Monrovia, Liberia: lobster on the beach anyone?

  • This West African capital city has the title of being one of the wettest you’ll ever visit with annual rainfall often exceeding a whopping 5000mm per year. But of course the lobsters don’t mind the rain. They are a Monrovian speciality & are served on the beach here & along with bustling markets & the Du river, a visit to this former colony of the American Colonization Society is a fascinating experience.
Also featuring in this video are the sights but more notably sounds of a bunch of growing & young Liberian musical talent in the form of a local brass band conducted & directed by my colleague & pilot James Trott who for over a decade now has used music and in particular brass instruments as a way to educate youngsters here. The teachings also go some way in equipping these kids with vital life skills. You can find out much much more about Brass For Africa here:

I worked in Liberia in the 70s. Monrovia had all the amenities one could find in America. Anyone from America to Liberia during that time did not need to change their appliance voltage. Voltage was 110 at that time. Currency was strictly the U.S dollar. Unemployment was relatively low in proportion to the small population and many foreign enterprises that operated in Liberia. Influx of other African workers flocked to find good paying (US $) jobs in Liberia.
The capital, Monrovia at that time looked no different from a small Southern city in America. Street lights, street signs, lights, running water and street sweepers came out early in the morning in Monrovia. Many American companies operated in Liberia. I worked for one called LAMCO. ... a joint venture company.
Obviously, 14 years of war destroyed that beautiful country and left Monrovia overpopulated with displaced people.
Liberia at that time had one of the strongest economy in Africa. I pay, that Liberia regains its economic and political prominence in Africa.

You guys have to be very accurate when you say or report things about Liberia because living in Liberia is expensive almost like American or even worst because of the lack of jobs
