I talk to politicans regularly because of the work I do. Over the years I got a lot of empty promises. Meantime people are sleeping on the streets. One of these people told me about a certain politician who just looked at him and walked by. Didnt even say hello. This didn't happen in Kerry either.
If he was more filtered he's say something like the wellbeing of people alive now is more important than contingent predictions fifty and a hundred years hence. But his language is aimed at his constituents, and it clearly works. You could argue that people now before planet in to the future is shortsighted and selfish and fails to see the global picture, so to speak, and you might have a point, but the other side of selfish and shortsightedness is rarely discussed - As things currently stand switching to green technologies as in Germany means hiking up the prices exponentially and means poor people are left unable to heat their homes, it means loss of jobs because running costs are too much. These policies have meant deaths in Germany. (Expensive energy may have killed more Europeans than covid-19 last winter, The Economist, May 10th 2023), so mutatis mutandis for Kinshasa, Khartoum and Kilgarvin
