I sew with the gathered side on top so I can see that the gathers are even and not bunched-up in a weird way. Also, mark the center of your gather piece and line it up with the center of the piece you are sewing the gathered piece to. This will also help to make sure the gathers spaced evenly. Also, you can purchase a attachment for your sewing machine that will gather your fabric as you sew. This attachment is great for projects that are big. It's a challenge to gather a long piece of fabric!

I am an enthusiastic wannabe sew'er (if that's even a word), I'm useless at hand sewing and machine scares the life out of me, it sits the other side of my craft room daring me to try using her, which I have ......... but with not much success, sewing is just something I'm useless at .......... but your tutorial made everything so simple, I wasn't asking 'Why?' at the end of everything you did, which I normally do with other tutorials - the camera work was also super great because everything was so clear and we can see exactly what you're doing.............You really make teaching/learning fun and simplistic and at a great speed instead of zooming through everything, loved it - you've a totally wonderful approachable personality - just brilliant - thank goodness I found you, subscribed and going to watch more videos ,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,. Dana, thank you for your tutorial. Been sewing for a long time, and I have always used two threads for gathering, but this technique of using 3 threads hits it out of the ballpark! I can readily see how the 3 threads really work to more evenly gather and stabilize the gathering. As I avoid sewing over pins to keep my computerized sewing machine's timing in good order, the only thing I would do differently is to either machine or hand baste the gathered skirt to the waistband before permanently machine sewing it. Very nice skirt pattern! Congrats and best wishes for all you share with us!

I learned to gather with just two rows only, but your method of making three is interesting and helpful. What I have always done with the loose threads, after they are gathered and while sewing is to put a pin at the very ends of the gathers. Then wind the loose gather threads around the pin several times. That seems to secure it. I can only imagine I learned this 50 years ago in Home Ec sewing class, I'm sure I did not come up with it.
