a 90 year old coffee pot.
My husband and I use a French press and will never go back to electric
Lol love it. Hubs & I pour over a coffee filter that sits in a stonewear drip thing. Don't even know what it's called but we've been doing it for a few years and love it.
Video starts.
Pauses video to go make coffee.
Ok now I'm ready. 😆
I love how your joy of Spring is so apparent. It’s contagious!
Jess, everytime I get antsy about the garden thinking that I'm behind or I have to do something right now! I remind myself....I am 2 weeks behind Jess in weather. If sprouts are happening in your home- it's time for me to plant. This is a great way to keep my impatience in control.
I was just thinking this! I was panicking about my peppers 😅🌿
@@ameliakat9982 where are you? I'm in 7b but in NJ
Miah has achieved next level gardening. About as farm to table as you can get.
It sure has snuck up on me. Just 3 weeks ago we had the coldest temps in almost 100 years and now my asparagus is almost a foot tall, my strawberries are starting to wake up, the spring flowers are blooming and it's almost time to plant out my starts....and I am not ready!!! lol. Oh, and my first chicks are coming in April! I am going to be a chicken mamma! Wheeeeeeee!
Thanks for the reminder, I need to pull some old strawberry plants to give room for the newbies!
Mercy is still so much tinier than Mack. It’s going to be so fun watching them grow.
There is no happier smile than yours in the spring. Gardens just light up your whole being.
I love how you stay so upbeat.😁 your family is such a joy to watch.
Those goats are so adorable! It’s like watching a puppy wag it’s tail. Thanks for your advice last week Jess.
Jess, please know...you share the joy of gardening with all of us every time we watch you.
My heart is filled with joy seeing these baby goats thriving!
I dont remeber if you mentioned Noah getting the land, but whoever does end up in the homestead you began, is one blessed person for sure. God bless!
Is it weird that I teared up watching your happiness about the storm and green growing loveliness?
Not weird at all. Joy springth overflowing straight out of my heart through my eyes. Jess makes me feel like this all the time ❤🥰
@@alisamcdaniel2385 beautifully said! Thank you! Yes, she does the same for me. Expresses things so well.
She is one of those people who's body language is the first thing you hear ❤
Let’s go Artie!!! I love seeing his vigor and strength since you’ve had him! 🤣
Reminds me of the song from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers: All at once, one day... it’s spring! 🥰🌸
Edit: also, this comment is peak 2nd generation homeschooler
Haha, love that movie.
One of my FAVORITES from the Golden Age musicals!!!!!!!!!!!
I love that movie!
I live that I know what you are talking about!! 🤣Be well from CANADA 🇨🇦
That's my wife's absolute favorite movie. She had it on VHS when we got married and when it went bad, I bought it on DVD for her.
I'm straining our goat milk while listing to that story and that's great, I love it! 🤣🤣🤣

“Last year in THIS garden...” yeah, it’s like spending every precious moment with all the ones you hold dear before moving on. Sacred. We moved from TX to TN five years ago to start over and just this spring when I finished my seed starts I realized it felt normal ~ like I know this land how she long’s to be cared for in each season. Enjoy all of the lasts on your land, friend...each memory is a seed to watch grow in the new place.
I have seasonal depression and it has been such a relief to have been getting spring weather. My mood is always at the lowest feb-mar and being able to go outside again has really helped.
I’m always inspired here. Being a new gardener that “skip of my heart” feeling when we see a new sprout is certainly addictive. I’m hooked! Thank you. ❤️🪴🌱👒
Video request please! Imagine this, you set up the camera up on your wind chime pergola before a storm came through so we all can vicariously sit and watch the garden during a storm. Just listening to the sounds of the garden and the goats and everything else. ❤️❤️❤️ ASMR
The overwhelming joy you express with your eyes are priceless.
Stay safe and God bless you my friends. 🌱🐷🐄🐐🐓🌱 Lisa
Good Morning from snowy Anchorage Alaska! Jess, we frequently have “breakfast” for dinner and it is a favorite for the family I cook for!
I was thinking the same! We have "breakfast" for dinner, more often than in the morning!
No worries about emitting the feelings of spring springing you did wonderful relaying those feelings - your beautiful face and words relayed it perfect! 🥰🌱🌷
Yep spring gets the jump on a s just like tax season, lol.
Your overwhelming JOY came right through the screen! Thanks Jess!
I'm so excited for spring this year, I don't even know what to do with myself!!! 💚
The glory of Spring radiates through you! Thanks for the baby goat updates. I've found I'm attached and love that you keep us updated. Your strength is amazing.
I’m so glad the baby goats are doing well, and oh yes my dear we can feel your joy! It shines brightly through your love of the farm and your beautiful garden. I feel the same way, I’m always so excited when Spring arrives👩🏼🌾🌱🌿
its great to see someone as excited about spring as i am especially gardening lol
We had Nubian goats years ago, when we were young (we're in our 70's now). What Sweeties they were. Just the other day, I was driving down a friend's road, and out of the brush, came a Momma Nubian, and then behind her came two Nubian youngsters. What a joy they are, and their milk is beyond yummy! We bought land back then, and were living in a wall tent for a couple of years, while we built our cabin, here in Alaska. One of my fondness memories was milking Momma, Star. It was dark out, with just one light to see. No fences, nothing. Just me and Star, and the Big Wilderness. It was a glorious time!
🎉🎉Roots and Refuge video means happy dance!😍 As always I was so excited to see another post tysm!🎉
Miahs face at 1:20, lol!!
His expressions are such hilarious fun!😆😂
Perfect timing! Ya know hearing ur story about mia and his rice pudding just warms my heart! I've had a garden in one form or another for a few years now but last year it was so prolific with lettuces that I was making salads and bringing them to gatherings and I was just so overjoyed to have grown something that was so delicious and plentiful and brought so many smiles, well wishes and positivity to friends and family and although I dont know what the future holds I can only wish and dream that one day I'll look down at a meal and be taken back by the fact that I grew in one form or another everything on my plate. 🥰
You look so legitimately happy to be in your garden.
Expecting snow tonight and tomorrow, but the crocuses popped over the weekend and I got a snow pea tower created and the cold tolerant seeds down, here's hoping.
I am happy because you are happy. Thank you for sharing your joy with us.
Awesome story about Miah & the milk!!! It's perfect like gathering eggs for breakfast
You just happen to have amazing children too! You ask them to come help you with something and no complaining or attitude, just a "yeah sure." I love it!
I'm so excited for spring too! I'm in zone 5a, so my last frost date isn't until the end of May, but we're almost finished building a geothermal heated greenhouse on our farm, and spring has come inside there! It's so wonderful seeing all the green popping up and the little plants getting bigger!
I know the feeling! They're finally logging my property, and being hopeful, I've started my seeds in my tiny shed to house. This week is suppose to be rainy and windy, so I took the potted fruit trees, and the starts that came up and put them on the porch and enclosed it with heavy plastic. I'm bound and determined to have my plants make it this year and to have a decent first year garden at the place I've chosen to be planted at!
In Texas, I planted a lot of seeds months ago (kale, broccoli, etc) and the dogs and squirrels/rabbits got in the bed. I gave up and last week I saw seedlings popping up everywhere. Even though we think we know when to plant seeds...they know when the timing is right. Kind of neat. I think I'm going to start putting out seeds in the Winter and just see when they sprout. :)
The spring on the farm reminds me of Gods gracious forgiveness. A new start and new life 💗
Jess and Family thank you all for looking out for those lovely baby goats 😍😍 they are amazing 💕🤩
You ARE sharing the joy and I sure do appreciate it Jess. It helps to motivate me to get started because I enjoy my little garden too! I'm going back and forth about what to plant. I bought so many seeds last year! Vegetable, Herbs, and Flower seeds galore! I know that I'll end up planting more than I can handle because I'm new and have alot to learn about gardening BUT I LOVE it!
Are you *kidding* me?
Sorry I couldn't help myself. 😆
I share that overwhelming joy; I'm in zone 7 in Greenville SC and even though I don't have livestock my backyard garden and raised beds are full of returning life and the seedlings I started under lights are gradually getting acclimated to outdoors. It's good to hear you put this into words because I am suburban gardener, most people don't understand that overwhelming joy of being connected to the cycle of nature. Our frost date is April 4 and my spirit feels like a seedling pushing through the dirt!
You're glowing in your garden, Jess! Life is good😘😊
This was the perfect timing! I was just sitting down planning my garden, with your book right by me. Starting seeds soon! I'm in NY and we're still getting snow. Can't wait for more sun! We are feeling spring fever for sure! Thanks for all the inspiration you bring!
Awesome video! I share your excitement here in Arkansas. 🥰🥰
I have been spending so much time outside staring at my empty garden space, just dreaming. I actually did some planting yesterday.
Starting a memorial garden for a friend I lost a few weeks back.🤗
Just a week ago we had snow up to our boots, from then to now the snow is gone the daffodils are poking through and the tomato seeds are getting started today!
Jess, you DO share your joy with us!!! Your videos make me smile....inside and out!! I start seeds and feel the joy you have. I don't have anything more than a few containers to grow it...but it's shear joy! THANK YOU for all you and Miah do & share!!! Hugs from S.C.!!!
Seeing the daffodils blooming and all of the baby goats just makes me feel so happy because of the new life at spring time. "Boop you on the head." Made me chuckle. ... You may not be able to warm people's gardens but you sure do warm their hearts..mine included:)
I could just see you start glowing and light up when you got happy about spring starting.
So grateful for you and your family sharing your amazing home and farm with us. My Fiancé is working on the road while I stay in an RV homeschooling our daughter, everything we do is to save money for our own family farm. Sometimes I get very lost in the day to day and forget why we’re doing what we’re doing.
Then I see Jess and how much joy she brings in every video and I am reminded that it will all be worth it .
Here in the sort of frozen north (high right around freezing) I just came inside from walking around staring at my garlic and winter sown jugs, and poking at the earth making sure it is still frozen (it is) and just rejoicing in the sunshine! ALL thanks to you Jess, because you saved my soul last year.
I’m so feeling your joy I know exactly how you feel. Thank you
I'm so thankful you show the good the bad and the ugly! It makes me as a beginner appreciate patience and perseverance! Thank you miah and yalls beautiful family!
I sure will miss seeing the original Roots and Refuge garden but I am beyond thrilled to see what you and your family have in store at the new Roots and Refuge Farm!
I am just like you... I live in a colder climate, to my greatest despair, and last saturday I decided I was going to plant the onion starts I brought from Portugal (much warmer climate fyi) so as I was happily planting away, hail starts falling yet my determined and joyous little heart didn't allow me to stop. Lol I hope they survive!
Oh Jess, you do share that joy with us. It is tangible in this video ❤️🌱
Oh I hear ya, I am aching for my garden right now.... I actually went out and shoveled snow off of some of my beds the other day 😂 but you are right it always returns and when it does it’s full bore business.... trying to tell myself to enjoy the next few weeks of calm before the storm, the storm of springtime 🌱🌱🍄🌷FYI really loving yours and Jill s podcast ❤️ maybe that should become a thing ?!?!!! 😉
Poor little Max And Mercy must learn to be goats. Baby goats are adorable! ❤
I LOVE it, too!!! We’re a month behind you. I just seeded celery in little pots Saturday. Yay!!! 😃
I so love watching your videos. It's great that you share your farm and family experiences with us. I don't have anything near what you've got, land-wise but I love getting my hands dirty. Your enthusiasm and candor is refreshing. Thanks for sharing your world!
💖 Eeek, your enthusiasm for spring has me feeling a little giddy and we're expecting snow again "in the frigid north"... Love your videos and your sweet spirit!
Good morning! I love catching up with you while I have my morning coffee! When I woke up this morning (in Ontario Canada) it was -12c (10.4f) so I’m one of those people in the frozen north. My garden is still half covered in snow, but your enthusiasm is contagious, and I’m VERY excited about the coming growing season.
Same here I northern BC. -14°C this morning after a week of gorgeous weather. One more stab at winter. Thankfully at the mo.ent not a lot of snow on the ground but you never know
SW Ontario here. Loved that wonderful false spring last week!! (or was it the week before??? keeping track of time was bad enough before covid brain!)
You are such a sweet heart!! You are showing us and letting us see how you love your garden 💕💕!! You make me smile!! Thank you for warming my heart!! 🙏🙏💕💕.
Even if it’s just one thing on my plate that came from my land, I’m super pleased. A plate of home grow food-much pleasure and thanksgiving to God.
You very much convey all the excitement and joy you feel. I'm doubling the size of my garden this year and I'm past ready with wanting to start. My husband just smiles and says "let's give it another week, ok?' when I start going through the seeds. 😀
Best thing on a cold rainy morning to get up and watch a few minutes of your vlog :)
I'm loving watching this video in my cozy chair and hot cup of coffee ☕
Just ordered your new book!! Can’t wait!! Your videos are so informative I’m sure the book will have everything I need to grow a wonderful garden this year!!!
I started my seeds and I am so excited. I love the start of the spring. It's like being born again every year. I have cows, they seem to know too. The chickens are laying again..... It's heaven.
I love your hair band. I have the same one !!🌻🌻🌻😍😍 live your passion for life sweetie keep plugging along for the love of life and your family! Thank you such for all you share with us all.
One more season in this garden! Sad and happy at the same time
Got your book in the mail last week and am LOVING it! I want a veggie garden so bad I’m starting with a bucket salsa garden and it’s so inspiring! For your next book, yes I said it, NEXT book, you should totally do a gardeners devotional. I would love to pray and find my way to peace through the garden. You are so grounded to God through the earth. You inspire me in that way too. Many Blessings to you from The Cobblestone Cottage! 🌷🏡
I totally understand about spring sneaking up. After the thaw from the ice and cold... there it was! 😁👍
It is such a joy to see someone so happy about what you are doing. I do enjoy watching your videos. thank you
Your joy is so contagious! I always feel like we would be great friends if we knew each other IRL. I was feeling so overrun by things to do in the garden today (and we are in Michigan). Your joy has lifted my spirits. I'm a so grateful for your channel. Thank you!
Oh Miah - you’re not alone! My husband has been known to go out and milk the goats directly into his cup of coffee in the morning if there’s nothing in the fridge 😂
So glad the babies are doing well. Hahaha your store is in your yard. That was awesome that Miah just went and milked the goat for his rice pudding. I can't believe it's already mid March. I just harvested 3 buckets of greens because my mustard and turnips I planted in the fall had started to bolt. It will not be long before I am harvesting English Peas to shell because I sowed them inside and transplanted them when the weather started to warm up a week or two ago.
My quail aren't laying yet but I anticipate them laying soon. I love breakfast foods but I don't love to eat them in the mornings. I am rarely hungry first thing.
So excited to see your garden this year
I love watching you get so excited about the change in season. I'm so looking forward to planting soon!
Yes , is absolutely a blessing to have a farm that you can get your food from☺️🤗
good morning
Hi Kids! Just a quick shout out to tell you I so do enjoy watching you and your family. You are an inspiration to me at my age! You so touch my heart with what you do. Bless you.
I love your obvious joy and gratitude when talking about your wonderful life. You have worked hard to get here what a journey. If I was in your shoes I wouldn't get over the producing your own breakfast thing.
So happy for you
I don't have a garden but our little baby oak tree got his new leaves this week and we are so proud 😂
Jess, you do share that joy with us. You exude joy and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels it. No need to bop me on the head. 😉❤️
Glad to see the lil goats doing so well !
