    I am going through some of my more popular videos that I will be doing updates in in a couple of weeks and looking back a year ago I began thinking I needed to increase our food storage back up to a full years supply. I am noticing that many were feeling that same urgency. Who would have thought we would be where we are this year! 2020 has certainly been a long year with many changes, and I see such a need to teach preserving our own food now more than ever. I will be doing a series on What to Can, Dehydrate and freeze as well as recipes on how to use what you are storing. Please Subscribe and get alerted when I put these videos up soon. We need to use our skills to help not only our families but, if we can afford, help others we know in need with a quick and easy meal. I hope you all join me in learning more in this new Normal. Canning was nearly a Lost art, and now, Millions of families are growing gardens and Preserving their harvest, Canning meats, making seasonings, etc. I started Canning so I knew what is in the food I store for my family.
    Thank you SO much for watching ❤️ Subscribe for FREE to my channel to learn more and be eligible for the 5500 Subs Giveaway! 🤗❤️🏝️

    After dehydrating the first time, I was hooked and now have four 9 tray dehydrators and can take advantage of sales on fruit and vegetables. Ya, I'm totally hooked!!! Love dehydrating. I use my dehydrated fruit and veggies a lot. Just did jars of dehydrated potato slices that will be used for scalloped potatoes and fried potatoes..

    I have just bought a dehydrator and this is just the video I needed! I grow a lot of my own fruit and veg and forage a lot in the summer too. I normally freeze or make jams/chutneys with my produce to store it - but I wanted to learn to dry it out. I am trying to make fruit tea blends, fruit leather and crunchy lunchbox snacks. I would never have thought of dehydrating mushrooms, cabbage, corn or herbs. Thank you for sharing this xx

      Yes! As soon as I get some time to get jars out and put some recipes together!
      Dehydrating is a Wonderful way to preserve fruits, veggies and Jerky. Takes up less room if you use Foodsaver bags or Mylar,and is fantastic for throwing a quick meal together when backpacking or camping. You can rehydrate veggies to use in Casseroles,Soups, blend in smoothies, make veggie powders to enhance flavors when cooking, create your own seasonings and preserve excess garden harvests! SO much you can do with dehydrated foods! 🤗❤️

      @@yibuseato it isn't just about soup & dried fruit.
      We dehydrate peppers, onions, chives, basil, cilantro , garlic, onion and tomatoes.
      We can always rehydrate for tacos, homemade manwich, very inexpensive herbs & spices, pasta salad, casserole, jerky and many dehydrated foods can be ground in a coffee grinder (not the same one used for coffee) for compact storage.

      Yes! I will mention this in my video Today! But, All sealed Dehydrated foods using the Foodsaver attachments OR Oxygen absorbant stored in a cool, dry place with no light should be good for several years. Example: I have several jars of dried onions, White, Yellow ,Red and Sweet. I dry them in about 1 inch chunks. I use these in soups, stews and stir fries. In addition, I also grind the onions as I need them into powder! I have a Blendtec blender, but a coffee grinder or food processor will work just as well.

      I vacuum seal my jars of food ai store for longterm. I don't vacuum seal foods I use often. You can use an O2 Absorber in your Mason jars if storing longterm.
      Once you open the jar, the O2 Absorber stops working, so I don't use them in my working pantry. I do a lot of dehydrating, but I also store a lot of freeze dried foods that don't dehydrate well or that have a better texture when Freeze dried. • @DianeTheCanningNana
      @DianeTheCanningNana  Před 2 lety +1

      Welcome to my Channel 💜
      If you are storing short term with an oxygen absorber in the plastic container then yes. But, plastic is porous, so it isn't good for long term ( longer that 2 months) If you cannot store in glass jars that seal well, use a Mylar bag inside the plastic container with an O2 Absorber.
      I use a lot of the 1/2 gallon Mason jars for my dehydrated foods and when I open my Thrive Life Freeze Dried foods, I store them in glass jars as well to keep longer. ( I live at the beach so Lots of humidity!)

      If I long term store Pint or quart or larger jars I use my Food saver to Vacuum seal. For things I use Very often I do not vacuum seal.
      I do Foodsave some Dehydrated goods, and beans and rice, again for longer term. I have oxygen absorbers on hand always. Those are more for much larger storage in mylar bags with buckets. All depends on the food, and if I have so much that I won't use it up for several months ( like the cabbage and Onions I'll be doing!).❤️🤗

      You can vacuum seal dehydrated food in Foodsaver bags or Mason Jars. Shelf life depends on food dehydrated and how you store it. Herbs and vegetables store well for years, fruits and leathers months if vacuum sealed , oxygen absorbers help extend all foods.

    How do you afford all those jars to can the dehydrated stuff? Jars are insanely expensive these days unless you luck out and find them at yard sales or Goodwill, and I haven’t been able to in ages. It’s almost cheaper to buy dehydrated stuff.

    • @DianeTheCanningNana
      @DianeTheCanningNana  Před 5 lety +2

      I buy them only when they are on sale at stores like WinCo, Walmart and Target, also some home center stores. I have been blessed to be given many jars from people I teach at home , and yard sales and thrift stores. I have over 1000+ jars, half are usually filled!. Right now I am trying to increase my food storage back up! Lots of basic food videos coming up!
      Of course, it's an investment. Once you have the jars you reuse them over and over again. Always buy NEW Seals, and replace rings as needed. ❤️🏝️

      @@tarabooartarmy3654 Think of them as a long term investment. I have canning jars that I bought over 40 years ago. It takes time to build up a good stash. And, it is especially hard, at first, because of the relating expenses involved with getting started in food preservation. Just take it at a pace that you can afford. Ask friends and members of your extended family if they, or someone they know, have unused canning jars and equipment. Aunt Sally may have stopped canning or cousin Andrew may be wondering what to do with the jars he inherited.
      Leave your name and number at local thrift stores and charity donation shops, asking them to call if they get jars or equipment. Keep an eye on Craig's List. Educate yourself on what equipment, supplies and jars cost new and what the average selling prices of used are in your area. Second hand prices often run from "good bargains" to being "better off to buy new". Knowing the market will help you zero in on what's a fair price for both you and the seller.
      Be sure to look for clearance sales as the end of summer gardening approaches. During winter months when generally less canning is done, buy a case or 2 of jars from time to time. Steadily build your stash when you have the extra cash to buy another dozen quart or pint jars. Also keep an eye out for commercially available foodstuffs in jars that can be re-used for food storage. There are a few products that come in mason jars, These jars would be used for canning. Some jars with pop-top (one piece) lids can be re-used for dehydrated food storage. There are videos on how to use these and to re-use canning jar lids for dry food storage. (Don't try to re-use single use lids for wet food canning. Risk of seal failure is to great to reuse these in waterbath or pressure canning processes.)
      In closing, taking this "long term investment" approach should yield a good return in investment within a few short years. Using all the tricks of the trade, you may be pleasantly surprised as to how quickly you can grow your jar stash.
      Hope this helps.

      Linda, traditional 1/2 gal mason (canning) jars use the same lids as pints and quarts. Regular or wide mouth. Believe the older 1/2 gal typically used the regular lid and most new ones use the wide lid. The regular and wide mouth FoodSaver attachments will seal the same style 1/2 gal jars. I have a number of 1/2 gal jar in both lid sizes and my FoodSaver vac seals them both, just fine. If you have a FoodSaver, google FoodSaver Jar Attachment.
      Hope this helps you, if you haven't already got your sealer and others who may be reading these threads.
