- đ„ The RED Komodo 6K: Most Frustrating Camera of 2024 (But Iâd Buy It Again!)
In this video, I delve into the complexities of using the RED Komodo 6K. While this camera is undeniably one of the most challenging to work with in 2024, it's also an essential part of my filmmaking toolkit. Join me as I explore the pros and cons of this powerful yet frustrating piece of equipment.
đ What You'll Discover:
1. Major Drawbacks:
Audio Challenges: The RED Komodo 6K lacks professional audio inputs and has poor pre-amps, making sound capture a significant hurdle. I'll share my experience and solutions using external mics.
Slow Boot-Up Time: This camera is not designed for quick, spontaneous shots. Learn why keeping the camera rolling is often necessary to avoid missing crucial moments.
Tedious SDI Protocol: Switching batteries or turning off the camera requires disconnecting all cables. Iâll recount my experience with this during a wildlife shoot.
Expensive Storage: The cost of media cards for the Komodo 6K is high, and shooting in 4K crops the sensor, leading to increased noise.
Lack of IBIS: Without in-body stabilization, achieving smooth shots can be difficult. Iâll discuss how using Canon RF lenses with stabilization helps.
Outdated Media Solutions: Relying on CFast cards means always carrying a card reader, and forgetting it can halt your shoot.
2. Reasons to Love It:
Incredible Image Quality: Despite its flaws, the RED Komodo 6K delivers stunning visuals that make it worth the hassle.
Compact and Portable: Ideal for travel, this camera allows for a minimal, lightweight setup.
Global Shutter: Perfect for handheld shooting, reducing the rolling shutter effect.
Professional Perception: Using a RED camera impresses clients, setting you apart from those using mirrorless cameras.
Ease of Exposure: The Komodo 6K makes it straightforward to get the perfect exposure.
Skill Development: This camera has pushed me to improve my manual focusing, planning, and overall filmmaking skills, transitioning from social media content to professional cinematography.
Discover why, despite the frustrations, the RED Komodo 6K remains an indispensable tool in my filmmaking journey.

Thanks for watching and let's continue to explore the best (and most challenging) tools in filmmaking together!
MKE 600 could be powered by a simple AA battery - just twist/unscrew the mic)
Tried that one as well, that was the reason I picked it up but the Komodo doesnât have any good preamps so you will get a very weak audio signal with a lot of noise đ
Which camera was used to record this? I have bmcc6k and considering to switch to red
The Talking Head is recorded with the Canon C70 and all the Clips you saw were all shot with the RED Komodo 6Kđ€
I think IBIS would just be problematic for the type of camera the Komodo is. Really meant for fast paced stuff. The nature of IBIS is the sensor is never fully locked down. Can be problematic for a camera designed for movement.
I also think Prores 422 4k is a great option to reduce file sizes, even Prores LT. Yeah it's not quite as nice as REDraw but you still get the red color science and it can look great.
100% agree with you! But they could think about incorporating a IBIS that locks itself when you turn it of like in the Nikon Z6III that would be the best of both worldsđ€
Being a crash cam - in essence quite a small, lightweight box - the Komodo can do drone footage - if matched with one of the âcinelifterâ drones that have become available in the past 3 years and not particularly expensive either. Of course, thereâs the alternative of using one of the BlackMagic PCCs or the ZCam on such a âcinelifterâ. Twenty years ago - to capture really high quality cinematic drone footage - would have been prohibitively expensive for most content creators !
100%! itâs crazy whatâs possible with nowadays technology!
Nice overview. Considering Komodo was designed to be a crash cam, I never had expectations there would be Mini XLR or phantom power. I think we were blessed to have Red release a high quality camera that was within our budgetary reach, even if it was originally set out to be a crash cam. It helped grow the Red community and for the first time way more film makers could afford Red. Komodo X is what I would consider a proper release intended for use as an A cam. I agree with all your positive points đ
Couldnât agree more with what you are saying!
If you need a camera for documentaries, or interviews, they are much better options! And btw you can you use a Rode Videomic NTG, I use it on my FX6 and it's great for the price ;-)
Definitely not the most convenient choice for docs but I learnt to love it. And yes the Rode Mics are definitely working great on the RED. Thanks for the recommendation :)
Just get the Beachtek DXA-RED Compact Low Noise Preamplifier for RED - the problem is always the user or the project type.
Couldnât agree more. In the end the camera is just a tool!
I think you should still be able to use your MKE 600 using the 3.5mm.
Not the same quality
@@AdamInside why not? please explain.
The problem is that the Mic need good Pre Amps and Phantom power, which the RED Komodo 6k doesnât provide without adding an extra accessory!
