Just wanted to suggest a video for viewers to watch. It is on Roxanne Richardson’s Casual Friday episode. It is an interview with 2 tech editors and I think should be a required viewing for all knitters. I think it sometimes helps to understand some of the issues that designers have to deal with instead of slamming them because they’re not always as size inclusive as we would like. Tech editing is very expensive and adding sizes can be a major expense. Also I think it helps to think about where the designers are from, most European designers design primarily for a European clientele. Average size of a country’s population does also have a bearing. One thing the video made me appreciate is why some patterns are more expensive, it’s one thing to design a hat or sock pattern that usually only have maybe 3 sizes and another thing to design a complicated sweater pattern that we may expect to have 10 or 12 different sizes. It just gave me a broader appreciation for some of my favourite designers.
Great convo on size inclusivity. It’s totally personal in my opinion if you choose not to support certain businesses, designers etc. for whatever the reason may be. Materials, prices, sizes etc If a business and designer chooses not to offer what you are looking for whatever the reason may be to bad they don’t get ur business their loss. But I feel it’s kinda hard to expect them to be to your liking. I see this a lot with the “cancel culture” someone says does something that someone didn’t like and ppl just go all at it to cancel them. Good example was what was happening with Stephen West and it was not something intentional. My thing you don’t like someone’s product/ design don’t support them you don’t need to try to take them down. I know you ladies are not mentioning anyone not saying that’s what ur doing. Just saying don’t support them and let it be that if they don’t get with the program ❤
Thank you for addressing the size issue. I’m a big woman. I have health issues (Osteoarthritis and Lymphedema) that have limited my mobility on top of a thyroid issue. These things have worked together and I’ve gained much more weight than I ever thought possible. I’ve spent the last few months trying to find a suitable dress for my son’s wedding next month. I finally settled on a dress I don’t love because it was the only modest dress I could find. Now I am knitting the wedding shawl by Dana Young so I can dress up my plain dress. I even hit the Bling Bar and am holding Alpaca/silk with Stellaris to add a little sparkle and dress things up a bit. Large women want to look beautiful too. I wish this size issue would move into all realms of fashion. It’s hard to even shop for clothes. I am just starting my sweater journey. I plan to make a Ranunculas for myself as a Christmas sweater. I’m looking forward to wearing something beautiful to church for Christmas. I agree that it is 2023 and this should’ve progressed further. I feel like it goes back to fat shaming. Which is the one kind of “prejudice” that no one talks about and is still acceptable. I’m almost in tears typing this. But thank you for shedding a light on this issue. I love watching you girls. I learn so much from when you talk about sweater construction and swatches. It’s like taking a master class. Thank you for sharing your talents and for advocating for people who feel forgotten. ❤
Our indigenous sisters would refer to this as ‘Tiddas’. Sisters. We have a big referendum vote this weekend to vote to include our First Nations people in our constitution but also to ask for their ‘voice’ with advice to our parliaments about their decisions made on their behalf. Based on the Uluru statement from the heart. Please send good vibes for this referendum to pass in a positive way for our First Nations people moving forward 😊

Talking about parents using tech. My mum after ever text she sends me puts “love mum” at the end like she is ending a letter. It is the cutest thing.
Unfortunately discriminating against weight is the only thing that is still accepted. As a plus size lady I knit shawls because size doesn't matter. BTW I love you both. My sister and I are both knitters and our interaction reminds me of you two. Also as a breast cancer survivor I cannot thank you enough for your efforts. The high school that I just retired from has a knitting and crocheting club. We try to have yarn, needles and hooks for those kids that cannot afford them. One last thing, I am working on that new Melanie Berg mosaic shawl. It is a great pattern.

You girls do such a great job of highlighting independent makers and yarn and that is one of the things I love most about your podcast. Just highlighting the talents of some well deserving folks can make such a difference to some companies who struggle to get some attention. Having said all that, I hope you will feature Junction Fiber Mill and their yarn on one of your podcast. Two women (one millennial and one baby boomer) who were gutsy enough to buy a fiber mill in Vermont. They both raise sheep, process yarn in the mill, dye the yarn, and of course sell the yarn. Please check out the Making Tracks yarn which is a Spincycle looking yarn that is nonsuperwash and the colors are so beautiful in a DK wt. The story of these ladies adventure is so interesting. And did I mention they have a weekly podcast about their making, processing yarn from small sheep farms, and the adventure of two women learning how to run a mill. Great story. We need to support them.

I love this chat about size inclusivity! As indie designers are charged up to £60 per size increase, either way, it could be that sometimes they can't afford the tech editing to go that large. However, I still think you are 100% correct. The more sizes each way the better!!
Hello! I am a VERY beginner knitter and found you!! I have been watching many of the older episodes and really enjoy them all. This one was exceptional. The conversation about size inclusivity really hit home. I know that you have spoken about it in the past, but I really HEARD the message about voting with my dollars to support those designers that are going the extra mile. In high school, someone told me they liked my shirt as I walked by them in the hallway. That changed my entire day and I still think about it. Ever since then, I make it a point to tell people whenever I like their shirt, pants, makeup, whatever. Now it's basically just second nature to see something I like and say, "oh, I like that." Even if it's mid conversation and we just brush right past it. Idk, I think it's important.

Thank you for all of this. I just ran across this episode and your podcast for the first time and I am in love. Thank you for highlighting size inclusive designers!!! I have just fallen in love with Melanie Berg’s line of patterns because of you. And thank you for calling out designers who try to get away with only using ease to say their patterns fit so many. As someone who fluctuates between a 1x and 3x depending on how much ease/shaping that a piece of clothing has, I cannot imagine buying garment quantities of yarn just to have something barely fit. I can’t wait to dive into your past episodes! I do have one question, and I’ll go looking to see if you have answered it, but I see plenty of tips on how to get stitch gauge, but do you have any tips for how to adjust to get row gauge when you already have stitch gauge?

I typically save your podcasts for my Sunday morning. I watch the sun come up over our mountain then sit down to watch The GG with my coffee in my favorite mug! Thank you guys for what you do!
I do appreciate your discussion on size inclusivity...BUT...I feel that you can't be so harsh on designers without addressing what many people are willing to compensate for this work. I hear you speak about the price of patterns.."wow, it is only 5 dollars". Well, I think you should plant the seed that if we are going to expect designers to do more work with their patterns then we should expect and be willing to pay more. For the most part pattern writing is "womens work" and we need to start adequately compensating this craft. Most knitters share patterns without ever thinking that they are cutting the designer out of that revenue. And now we expect them to write for 5 or more sizes. And to be transparent I am NOT a designer and I AM plus size.
Agree with you completely. Tracey is plus size and knits lots of patterns. How big do designers need to cater for?
I am a plus size knitter, I knit for the joy of knitting, I buy a pattern because I can figure out how to make it fit…I already have to spend a considerable amount more than the smaller sized people on yarn, let alone the amount of time it takes me to make it. I believe Tracie’s comment about the cost of the pattern being only $5 was out of surprise that it was so inexpensive, by comparison to what we are accustomed to paying, (whether or not the knitter is plus size). I doubt that “most knitters” share patterns. I believe that most knitters buy a lot more patterns than they actually knit. This is my experience with all of my knitting friends. None of my knitter buds would dare ask someone to give them a copy of a pattern. This difference of views could be due to our different experiences, but I like to think of knitters as community builders and small business supporters. I think I missed the meaning behind the “woman’s work” comment. The designer of the $5 pattern is male. So I’m not sure how the “woman’s work” comment fits. It is a big deal, because the limited sizes are only hurting the designer, by losing larger than their maximum size knitters. I just appreciate knowing that the patterns they show are worth my time in looking them up.
Ladies, you the best! I love your videos and all the knitting/non-knitting chats. I want to thank you to raising awareness of size inclusivity. I have personally been able to knit without too much adjustment. However, everyone should be able to do that too. My extra point is this: even for those that have larger sizes, the designer should take care with the grading. A woman with a full bust doesn’t automatically have very large arms! Thanks for all your wisdom and fun.
Size inclusivity is a must! Good for you guys to bring the subject up. If we spout off about how great the global knitting community is ( and it is) then we must include ALL knitters of all sizes in our wonderful community. This means the ability to pick the pattern you want to make and know it will include your size.
Don't leave the bottom leaves off! Just split for sleeves right after the big flower and continue the colorwork after!
I would like to add to the size inclusivity topic that patterns that say “one size” are not made for large people. I don’t care if it’s a poncho or a long rectangular wrap, Larger people need things longer to wrap around them, or wider to accommodate their girth, so even if something doesn’t have a bust size measurement, like a poncho, a larger size person needs it wider and longer so “one size” doesn’t cut it. Thanks for talking about this!

Thank you ladies, for advocating for size inclusivity. Though I do not have issues with finding patterns my size (I’m usually in the middle size), I like to see when patterns are considering all sizes. I am much more willing to purchase them. I do have friends and family who I might want to knit for and or make items for donations.
I appreciate the conversation around size inclusivity. In early 2021 I developed a chronic illness that is still undiagnosed. I went from someone who was active my whole life to someone who could barely load the dishwasher almost overnight. Through PT my symptoms are improving, but I still can't even vacuum, let alone do what I used to. In that time, I've gone from an XL to a 3X and it sucks to see how differently I'm treated. I've been fat most of my adulthood, but the difference in treatment between a little fat and a lot fat is huge.
Over the past few months I've started knitting (mainly because I couldn't find a crochet sweater I liked enough to make). And to go to a pattern I want to make and not be able to make it because it's not designed for my body, that sucks. A lot. So thank you for talking about this.
And I didn't even touch on the fact that a lot of plus size people start making their own clothes because they cannot find clothes that fit their body and style in stores. So to also be excluded from the maker community after being excluded from mainstream fashion, that's not cool.
Yeah so glad you got the opportunity to share some of our Aussie yarn 👏🏻👏🏻 I have made a Sosu knit shawl out of 3 colours of the 4ply Fiori prestige yarns…..they are amazingly soft & squishy ❤
On the size exclusivity question : Helen of the Crafty Toad podcast has also hit a problem with the length of a sweater for a larger taller woman. So even though the sweater pattern is wide enough because of the striping sections, it's not long enough. The pattern includes a variety of sizes but made for just one length for all sizes and this can't possibly work. So the point being, if you're looking for a size inclusive pattern, check out the schematic for length too as well as chest measurements.

Our power has gone out in our bedroom, master bath, and my den, and we can't get an electrician in for 10 days!! My husband ran a long extension cord for me to be able to use my computer, but I'm not happy. On a positive, it is finally fall here in northern CA, and I am loving sweaters. Thank you for sticking up for us, big girls. I have a 54 in chest but smaller body, and I have to pass by so many cute sweaters and tee's. 😢 It makes me not want to knit because I am not experienced enough to modify them.

Thank you Jodi for bringing this issue forward, I am, usually 1X and need extra length in the body & arms. You need to read each pattern very carefully & try & figure our your gauge & yarn. I need to do knittimg math for everything I knit myself, God help the new knitter that doesn't understand their knitting gauge! I knit a lot of socks, hats, mitts etc. Tracy I just love your knittimg pattern Hope & Sundhine Socks that you gifted to me. Keep up the great job you two! 👍
One of the first cardigans I designed , I messed up the raglan increases and it became a dolman sleeve and to this day it's the most worn item in my closet. I vote continue the pattern as it.
First off ,I love you ladies!! I don't even knit,right now. I am trying to learn. I love too many things like crochet and cross stitch but also knitting. I just find it to be a little difficult lol. Anyway on the subject of niceness...I always try to be kind when I am dealing with people.I was raised that way. To respect my elders !and just be polite in general. I have to say that when someone isn't that way in return it takes my breath away because of the way I grew up. I wanted to say that I find sometimes people do not like me because I'm to nice. The word fika is pronounced “fee-kuh”, and it's used as both a verb and a noun. In English, fika means "to have coffee" or “a coffee break”, but it's about so much more than that. Fika in Sweden is when you sit with your family, friends or colleagues, and take a coffee or tea, often with something sweet on the side
So glad to have caught the tail end of your LIVE today. I could not figure out why the video jumped all the way to the end, and then realized it was "in the real".
I knit gauge swatches and at this stage of my knitting, I just know I can't meet some requirements. Specifically, in colorwork my knitting is closer to "square", so whenever a designer calls for a row gauge significantly tighter than the stitch gauge, I know I can't do it. Perhaps in the future, who knows, but if I want the sweater now, I modify it and split for sleeves earlier and yes, in some cases it feels like redesigning the whole thing.
Jodi!! As a fat knitter, I am so grateful for your burn it down mentality to designers who refuse to be size inclusive. I am right here with you, ready to trash. And yes, these designers are telling me that my body does not deserve to wear their garments. Size inclusivity is more difficult than I would have imagined. Listening to the sweet Andrea Mowery talk about how to size is so interesting and involved. Andrea does do size inclusion.
For the Autumn sweater why don’t you put the leaves around cuffs of the sleeve and maybe the bottom cuff. Love it

Thank you for championing size inclusiveness in knitting and crochet patterns. As a curvy girl myself I would say that it goes beyond disappointing, and it is very hurtful and makes you feel as if something is wrong with you. You get excited when you see a lovely pattern and then realize you can't be part of the community and knit it.

I imagine grading knit designs is a lot of hard work. So the cost of the pattern would need to reflect this. Which isn’t fair to the knitters that fall into the existing sizes. But I definitely see your especially with the negative ease sweaters. Perhaps the larger sizes could be sold separately as either two separate patterns or with an addendum to the existing pattern with the larger sizes at an extra cost. The designer could also see how many patterns in the larger sizes sell for future planning.
Oh. My. Gosh. I am currently frogging a 95% completed Easy V sweater for the exact same yoke depth issue!!! I went a little rogue with gauge as well, and kept thinking the crazy deep yoke fit would sort itself out. I just kept knitting. Every time I tried it on though, it just looked no good. But I kept knitting depsite knowing it was no good, until I was on the colorwork for the second sleeve and finally decided to face up to reality. It was so wonky on me and I was never going to wear it. In 13 years of knitting I have never frogged a basically complete sweater and this is emotional!!! But I want to at least save the yarn. I thought if maybe trying to find someone to gift it to, but decided to just claim defeat. Take it from me, make your choices sooner rather than later! It is lovely though :)
Traci…you have to add a tassel to your bandana cowl! I would even knit one with the solid stripes at the neck and Jodi’s stitch pattern on the lower part.
I say continue on. Stop the pattern when you’ve gotten all the increases done. Then it’s your sweater and good for you. Wallow in it. It is a stunning sweater. And you’re a stunning woman! 😊

I commend your stance regarding size inclusive patterns. However, I wonder how fair the argument is. Do we expect all apparel to be offered in every size? I often think about shoes in this context. I have a wide foot and not every shoe style is available for my foot. Should I criticise the shoe designer who does not design for wide feet? Perhaps I should. What do you think? Is this a fair comparison to knitting patterns?

Size inclusivity is an important issue. When Grocery Girls design a sweater, what size range from and up to will they include? Would be interested to know what GG consider are the lowest and highest sizes that are inclusive.
They have no sweater designs.
On the Autumn Bloom and the too big yoke, I wonder if you can modify and get the chart to continue into the sleeves. I just did Winter Woods by Jessica McDonald and that yoke is a long chart where you split for the sleeves and continue the chart. I know it would not be what the original intended, but it might salvage it for you.
So you have made the point so it is in the designers court now. Let it go .It all comes down to money - people who need larger sizes will not buy their patterns.

50:51 autumn bloom : I made this mistake with my first ever sweater which was enchanted mesa from Stephen west where I just swapped out thinking it would just be slightly larger and comfy and it is a dress. A Dress. That I love to death and wear with leggings however not entirely what I intended 😂

Thank you for pointing out that size inclusivity goes both ways. When I have to knit a sweater for a petite woman with a 30in bust, many patterns don't include that size. The Field sweater is a good example: with the the smallest size the sweater would have a 7in ease which is more than what seems to be intended based on the pictures on Ravelry. I have to shop my patterns in the kids section...
When we say that a pattern is size inclusive, what sizes should be included ?
Jody - You should really consider getting an implant. I know it's expensive but it's always there so you never have to worry! Also, it will help prevent the muscles in your face from sagging where the tooth is missing. Worth it!!

Tracie, for your sweater, you could stop before making all of the increases and add more stitches at the underarm. You could add maybe 4 to 6 stitches on each side. That could shave off a little of the length.
